9 Actors Who Proved, Once Again, That Their Hearts Are as Big as the Universe

Many celebrities dedicate much of their time and efforts to certain foundations and fundraising campaigns. But more interesting are the more “minor” stories or gestures of goodwill that portray them as people who always seem to think of others. And, indeed, there are famous people who are in line for sainthood and are generous beyond belief.

1. Keanu Reeves

It’s well known today that Keanu Reeves has given away $75 million from his earnings from The Matrix to the special effects and costume design crews. But not many of us know how generous and respectful he was to some of his other colleagues. For instance, just for having Al Pacino in The Devil’s Advocate cast, he cut his salary so the budget could afford the actor. He did the same thing for Gene Hackman in The Replacements but never hyped it up or brought attention to it.

2. Steve Buscemi

Steve Buscemi used to be a New York firefighter before diving into his acting career. And on September 11, 2001, he returned to his job working 12-hour shifts for several days, searching for survivors in the rubble of the World Trade Center. “It was a privilege to be able to do it,” said the actor. He was able to work and connect with the firehouse he used to work with and with some of the guys he worked alongside. He was also able to serve his country and be helpful at a devastating time.

3. Colin Farrell

In 2007 at the Toronto International Music Festival, Colin Farrell encountered a houseless man sitting on the curb of a local restaurant. Instead of ignoring the man, Farell sat down next to him and chatted with him. He said he’d pay for a place for him to stay for a year and promised to check up on him via text. That changed the man’s life completely! “He’s a down-to-earth guy,” he said. “He’s willing to help you out. If you show respect, it goes a long way.” Since then, he hasn’t been homeless, and that’s a blessing.

4. Tom Cruise

One rainy night, while driving along Wilshire Boulevard, Cruise witnessed a woman get hit by a car. It was Heloisa Vinhas, a 23-year-old Brazilian-born aspiring actress. The driver of the car sped away but Cruise asked someone to call for an ambulance and then followed the injured woman to a medical center. When he discovered she had no insurance, he paid her $7,000 emergency room bill.

5. Zach Galifianakis

Zach Galifianakis used to live in an apartment that was so small he couldn’t even fit a washing machine. So he had to take all his laundry to a local laundromat. There, he met Elizabeth Haist, known as Mimi, who worked there for more than 2 decades. They became close friends, but after The Hangover success, Galifianakis could afford a better place to live and stopped visiting the laundromat. However, he never forgot about Mimi.

When he found out that his 87-year-old friend lost her job and became homeless, he bought her an apartment and paid for all the costs ever since. And several times, he even invited and walked with her on the red carpet. “Mimi helps me feel better [during those events],” says Galifianakis. And she seems to enjoy it even more than her sweet friend.

6. Adele

During the great Grenfell Tower fire in 2017 in London, people didn’t expect to see Adele in the crowd. She appeared there with her husband, Simon Koneki, barefoot and casually dressed. She was visibly emotional, hugging and comforting victims, not to mention the support she gave them all afterward.

Right after the event, she visited some of the firefighters who tackled the blaze to support them as well. She just came up, had a cup of tea with them, and then joined them for a minute of silence. The fact that she has not said a word about it proves how amazingly sincere she was.

7. Christopher Reeve

After Christopher Reeve was paralyzed, sustaining a spinal injury while horseback riding in 1995, he joined forces with the American Paralysis Association (APA). It is dedicated to “curing spinal cord injuries by funding innovative research and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis through grants, information, and advocacy.” Later, the APA was renamed The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to honor the film star and his devoted wife. Reeve continued to make many television appearances to help raise money for the cause until the very last days of his life.

8. Anthony Stewart Head

Buffy actor Anthony Stewart Head and his wife once reached out to a young trans fan and invited him to come to their farm. They spent a day with him, took him to the fanciest restaurant, introduced him to their horses, took lovely photos, which were printed and signed, and even gave him some tips on an essay he was writing on Shakespeare for school. “Most importantly, however, they gave me what I had been lacking in my life up until that point — affirmation, compassion, and belief in my abilities,” said the boy.

9. Robin Williams

Following the actor’s tragic death, a number of people have come up with inspiring stories about how he touched their lives. The father of Jessica Cole who died of brain cancer in 2004 explained how Robin Williams chartered a private plane to visit his dying daughter in North Carolina. Williams was her hero. And hopefully, her wish came true. The meeting was arranged through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Williams spent several hours cheering her up and acted like he had known her forever.
