Traditional Chinese Medical Practices That Help Heal Your Body From A Variety Of Conditions
The TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) originated in China some 2000 years ago — it is a mix of herbal treatment practices and the belief that the energy flow of “qi” must be intact in order to have a healthy body and mind. Acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping are the tools TCM practitioners use to make the “qi” flow the way it should. These three treatments are believed to help with things ranging from autoimmune diseases to simple headaches. Cupping is widely used by athletes around the world. Swimmer Michael Phelps used it during the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.
We, at Bright Side, found 13 common conditions where acupuncture, cupping and moxibustion can relieve pain and help treat disease along with conventional methods of medicine.
13. Anxiety and Depression
Depression and anxiety are two conditions that often come together. Acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping help relieve some of the symptoms of depression and anxiety. For example, a study found that acupuncture is believed to treat depression during pregnancy.
12. Respiratory conditions
Respiratory conditions from colds to asthma can also be easily treated by either one of the three methods or all of them. A certified TCM practitioner will evaluate your condition before subjecting you to any type of treatment.
We all suffer from some type of allergy during our lives — TCM believes that acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping are a way to relieve most of the symptoms of allergies. Moxibustion, a treatment where mugwort is burned on one of the acupressure points, is used to treat the allergies. It restores the qi energy flow and helps relieve the body of the symptoms.
10. Rheumatoid Arthritis and other autoimmune diseases
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes joints to be swollen and painful. One of the most common TCM treatments for RA and other autoimmune diseases is moxibustion. The key to an autoimmune disease treatment is boosting the immune system. Moxibustion and acupuncture are thought to do the job well.
9. Muscle problems: sprains
Muscle sprains can be treated with all three TCM external practices — acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping. Many athletes worldwide have been using cupping as a complimentary treatment for sore muscles and sprains. The most well known instance is of Michael Phelps, an American Olympic swimmer, who received the treatment during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
8. Blood pressure
High or low blood pressure can also be treated with TCM. A study found out that acupuncture can significantly lower the high blood pressure of patients that already use antihypertensive drugs. This means that used together with conventional medicine, acupuncture can help patients who suffer from high blood pressure.
7. Digestive conditions
Constipation or diarrhea, bloating, or indigestion — all of these conditions can be treated with the use of acupuncture and moxibustion. Since the qi energy is believed to be blocked in the abdomen, acupuncture and moxibustion at specific pressure points will restore the energy flow and help to get rid of constipation.
6. Osteoarthritis and other joint/bone related conditions
People who suffer from osteoarthritis, or “wear and tear” arthritis, will find pain in the joints where the joint cartilage cushion has broken down causing the bones to rub against each other. This condition, as well as many others, can be relieved with the use of acupuncture, cupping, and moxibustion.
5. Any type of pain: head to toe
Pain, whatever the source in the body, according to the TCM belief is when the qi flow has been broken or blocked. To unblock and restore the flow, in other words, to make the pain go away, a mix of external TCM practices such as acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping can be used.
Nausea or vomiting can be stopped by applying acupuncture or moxibustion to specific pressure points on hands, stomach, and chest.
3. Inducing labor, changing the position of breech babies
Only a certified TCM practitioner can perform acupuncture, cupping, or moxibustion on pregnant women. It is also advised that the treatment is done within an official medical institution, such as a hospital. The three practices are known to ease the pain during labor, or even help the fetus turn around if it’s breech.
2. Skin diseases
Warts, blisters, acne, and many other skin conditions can be relieved with cupping and acupuncture. Wet cupping (Hajimah) in particular is good for cases of eczema and psoriasis.
1. Neurological conditions
Many neurological conditions, like Bell’s palsy for example, have been successfully treated by acupuncture. It reduces inflammation, stimulates nerves and muscles, which helps to reduce most of the symptoms of Bell’s palsy.
The TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) is considered complimentary to conventional medicine. Seeking a certified clinic and practitioner is a must when choosing to get treatment with acupuncture, moxibustion or cupping.
