An incredibly rare Ili Pika rabbit has been photographed for the first time in 20 years
This adorable creature is called ’Ili Pika’ (Ochotona iliensis), and it’s one of the rarest, most endangered species on the planet. Conservationist Weidong Li first discovered the Ili pika in 1983, and it was only 20 years later that a distant relative of this rabbit was spotted again in China’s Tian Shan Mountains. Oddly enough, this time it was seen by none other than the very same Weidong Li.
Today, Bright Side would like to share few rare shots of this elusive Chinese animal with you. Hopefully one day we’ll see a lot more of them in the wild!
This little Ili Pika fella is the first one of his species to be photographed in 20 years
It has been nicknamed the ’magic rabbit’ because of the fact that it mostly keeps out of everyone’s sight
Only around 1,000 or so adult Ili Pika rabbits are believed to be living in the wild today, due to loss of habitat and severely fragmented populations.
This is Weidong Li — the man who originally discovered the Ili Pika species and has been studying it for many years. Well spotted, Mr. Li!
