10 Fashion Tips That Can Make Your Clothes Look Expensive (Good News: You Might Save a Ton of Money)

If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on clothes, you can still look really stylish and you don’t have to save for months to buy the real Chanel suit or Prada dress. Even celebrities often choose ordinary brands.

Bright Side has made a list of tips that will help you look chic and elegant without spending a fortune on clothes.

1. The right fabric

Mass-market brands often make clothes that look as if they were made by famous designers but it’s really hard to find good quality fabrics among them. And not everyone can buy clothes made of cashmere, natural silk, or leather. Some affordable fabrics can look expensive and others may look very cheap.

Linen clothing, faux suede, and cotton look expensive. And conversely even the best designs are ruined by viscose and acrylic. Polyester clothes can fall into both groups — it just depends on the item.

2. Color unity

“Simplicity is the essence of elegance.”

There is a reason why fashion designers and conglomerates come out with sets of clothing in the same or similar colors every season. Designers experiment with prints, and create diverse and elegant looks.

We can come close to haute couture if we choose several of our favorite colors and add clothes of similar shades to our wardrobe. Another nice bonus is that, since everything matches, it will be easier to pick out your clothes every morning.

3. White shirts

Gianfranco Ferré gave the white shirt (which is a basic in any look) a new life in fashion. The Italian designer used to say that a white blouse is never the same and it is never a bad choice.

They are good for women of any age if they choose the right cut and material. The white color will highlight the femininity and will perfect your look in any situation.

4. Handbag

“Fashion is when a woman takes a new handbag and her entire life changes.”

A handbag is one the most important accessories that we can’t live without at work, on the weekend, or at an event. If it’s a famous brand, it always attracts attention and highlights the status of its beautiful owner.

But for those who don’t want to spend too much on a handbag, Evelina Khromtchenko has a great piece of advice: never buy fakes. It’s better to choose something affordable and original. Look at the work of designers that are at the start their careers. Something unique can be found absolutely unexpectedly and you’ll become the new fashion icon.

5. Buttons

It is amazing how a regular shirt, a cardigan, or a coat can be transformed just by changing the buttons. Cheap clothes are usually equipped with regular plastic buttons, but even if you don’t have a lot of money, you can easily replace them with glass, wooden, or metal buttons.

You can find really interesting options in sewing shops, in your grandmothers’ sewing cabinet, or on old clothes that have been in your wardrobe for a long time.

6. Good color

“Women think of all colors except the absence of color. I have said that black has it all. White too. Their beauty is absolute. It is the perfect harmony.”

Clothes that have faded or become darker rarely look better than when they were purchased. It’s always really hard to get rid of these clothes, but you absolutely have to do that unless you want to ruin your image and look cheap. And this is not only true for black clothes, but for white ones too. In order for them to be beautiful, they should be washed very carefully.

7. The right size and the right balance of proportions

Zac Posen is convinced that a well-fitting dress can make any woman feel confident and beautiful. That’s why you need to choose clothes that look good on you instead of trying to put on something that doesn’t fit you. On the other hand, the designer advises that you not pay attention to the size of the garment when choosing clothing and to not to be afraid of trying on clothes a couple of sizes bigger.

Another valuable piece of advice from Posen: our bodies often don’t fit the clothing sold in stores, so it’s important to take your body into account. For example, if you have wide hips and a dress looks perfect on them but it’s too wide in the waist, it’s better to buy it and alter it a little, instead of wasting a crazy amount of time looking for a different one.

The designer also recommends balancing the proportions of your clothes if you don’t have an hourglass shape.

8. Smell

“One must smell a woman before even seeing her.”

A perfume can tell a lot about a person: it can highlight their status and temperament, their age, and even their attitude toward life. Just like clothing and accessories, it represents our style, taste, and individuality.

Fashionable girls don’t use too much perfume. They respect other people’s private space and if they have to be on public transport or in a building for a long time, they won’t use a lot of perfume. Tip: in order not to use too much perfume, you can try a perfumed deodorant.

9. Beige

Beige is unique, but it’s often underestimated. On one hand, it’s classically neutral and looks good with almost any other color. On the other hand, when choosing beige, we look more luxurious and trendy. This is why many girls have chosen beige coats for decades.

10. The beauty in ourselves

“A woman’s hands are her calling card. Her neck and bust are her passport.”

As Karl Lagerfeld once said, you can look perfect and elegant even wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Well-designed clothes can be found at any price range but a lot depends on the person, their body shape, their skin condition, their makeup, and their confidence. Because even the most expensive clothes won’t hide our fears.
