10 Unrevealed Facts That Won’t Leave Your Mind Once You Learn Them

Our life is full of surprises, and sometimes even ordinary things turn out to be not so simple if we look at them from a different angle.

Bright Side gathered the most astounding facts that you definitely haven't heard before.

10. There are 19 ingredients in McDonald's French fries.

In addition to the standard combination of potatoes, oil, and salt, McDonald's French fries contain natural beef flavoring, citric acid, sodium acid pyrophosphate (to maintain color), dimethylpolysiloxane (an anti-foaming agent), and other ingredients which are not so good for your health.

9. The stinging shrub in Australia can make you have suicidal thoughts.

Gympie gympie, an Australian stinging shrub, can inject you with a neurotoxin so powerful it will actually make you want to commit suicide. The pain from its stings is so intense that even animals and insects try to kill themselves.

8. Ordinary beverages contain a huge amount of sugar.

It's amazing how much sugar is in the drinks sold in stores. One can of Coca-Cola contains 10 whole teaspoons of sugar. This highly exceeds the recommended daily sugar intake even if you don't take into account other drinks and meals.

7. A great part of our actions is determined by our subconscious.

Although humans are highly developed and intelligent creatures, sometimes it may seem shocking how primitively our brain works. Due to our uncontrolled subconscious processes, we may be happy just because it's sunny outside. Or we might fall in love with someone just because of their smell.

Our subconscious may also produce the so-called Mere Exposure Effect, which implies that the more often you see someone or something, the more you like them.

6. Drowned people don't reach the surface of Lake Tahoe.

The Lake of Drowned Bodies, or Lake Tahoe, is situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and is said to harbor thousands of dead bodies – all perfectly preserved in its depths.

The water in the lake is so cold that people who drown there don't float to the surface; they simply sink to the very bottom. And because of the lake's extreme depth, divers can't get down to get the bodies without special equipment.

5. We are in the middle of a mass extinction right now.

Scientists say that today we are facing the 6th distinction happening on Earth. They call this phenomenon a "biological annihilation" as billions of animal populations have disappeared due to hunting, the destruction of their habitats, the introduction of new species, and the spread of diseases. And all this is done by humans.

4. Jelly beans are coated in bug shellac.

Have you ever wondered why the outer surface of a jelly bean is so hard, crunchy, and shiny? To achieve this effect, manufacturers use shellac, which is a resin secreted by the female lac bug. Unfortunately, it's bad news for vegetarians as shellac is an animal byproduct.

3. Snow White had no job.

In the movie, Snow White has a job taking care of the Seven Dwarfs, but in real life, the actress Adriana Caselotti never worked again after she voiced the Disney princess. This was due to a contract she signed with Disney – the company didn't want her voice being featured anywhere else.

The worst part of it is that Caselotti earned only $970 for the film. But she didn't regret her decision. She stated in an interview once that "It's much better to have been part of one of the greatest films ever made than 10 mediocre ones."

2. Toy Story has some Easter eggs pointing to The Shining.

One of the greatest horror films directed by Stanley Kubrick has a lot in common with the beloved Toy Story films. The most evident similarity is the carpet in Sid the bully's house, which looks like the carpet found in the terrifying Overlook Hotel in The Shining.

Besides that, the number 237 appears several times in the Disney movie. It is the same number of the most haunted room in the Overlook Hotel in Kubrick's film.

1. There is a lack of mother characters in Walt Disney movies.

Not all of us have noticed that Walt Disney's stories are centered on the death and loss of mother characters: Bambi's mother was killed, Ariel grows up without a mother, Quasimodo's mother gets violently killed at the beginning of the film, Cinderella was raised by her stepmother, and Snow White was raised by the Evil Queen.

The reason for this was his grieving for his own mother who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the house he bought for his parents. While his father survived, she wasn't so lucky. The guilt stayed with Walt Disney his whole life.
