A 14-Minute Morning Routine That Can Wake You Up Better Than Coffee
Coffee is amazing — there is no denying that. More than half of the American adult population drinks a cup of it every day. The caffeine present in coffee is what makes it so effective when it comes to waking us up in the morning. If it’s not the drink of your choice, or if you’re trying to cut back, then the good news is that there are many alternatives to wake you up and fill you with energy.

1. Use the no-snooze policy.
Wake up the second your alarm starts ringing. Snoozing the alarm and trying to catch a few more minutes of sleep can be counter-productive. A good strategy is to keep your alarm clock far from your bed so that in order to turn it off, you have to leave the bed. Alarm clocks raise stress levels and make you wake up agitated if you have to hear it over and over again after pressing the snooze button.
The next time you feel like hitting the snooze button, remember what comedian Dimitri Martin said: “Hitting the snooze button in the morning doesn’t even make sense. It’s like saying, I hate getting up in the morning so I do it over and over and over again.”
2. Don’t start your day by checking social media from your bed.
However tempting it might be to curl up under the warm blanket after waking up, don’t do it. As soon as you wake up, leave the bed and get active.
A newer trend is waking up and checking social media feeds while still in the bed. It’s better to avoid it. Dedicate the first couple of hours after waking up to healthier pursuits.
3. Bask in the sunshine.
As soon as you wake up, open up the curtains. Sunlight tells the brain that it is now time to wake up. Sunlight regulates your biological clock and helps keep it on track. Studies have proven that people who are deprived of light for long periods of time experience dramatic changes in their sleep pattern, sleep quality, and hormone cycles. Experts also recommend taking a morning walk.
4. Don’t ever skip your breakfast.
Starting the day off with a healthy breakfast will keep you energized and will prevent you from feeling low. A healthy breakfast should combine healthy carbs, fiber, and protein. Eating colorful fruits and vegetables also helps as color plays a vital role in increasing awareness in the brain. As Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute suggests, seeing a bright, vibrant hue when you open your eyes gets the adrenaline going.

Yerba Mate is a popular South African tea. Due to its caffeine content, it is an effective substitute for coffee to help you start your day. In addition to that, it is also known to have many health benefits.

Smoothies are an amazing choice for a quick morning beverage, especially for those in a hurry. Most smoothies offer plenty of fruits which are a good source of complex carbohydrates. But keep in mind that they are also high in sugar!

While it may sound funny, a study published in 2015 showed that respondents reported raised energy levels and heightened positive emotions after watching cat videos online. Videos of other cute animals could also do the trick according to a study in 2012.

Chewing gum has been shown to positively impact wakefulness. If you are feeling sleepy in the morning, try chewing gum because it’s particularly effective in improving memory-related functions of the brain. So if you have to wake up early and prepare for your exams, you know what to do!!

Bonus: The 90-second shower technique
If taking a warm shower in the morning is part of your wake-up strategy, then you have got your strategy all wrong!! In fact getting a hot shower is what doctors advise people to do who have trouble falling asleep. So if your goal is to say goodbye to those weary, sleepy eyes follow this 90-second shower technique instead:
1. Stand in a cold shower (we mean as cold as possible) for about 30 seconds.
2. For the next 30 seconds stand under water as hot as you can bear.
3. Finally, for the last 30 seconds turn the water icy again.
