That is a HIPAA violation and could end up with fraud and other HIPAA fines. He should take her to HIS doctor
I Refused to Be Blamed for Not Giving My MIL a Grandchild, but She Was Hiding Something Big

Family drama, fertility struggles, and in-law conflicts are common but tough to handle. Setting boundaries and managing pressure from relatives can protect your mental health and keep your relationship strong.
Pushed for parenthood.
Hello Bright Side!
So, me and my husband have been married for a year, and lately his parents have been hinting about wanting a grandkid. Like, every family dinner turns into them talking about “when” I’ll get pregnant, not “if.”
The unexpected diagnosis.
Last month, my husband and I finally agreed to get checked, just to see if everything’s good. I did my tests first, and my doctor told me I’m fine. Then my husband did his test and yeah, turns out he’s the one with the fertility issue. I figured we’d deal with it privately.
Demanding what’s not hers.
Well... apparently, he told his mom. Big mistake. She calls me the next day, furious, saying I must have “tricked” him into thinking I was fine. Then she demands, I mean demands, to see my medical records. I told her that’s personal and not happening.
Crossing every boundary.
Two days later, I come home from work and my husband looks pale. He admits his mom went to my clinic, pretending to be me, and tried to get my records. They obviously didn’t give them to her, but still??
Fertility irony uncovered.
Anyway, I went to my doctor to apologize for my MIL’s behavior, and that’s when my doctor told me that during his little stunt, he actually came across her own old test results from years ago, showing she also had fertility issues.
Now I’m just sitting here wondering why she can’t be more supportive of her own son, especially since she knows exactly what those emotions feel like.
Thank you in advance,
Jenny.
Hey, Jenny! Thank you for opening up and sharing your experience, it’s raw, frustrating, and unfortunately, something more people deal with than they admit. So, we tried to gather some advice!
1. Build an emotional safety net outside the marriage.
Friends, a sibling, an online support group, people you can vent to without them trying to play peacemaker with your MIL. Having that safe space where you’re heard and understood without judgment can make all the difference. It helps you process your feelings and gain perspective without added stress.
2. Talk to your husband separately about boundaries.
This needs to be the two of you against the problem, not you vs. his family. He needs to understand that this isn’t about fertility anymore; it’s about trust, privacy, and whether he’s willing to protect you from his family.
3. Give yourself permission to go low-contact.
It’s not cold, it’s self-preservation. You don’t owe her warm family dinners after she impersonated you. Sometimes protecting your own peace means putting distance between yourself and toxic behavior, no matter who it comes from. Prioritizing your mental health isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.
Fertility struggles and difficult in-laws can test even the strongest relationships. How would you handle family members crossing the line, and where would you draw the boundary?

Don't know about this "writer." Honestly, would a doctor divulge information regarding a patient to another patient?
I’m sure it’s someone she’s close to or a small town doctor where everyone knows everyone.
No lol otherwise MIL would have gotten the OP's records. And even then, ILLEGAL. HIPPA exists for a reason..
no. i think its AI story unless they are like best friends but it would still be AMA violation. I have to sign multiples of disclosures every time i need some info sent to another doctor or person etc. I was in outpatient drug rehab for a couple years then had surgery for cancer and it was form after form after form and they have to be specified what to share and to whom. myself, they can trail it on an airplane banner, i dont care. but others do!
This is what makes me think it's a fake story
She needs to find out if she can press charges against the obnoxious mother-in-law.
Your doctor refused to give out information about you but he willingly gave information to you concerning another patient? Either you're a complete liar, which I think you are, or you need a new doctor. I would not want a doctor who brakes HIPPA laws.
