This Lovely Couple Celebrated Their 22nd Wedding Anniversary and Proved All Doubters Wrong
Meet Maryanne and Tommy Pilling who got married in 1995 and were thought to be the first married couple with Down Syndrome in the UK. Critics expressed many doubts about their relationship and said it wouldn’t last very long, but how wrong they were! These guys have been married for 22 years, and their love only grows stronger.
We at Bright Side believe everyone is able to find their true love, and this lovely couple is living proof. Here is their story:
The couple had dated for 18 months before Tommy proposed.
But first the young man asked Maryanne’s mom if he could propose to her daughter. Tommy even had a ring: it was a toy one from a vending machine. Maryanne’s mom agreed immediately and took her future son-in-law to a shop where they bought a real engagement ring.
Maryanne and Tommy tied the knot at St. Mary’s Church in Shoeburyness, Essex, in July 1995.
For their 20th anniversary in 2015, the happy pair renewed their vows, putting all the doubters to shame. The happy little family lives independently but very close to their relatives, who are always ready to help them out when needed.
Maryanne’s sister, Lindi Newman, created a Facebook page dedicated to the couple’s romance which quickly gained thousands of followers.
Lindi said, "Maryanne had dreamed about a big white wedding since she was a little girl, and that’s exactly what she had. It was a beautiful day. When they walk down the street holding hands they make a statement but in a good way. Some people stare: they assume people with Down Syndrome and learning difficulties can’t get married."
"But we also get so many lovely, lovely messages from people who are inspired by their story."
"People worried about their own children or grandchildren with Down Syndrome get hope from Maryanne and Tommy’s story: hope that their children can also fall in love and live happily ever after."
Maryanne added, "My wedding was the best day of my life."
"I was shocked when Tommy proposed, but I didn’t have to think twice about saying yes.
Tommy and I never argue. I love my husband very much. He is my best friend."
