Tips & tricks

Mayonnaise is one of the most popular condiments used all over the world. For example, in the USA, people spend $2 billion on it each year. However, it turns out that mayonnaise can be used for more than just food since it offers lots of beauty and household benefits as well.

Bright Side made a list of the most unexpected ways to use mayonnaise that you definitely haven’t heard about before.

10. Nail care

If your fingernails are brittle and prone to breakage, a bowl of mayo is the best way for you to start a manicure at home. Simply dip your fingers into mayonnaise and wait for about 5 minutes, then rinse the substance off. This bath will make your nails look stronger, healthier and will soften your cuticles.

9. Skin moisturizer

To nourish your dry skin, take some mayonnaise and add a teaspoon of olive oil to it. Stir the substance well and apply it to the dry areas. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes, then wipe it away with a damp cloth. The oil and vinegar in the mayo will keep your skin hydrated and prevent it from flaking.

8. Sunburn treatment

If you want to ease pain caused by minor burns and sunburns quickly, you can apply mayonnaise to the affected areas. The condiment will soothe your damaged skin, keep it moisturized, and reduce the burning sensation and redness. And the vinegar in the mayo will act as a natural anesthetic to numb the pain.

7. Gum remover

Do you need to remove bubble gum from carpeting in your living room, a table in the kitchen, or from your own hair with ease? Just apply a little mayo to the gum and massage the substance into the unwanted hunk instead of rubbing and scrubbing. The oily condiment will loosen the gum’s grip and allow it to be removed without leaving a trace.

6. Hair conditioner

If you suffer from dry and straw-like hair, mayonnaise will come to its rescue. All you need to do is replace your everyday hair conditioner with this condiment. The egg yolk in the mayo contains lecithin that will encourage hair growth while the vinegar will exfoliate the scalp. As a result, you’ll get soft, healthy, shiny hair.

Mayonnaise is also a natural lice killer. To get rid of these annoying parasites, apply a little mayo onto your hair, cover it with a shower cap and leave on for about 8 hours. After that, remove the substance with normal shampoo. Vegetable oil in the mayo will act like a glue that can suffocate adult and young head lice.

5. Crayon remover

Have your kids turned the walls in your house into a canvas? Instead of scolding them, take some mayo and a sponge and coat the crayon marks with the condiment. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes and then wipe it off with a clean cloth. The mayonnaise will neatly clean up the walls without affecting the paint.

4. Silver cleaner

Mayonnaise is one of the best natural silver polishers. So if you want to make your silverware shine without using chemical substances, simply apply the mayo to your spoons and forks with a soft cloth, then rinse it off. The mild acidity from the lemon will remove the tarnish and the oil will leave a beautiful shine on your cutlery.

3. Sticker remover

To remove stubborn sticky price tags from your glassware, take the following steps. Firstly, rub the sticker with your fingernail to remove as much sticker residue as possible. After that, apply a small amount of mayonnaise to the remaining sticker and let it sit for about 15-20 minutes. The glue will loosen and you will be able to peel it off completely.

2. Hinge lubricant

If a squeaky and creaky old door hinge is driving you crazy, there’s no need to rush to the nearest hardware store and buy a special lubricant. Instead, open your fridge and take out a bottle of mayonnaise! Apply a dab of the mayo to the hinge, then open and close the door a few times to distribute the substance. Enjoy the silence!

1. Wood repair

Did you scratch your wood dining table with a knife or accidentally crack your favorite statuette made out of wood? If something like that happens, fill the crack up with a generous amount of mayonnaise and let it sit for a couple of days. With time, the combination of protein and oil will moisturize the wood and cause it to swell. And the fats in the mayo will help seal the crack leaving it less noticeable.
