10 Korean Beauty Inventions That Actually Work
Over the last few years, South Korea has become the beauty capital of the world. There’s even a special term known as K-beauty which is used to describe famous Korean skincare products and tricks. Often unexpected, surprising, and even weird for the rest of the world (like using bird nests as a beauty ingredient), these products have proven efficacy and help Korean women (and men) look amazingly young.
We at Bright Side have prepared a short guide to the most popular and unusual beauty products they use in South Korea.
1. Silkworm cocoons as natural facial cleansers
Cocoons are the casing that silkworms spin, made of raw silk thread. Strange as it may seem, they are now widely used in K-beauty for skin exfoliation and cleansing as they contain powder proteins and have a gentle, yet visible effect.
2. Good news: They finally found a healthy way to use red wine!
Beauty products with red wine are a real trend this year. Red wine is said to be extremely rich in antioxidants and has great anti-aging and hydrating properties. This ingredient can now be found in masks, creams, essences and even lip tints.
3. Rubber masks instead of the more familiar sheet masks
Rubber masks do not pull moisture out of the skin when drying (as compared to traditional sheet ones) and they’re said to have unbeatable properties when mixed with boosting products like an essence or a serum.
4. Bubble clay masks are cute, unusual, and effective.
The trick of these masks is that when contacting the air, they produce oxygen bubbles, which increases blood circulation and makes your skin feel much fresher and brighter. And of course, it’s extremely fun watching your face turn into a bubbly-looking cloud!
5. Today, beauty is all about potatoes.
Forget about french fries — potato juice can help you fight dark circles, treat blemishes and brighten the skin. Koreans include this ingredient in sheet masks and essences, and even in DIY beauty products.
6. V masks for the perfect face shape
Though they may look really weird, these masks are said to be super effective for fighting a double chin problem and they make your skin firm and smooth.
7. Broccoli is more than just diet food.
Great news for those who can’t stand broccoli: now you can make use of all the healthy and beneficial properties of this vegetable without having to eat it! Beauty products with broccoli are on the rise now. This ingredient is said to nourish skin, treat acne, and even boost collagen production.
8. Birch juice is the new water.
Birch juice is a syrup extracted from birch trees. It is said to contain 17 amino acids, minerals, enzymes, proteins, antioxidants, and vitamins, all of which are beneficial for your skin. The recent trend is to use it in K-beauty products instead of water.
9. Heat masks for a true sauna effect
Ingredients of this mask start self-heating when they come into contact with the skin and air, which creates an effect similar to a sauna — it opens your pores and makes the skin feel really fresh and clean. Still, the look of this beauty product is really weird.
10. Mayonnaise for hair nutrition
Mayo hair packs, produced by a number of Korean manufacturers, contain almost the same nutritious ingredients as mayonnaise, (but thankfully, they don’t smell like the popular sauce), leaving your hair looking bright, strong, and smelling like vanilla.
Bonus: evidence of the fact that the K-beauty approach is effective
In these pics you can see famous South Korean actresses Kim Hee-ae and Kim Sung-ryung. Both of these beauties are 51 years old this year. Doesn’t this prove that Korean beauty inventions are worth trying?
Bonus 2: For those who still don’t believe it...
In these pics, you can see another famous Korean actress Ha Ji-won when she was 22 and 40 years old. Impressive, right?
