10 Style Mistakes That Men Are Still Making in 2020

The twenty-first century is the perfect time to experiment with your style as it allows you to combine many different fashion trends and express yourself through individuality. Even though it’s always best to be yourself, in fashion, there are some simple rules that must be followed. For a man, details are what can make or break an entire outfit — choosing the wrong tie for your body type can ruin the whole look! To look stylish and attractive, you have to pay attention to the smallest mistakes men still make to this day.

Bright Side is here to open your eyes to the details you might miss when styling your outfit in the morning. Here are 10 mistakes you can easily avoid in order to look sharp every day.

1. Your blazer is too long or too short.

A suit is definitely a staple piece in men’s fashion and it often includes a blazer. This piece of clothing can make or break your entire look, so make sure you choose it wisely. This also goes for the coats men tend to wear with their suits — it’s important that the length of the coat covers your blazer.

2. Almost all your T-shirts are branded.

Yes, wearing branded T-shirts can be very appealing, but it’s easy to go over the top with them. Some men think branding is the only way to show the quality of their clothing items, but that’s not always the case. You might want to wear T-shirts that make you comfortable, whether they’re branded or not — we’re sure nobody will notice! It’s much more attractive to see a man in a monochrome T-shirt, but if you insist on wearing just branded items, try to look for some with smaller logos or brands. Sometimes less really is more.

3. You buy ill-fitting pants, thinking they’ll fit in the future.

Whether you mostly wear jeans, retro slacks, or stylish suit-pants, it’s imperative that they fit you well! What’s the point of buying jeans that are too long? They’ll just get worn out sooner if you keep stepping on them. Some men may think this will make their legs look thinner but in reality, they will look saggy. Pants that are too wide are also a miss. It doesn’t matter if you think they will fit you better in the future, save your money and skip buying them for now.

4. Your undershirt is showing.

It’s not a crime to wear an undershirt as long as it’s not showing. We all know it’s important to protect your dress shirt from sweat and stains, but the undershirt is considered underwear so according to etiquette rules, it should absolutely not be visible. In addition to that, it adds unnecessary horizontal lines that ruin your body proportions. But if you really wish to unbutton your dress shirt, maybe opt for a V-neck shirt underneath instead.

5. You accessorize way too much.

We all tend to overdo it with the accessories from time to time, but as Coco Chanel once said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” This is great advice, especially because women like men that look well-groomed. The best way to achieve that is with minimal accessories that match your outfit.

6. You wear sandals with socks.

Most of us assumed this trend would’ve died out by now, but apparently men still do this! Wearing sandals is considered to belong to the beach or summertime. It’s very unappealing to see men wearing them around all the time, especially if you’re doing it with socks. Sandals should be worn on bare feet so you feel comfortable. If you don’t like showing your feet, think about investing in closed-toe shoes.

7. You wear all the colors together at once.

You may be a colorful person and like showing it inside and out — and that’s fine — just make sure it’s not too much. Yellow pants, a pink shirt, a red blazer, and green sneakers are a lot to take in all at once! Generally, wearing bright colors isn’t a good idea if you want to look sharp, and combining them all together will definitely turn heads but not in a good way. Dressing in basic colors will make you look sophisticated and more put-together. And if you want to show a pop of color, choose a small staple piece such as an accessory or some fun-looking socks.

8. You combine suits with sneakers.

A little freedom in style is always welcome, but don’t make the mistake of wearing sneakers with a suit. It’s not just about the fact that it doesn’t make sense — after all, sneakers are made for running, not attending meetings — but it will likely ruin your chance of ever looking dressy or attractive. Make sure you have at least one pair of dress shoes hidden somewhere in the house just in case a black-tie event ever comes up.

9. You like your T-shirts tucked in.

Tucking your T-shirts into your pants or sweatpants won’t make you look ’’cool." In fact, it will do just the contrary since it will make you look like a middle-aged man. Leave your T-shirt un-tucked as tucking it in will crinkle it up, giving you unwanted lines on your body. If you’re wearing sweatpants, the un-tucked T-shirt will cover the drawstrings and you’ll look tidier — not like you’ve just rolled out of bed. Of course, there’s an exception to every rule and for this one, it’s tucking in the undershirt one wears with a dress shirt.

10. Your tie is not compatible with your body type.

Without even knowing it, many men choose the wrong tie for themselves. Yes, you should choose your tie according to your body type — who knew! First, pay attention to the length of your tie — it shouldn’t hide your belt buckle but rather, emphasize it. The second common mistake is wearing a tie that’s too wide for your torso. Generally, a tie should be from 3 inches to 3.75 inches (7.5 cm to 9.5 cm) for an average-sized man, so if your body type is thinner than average, this is something to look out for. The tie serves as a finishing touch to a well-thought-out outfit, so it’s essential you take into consideration all of your options when investing in one.
