How 7 Human Body Parts Might Evolve Over Time

Curiosities
year ago

We don’t look like the previous generations. Hence, the future generations won’t look like us either. As Heraclitus said, “The only constant in life is change,” though it’s hard to foresee the future. Scientists believe the best way to predict the future is by looking at the past. They envisaged different ways humans would look in centuries to come, based on the assumption that past trends would continue.

The Bright Side team went on a journey to find out what’s in store for the future of human evolution.

1. We may have webbed fingers and toes.

Fingers are of great help when it comes to writing and picking stuff up. Toes, on the other hand, are essential for our overall balance. But in the upcoming centuries, with the risk of global warming, humans may end up with webbed fingers and toes, so they can swim better and move quickly through the water.

2. We may lose the pink fold at the corner of our eye.

The remnant of a third eyelid is the small pink skin tucked into the corner of your eye. It is vestigial in humans, meaning it no longer performs its original function. Its primary role was to protect the eye and keep it moist. In the future, we probably won’t need it, and in the future, humans might not have a tiny pink fold in the corner of their eye.

3. We might have a smaller rib cage.

Breathing underwater without the help of sophisticated equipment appears unrealistic at the moment. But if we were to live underwater because sea levels have risen, we’d have to figure something out. Humans will slowly but surely grow some artificial gills.

By growing these grills, our lungs would shrink down because we wouldn’t need them for breathing. Since the size of the lungs correlates with the size of the ribcage, the waist would shrink. Let’s say that future humans would enjoy an effortless hourglass shape.

4. We may have cat-like eyes.

If you are a fan of swimming, you’d know that vision underwater is blurry. Also, you’d notice that the salty water doesn’t feel good against the eyes. Hence, if we’re to become inhabitants of the underwater world, we’d need sharp vision like cats. The extra layer in the retina would help improve our eyesight in the dark, murky waters.

5. Our jawline may shrink.

Early humans used to have long, sharp teeth and a wide jawline to help them cut and chew their food. Nowadays, our jaw size has decreased because we cook our food and make it softer before eating it. In the future, it’s probable that we’d rely more on processed food that looks like a liquid or a pill to meet our caloric need to save more time, resources, and energy. This step will make our jaw shrink even more.

6. Women may be shorter and chubbier.

If we don’t wind up underwater, the future woman will be a fertile woman who’s happy with her curves. According to a recent study, females are probably going to be a little bit smaller and plumper, have stronger hearts, lower cholesterol levels, and reach menopause later in life.

7. We may have youthful skin forever.

A lot of scientists think that humans will eventually populate the solar system. So, if a portion of humanity led their life in space, their bodies would automatically be affected by the new weightless environment. On earth, the skin sags because of gravity. This means that in space, where there’s no gravity, we can kiss fine lines and wrinkles goodbye.

What are the changes you’re looking forward to the most? Are there any changes you dislike? If you had the choice, how would you like the human body to evolve?
