I’ve Tested 8 Crazy Beauty Life Hacks on Myself, and Now I Know Which of Them Are Gems

Bloggers use all kinds of tricks in order to make the process of applying makeup easier and cheaper. They use silverware, children’s cosmetics, and even construction materials such as duct tape. Sometimes, these things look completely unreal — but do they really work?

Especially for Bright Side, I’ve tested these weird but popular recommendations from the Internet.

1. Creating the perfect tone

Life hack: Use 2 colors of a solid corrector — dark and light — and draw a chessboard of squares and mix them together. This way, the tone will be as even as possible.

My result: My skin looks perfect. It didn’t take as much corrector as I thought it would. But the layer of the foundation ended up too thick for me. However, this life hack definitely works.

2. Getting rid of dark circles under the eyes using red lipstick

Life hack: You can use red lipstick and concealer to hide dark circles under the eyes. The sequence of actions requires you to take a shading brush and spread the lipstick around the area under the eyes. Cover the red pigment with the concealer and use a sponge to even out the color.

My result: I tried really hard but no matter what I did or how much powder and concealer I used, I still couldn’t hide the pink color and I ruined my sponge. I want my dark circles back. This doesn’t work.

3. Drawing wings with a spoon

Life hack: A regular spoon can save you from drawing uneven wings of varying thickness. Press the spoon against the corner of your eye and make a line with eyeliner.

My result: I managed to draw identical wings in the first attempt. I pressed the spoon close to my eyebrows and had very simple wings, almost without a curve. I promise that I will practice and use this hack. It really works.

4. Nose contouring with a fork

Life hack: A fork with 4 teeth lets you draw 3 very even lines on the nose — one light in the center, and 2 darker lines on the sides in order to create the illusion of a thinner nose.

My result: The lines were too thin and when I evened them out with a sponge, I didn’t notice any effect whatsoever. When I don’t use a fork, the corrector is put on in thicker lines. The life hack doesn’t make my life easier, so it doesn’t work.

5. Increasing lip size drastically

Life hack: This is a tip for increasing one’s lip size. Just make a line with a pencil, draw a special pattern on the lips and then cover it all with a lighter lipstick and put some lip gloss on top.

My result: My lips really did look bigger. The gloss wouldn’t let people see how far the lines were beyond the lines of my lips. I looked as if I’d just visited a cosmetologist. This life hack works.

6. Using duct tape to create the even cheekbone tone

Life hack: You can use duct tape for face contouring. Blogger Huda Kattan invented this method when she put tape on her face before putting on makeup. I don’t plan to do the same as she did but I will try this on my cheekbones. I have to put 2 pieces of tape on each cheek, put some shades on the triangle, remove the tape and even out the product to hide the clear lines.

My result: I am very satisfied with the result, I especially loved the gradient. I think that this contouring looks very natural. There’s a reason why this life hack is so popular — it definitely works.

7. Using lipstick to draw wings

Life hack: You can draw wings on your eyes with lipstick using a shading brush.

My result: My makeup looked very unusual — I had never worn a color like this before. Unfortunately, it doesn’t last long — 20 minutes later, the lipstick was on my upper eyelid and spread around even though I tried to dry it. It’s not good to use in real life, so I say that the life hack doesn’t work.

8. Making the eyelashes more voluminous

Life hack: This can increase eyelash volume with baby powder or regular cosmetic powder. You have to put on one layer of mascara, then add some powder on top and put on more mascara. The eyelashes should look natural and big.

My result: I just put some mascara on as I usually do on one eye and tried the life hack on the other. I didn’t notice much of a difference, so it doesn’t work.

Lipstick for eyeshadow works for me but not as eyeliner. I hope people be careful enough not to try baby powder on eyelashes as baby powder contain silica and talc that can irritate eyes especially if they went into eyes.

About some of them I heard for the first time, especially about lipstick as concealer.
