If You Have Receding Or Unhealthy Gums, Here Are Proven Solutions

Hardly anyone has perfectly healthy teeth. 20%–90% of children in Europe and America have tooth decay by the age of 6. With time, the number of diseases our teeth and gums are subjected to only increases, so here is what you can do to prevent them.

A perfect smile is a wonderful presentation of a person and a strong brick in the first impression experience. This is why we teach our children to take care of their teeth. But as we grow older, we may encounter difficulties maintaining our teeth and gums in a healthy condition.

How do we identify unhealthy gums?

Some of the following things may show that your gums are damaged or unhealthy:

  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Redness
  • Swollen gums
  • Gums prone to bleeding

All of the above can be traits of gingivitis, which is an early stage of gum disease. But you can prevent those changes or turn them around.

Increase your calcium intake.

A lot of diseases are closely linked to our diet, and the state of our gums is really responsive to changes in calcium intake. Products you can add in larger measures to your diet to increase the amount of calcium you have are:

  • Raw milk
  • Almonds
  • Kale
  • Sardines
  • Yogurt
  • Broccoli
  • Watercress
  • Okra
  • Cheese

Regularly change your dental tools.

Your toothbrush and mouthwash have an expiration date, and if you forget about it, it may cost you some healthy gums as your toothbrush is a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. These are the suggested lifetimes of dental tools:

  • Toothbrush: 3-4 months
  • Mouthwash: 2-3 years after date of manufacture
  • Toothpaste: 2 years after date of manufacture
  • Floss: no expiration date, but loses flavor after one year
  • Tongue brush and cleansers: 2 months

Never neglect checkups.

If you want healthy gums and teeth, never miss an appointment — even if you are scared of the dentist. Remember that the dentist is there to help you. Here are some reminders of how often you should see a specialist:

  • Once every 6 months — routine checkup
  • Once every 3-6 months — professional teeth cleaning

And daily dental care:

  • Brush your teeth every day for at least 2 minutes each time.
  • Use floss or a toothpick after meals.

Prepare and use a remedy against receding gums.

Over time, some of us encounter the problem of receding gums due to incorrect dental care or unhealthy habits like smoking. Here are some suggestions for how to fix this problem:

  • Get used to doing a gum massage. Use 1-2 drops of eucalyptus oil and 1-2 tbsp of water, and gently rub it onto your gums.
  • Learn how to properly clean your teeth, and switch to a smaller toothbrush.
  • Drink a cup of green tea every morning. Its antioxidants will help to maintain healthy gums.

  • Use aloe vera as a toothpaste or mouthwash (for the latter, put aloe vera gel in some water).

  • Kill germs with lemon oil. Mix one oz of virgin olive oil and the juice of a quarter of a lemon. Use it as a mouthwash.

Try oil pulling.

Oil pulling is not extremely pleasant, but it's a powerful way to maintain oral health. Take one tbsp of virgin coconut oil into your mouth, and swirl the oil around in your mouth for 20 minutes. Do not swallow. After pulling, brush your teeth.

Consider using yarrow.

Often overlooked, yarrow has wonderful antibacterial properties. Here's how you can use it:

  • Take one leaf or stem of yarrow.
  • Grind it into a paste-like consistency.
  • Massage it gently onto your gums.
  • Rinse it off with water.

You can also purchase yarrow oil or do the same with any other type of oil (like coconut oil) using a few drops of each. Or you can drink it as a herbal tea.
