I Refuse to Help My Sick Mother—She Needs a Harsh Reality Check

Life has a strange way of turning the tables. Just months ago, I was the one desperate for help. Now, it’s my mother, sick, heartbroken, and alone, calling me in tears, asking for a place to stay.
But I said no. Not to be cruel, but because I think it’s the right thing to do.

Hi Bright Side and readers! Here’s the backstory: Not long ago, I hit a rough patch. I was overwhelmed, financially and emotionally drained, drowning in debt. I called my mom, hoping for some kind of support, and begged for help.
Her response? She denied, saying her husband needed the money more. She didn’t even hesitate. Just like that, she made it clear: her husband came first. I was left to figure things out on my own.
The pain of that moment still sits with me. After that, I stopped calling her and cut her off. I had to protect myself from the hurt of being rejected by the one person who’s supposed to always be there—my mom.
Then the unexpected happened.

Months passed with no contact. Then one day, she called me, sobbing and crying, asking for help. She told me she was sick and lonely. My blood boiled when I heard her husband say, “Yeah, go back to the daughter who has no money, I want you out of the house.”
Apparently, her husband had found out she was having an affair and kicked her out of the house. The same man she chose over me had now turned his back on her. She was suddenly alone and sick, with nowhere to go.
She begged me for help. A place to stay. A second chance. I couldn’t believe it.
I don’t know if I can be the bigger person.
My first reaction? Shock. Then came the anger. How could she expect me to be there for her when she wasn’t there for me?
I’m torn. Deep down, part of me still wants to help. She’s my mother. She’s sick. No one deserves to suffer alone.
But the other part of me remembers the coldness in her voice when I asked for help. The way she dismissed me. That memory still stings. We’re told to always be there for our parents. But what about when they fail us?
Setting boundaries isn’t mean. It’s a way of protecting yourself from more pain. I’m not trying to be vengeful. I’m just trying to heal.
Right now, I don’t have the emotional strength to take her in. The wounds are too fresh. And the trust? It’s shattered. This whole situation has left me with more questions than answers.
Am I doing the right thing? Is this the moment to show compassion—or is it time to walk away for good? Please, share your opinions. I’m desperate for advice.

You could have helped youe mom, taught her how people don't put their husband or boyfriend ahead of their own kid. Ya, you're grown, your problems didn't concern her, but you chose to ignore her instead of making it a teaching moment
Her mother chose to ignore her first. She did choose a teaching moment. That support isn't one sided. She needed her mom probably and was ignored. What is wrong with you?
Ever heard "don't bite the hand that feeds?" Well, her mother bit the hand alright, and now she's dealing with the consequences of her choices
Why does she have to "teach" her mother anything except that karma is a witch, and if her mother hadn't learned that already, she never will. She does not have to let her mother take advantage of her and abuse her because she is the daughter. The mother is the one who laid down the "Don't bring your problems to me" gauntlet.
And to save her sainty.. think about it.. just because you are older doesn't mean you know everything..
Sometimes you have to protect your mental health. She has an soon to be ex husband to get cash from in the divorce. Not your circus, not your monkeys.
The fact that you said you were in debt, what kind of debt? If it's cc debt than that would be a you problem and expecting your mother to help you out if such debt is crazy and entitled.
I would of helped you with laundry food and gas money but you are responsible for not spending money you don't got.
Your reaction to a sick lady asking for help is probably the reason she didn't give you the money In the first place you seem to demand things and then if don't get them you turn your back. You were most likely going to turn your back her anyway, you said it yourself with your own words
Shame on you...
She didn't say she asked her mother for money, but the mother is definitely wanting money and a place to live for free. What kind of sick? And why is that the daughter's responsibility if her mother felt no responsibility?
Shame on her mother for sleeping around and for turning her back on her daughter
How do you know she sick? She is a grown woman so she made her bed, lay in it. She was probably giving money to her boyfriend. Take care of yourself and when she grows up and you are proud of your life achievements you two can talk. Young people do the same to parents who think they have to always help. Seen it both ways..
Absolutely valid decision on your part. If she won't help you, why would you help her? Another commenter said some nonsense about how you should've helped her and it's just that, nonsense. She cheated on her husband and in doing so, dug her own grave, maybe she should've thought out the repercussions of her actions before betraying her husbands trust and yours.
Sounds like she wasn't too sick to cheat on her husband. Not your responsibility. She taught you that.
Forgive as the Father forgave us..pray about the direction you should take
I feel she's going in the right direction. and I never forgive anyone unless they apologize and ask. I set my own course. She has too.
