A Mexican Company Turns Avocados Into Disposable Items That Decompose in 240 Days, and It’s a Fantastic Way to Beat Plastic Pollution

If we realized that almost all the plastic ever produced still exists today in some form and is not going away for thousands of years, we would be more committed to the reduce, reuse, recycle lifestyle. Luckily for us, some pioneer companies are making it easier for us to live by that motto, like Biofase, an innovative Mexican company that uses avocados to create disposables.

Bright Side also wants to inspire you to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle by sharing the good news that things are starting to change for the better.

When Scott Munguía began studying Chemical Engineering, he never thought he would end up revolutionizing the bio-degradable industry. It all started as a class project, but transforming avocado pits into reusable utensils was not only a good idea for an A, it was also a good business idea.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Scott and 2 friends founded Biofase. It’s a company that recaptures avocado pits, which are a large part of Mexican industrial waste. They basically intercept them before they’re discarded by guacamole and avocado oil production companies, and transform them into cutlery.

They produce knives, forks, spoons, and straws that are 100% bio-degradable and decompose in 240 days, unlike the thousands of years that it takes plastic to degrade.

“Everything that exists on earth is part of a natural cycle. The problem with plastic is that it doesn’t belong to any of these cycles”, explains Scott. But in this case, the products are made of bioplastic that can be absorbed by nature and become useful again to the earth.

The company is huge and growing. They manufacture between 300 and 400 tons of cutlery and straws per year and are planning on launching a line of plates and food containers. And because great ideas travel fast, Biofase now exports to their Central American neighbors, the U.S., and parts of Europe.

What do you think about this idea? Do you think other types of natural waste could be recycled this way? Leave your comments below!
