I Turned Off My Phone Notifications for a Week, and Here’s What Happened
How are you guys? Did you manage to adjust to your back-to-school routine? Waking up early and making myself go to sleep before midnight was real torture for me until I decided to do a little EXPERIMENT ON MYSELF. To be honest, I was rather skeptical about the results in the beginning, but what happened later truly AMAZED ME!
In one of the teen magazines, I read that turning off phone notifications can make you calmer and less stressed, so I decided to try it. At first, I was a bit terrified at the idea of turning off ALL my phone notifications. After all, I’m so used to getting alarmed EVERY HALF AN HOUR, that it sometimes feels like my phone is actually a part of my hand. Anyway, I wanted to challenge myself, so I switched off my e-mail notifications first. Then Facebook followed. Instagram — GONE, YouTube — BYE, TikTok — SEE YOU LATER. Muting my WhatsApp was the hardest, and I instinctively kept checking it every hour to see what was new on the first day.
All summer I was staying up late, scrolling through my social media feed and watching funny videos on YouTube. But now that I’m back to school, I know I have to do something about my bedtime routine. I hoped turning off my notifications would help me starting on day 1, but on the first night of my experiment, I couldn’t fall asleep.
It felt like something was missing and thoughts were racing through my head. Anyway, I continued this challenge, and I was quite surprised when I started to notice that things were GETTING BETTER EACH DAY!
Here’s how my life changed just 1 WEEK after I muted my phone:
- I finally managed to adjust to my back-to-school routine, and I’m now peacefully sleeping at 10:30 p.m.
- I feel calm, even though the beginning of the school year is usually very stressful. I don’t actually feel stressed.
- My screen time was reduced DRAMATICALLY. I spend less time looking at my phone, and I can now find better ways to use that “extra” time. Now I’d rather go for a walk or read a book instead of trying to catch up with the latest trends on TikTok.
- It’s easier for me to focus on my studies. Miracles happen when your phone doesn’t distract you every other minute. Turns out, I can work on an essay for an hour straight without getting distracted.
It’s been 10 days since the beginning of my experiment and, to be honest, I don’t want to stop. I actually turned on my WhatsApp notifications today, but I switched off all group chat alarms so that it doesn’t distract me too often. As for other apps, they remain muted, and I have a certain period of time during the day when I quickly check them all and close them. We’ll see where this experiment leads me, but for now, I’M WILLING TO CONTINUE my peaceful life without phone notifications popping up on the screen every second.
What about you guys? Do you spend a lot of time on your phones? Would you dare to do the same experiment? Let’s discuss it in the comments!
