There’s an old saying: find something you like to do and find some way to get paid to do it. While the saying is probably not meant to be as literal as it sounds, you’d be surprised to learn that there are people who actually manage to make a living simply by doing things everyday that are otherwise free.

1. Riding on water slides
If you’re looking for a fancy pool club, it’s probably because you love waterslides! A hotel chain or a large travel company might hire people to try out their water slides in order to make sure they’re safe and fun. You could write reviews about them for travel media.
2. Watching Netflix shows all day
We all know that person who spends all their time off work on the couch watching whatever they can on Netflix or other similar platforms. In fact, some of you reading this may be such a person. Well, you’re in luck! There really is such a thing as a “Netflix tagger” who gets paid to watch Netflix all day. These workers are tasked with collecting relevant metadata that is used for Netflix’s search and category services. They are also tasked with deciding a show’s age rating and to keep an eye out for nudity or violence.
3. Managing a bingo tournament
Little kids often play bingo as a game only to return to the sport when they reach their twilight years thanks to local churches and community centers that make it popular. Did you know you can make a career out of managing the game? Often hired at casinos, bingo managers ensure that federal and state gaming regulations are upheld and ensure prize-related transactions go through. 4. Chewing and trying out new gum
Do you like gum? There are gumologists who help candy companies try out new kinds of gum while they also help to develop reviews for new projects. A person can reportedly earn up to $107,500 a year by trying out gum. Just imagine all the gumballs you could buy with that money...and then remember that you would already get gum anyway at work!
5. Tasting chocolate
If you have a sweet tooth, gum is not always enough. Some, if not most of us, need a nice piece of chocolate once in a while. It might please you to know that you can get paid to taste chocolate. Obviously, eating too much chocolate is unhealthy, meaning that tasters are expected to only try small doses or spit the chocolate out after sampling. They are also asked to drink water and eat crackers to clean their palate. In other words, these people get paid to taste chocolate and eat crackers.
6. Taking photos and selling them to stock image websites
A lot of people love to play with their camera phones, but some people find a way to make a little money from the random photos they take. Microstock sites such as iStockPhoto or Shutterstock purchase photos from amateur photographers by taking them on as a contributor. Often, the contributor uploads a photo for no charge and the site takes a percentage of each sale.
7. Being somebody’s temporary friend or family member
There are plenty of lonely souls out there with money to spare that are willing to spend some money just to have somebody keep them company once in a while. Places like Rent-A-Friend allow people to become registered “friends” who get paid by people who want some company now and again. People pay their “friends” directly but the website also charges people to use the service. For those who want to go one step further, there are companies in Japan that allow people to rent out entire families.
8. Attend somebody’s wedding (or other life events)
Everyone imagines having a big storybook wedding, but your guests are normally limited to you and your spouse’s limited social circles unless you or your spouse is related to royalty. For people who want really big numbers in attendance, there are companies that hire people to pose as guests for various life events like weddings. And they don’t have to sit in as random guests either — people can even be hired as bridesmaids. There are also similar jobs for other life events like professional mourners at funerals.
While this might seem unorthodox, this idea probably has origins in cultures where weddings and similar affairs were major events that included the whole community.
9. Grocery shopping for other people
Unless you grow your own food, you probably have some experience going to a grocery store. That said, there are many people who need to get groceries but are too busy or unable to leave their house. Because of this, there are many people willing to pay other people to go to the market for them. There are many ways to get involved; some people can hire themselves out by starting their small grocery shopping business, but some markets even offer delivery services for customers which means they likely hire shoppers.
10. Going to sleep
A job really can’t get easier than this. This is a job you can do in your sleep...because you are literally getting paid to sleep! There are various reasons for people to get hired to sleep: scientific studies, testing out beds, and even special art shows. For times where sleeping must be done over long periods, professional sleepers are sometimes required to take medicine to induce sleeping, so being a heavy sleeper isn’t even a requirement.
11. Listening to music
A lot of people like to listen to music while doing their household chores and if they’re lucky, while they’re working. There are quite a few places that will actually pay you to listen to music like Slicethepie, MusicXray, FusionCash, HitPredictor, and Welocalize. The catch is that many of these places ask you to transcribe them or write reviews about the music.
12. Sticking with a daily exercise routine
People often feel that work keeps them too busy to exercise, but there is another way. Some of these places earn their money by already working for weight loss studies and are looking for various ways people find success at losing weight.
Bonus: Taking care of hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are a popular pet around the world but you can also get a job taking care of them in the wild. A wildlife group in England, Suffolk Wildlife Trust, hires “hedgehog officers” to help monitor local hedgehogs and make sure they are safe in the town of Ipswich. The role also requires the officers to promote hedgehog awareness to the local people.
