This Zoo Lets You Name a Cockroach After an Ex and Feed It to Animals for Charity

Curiosities
year ago

When we look up how to get over our ex, there are hundreds of pieces of advice fed — pun intended — to us: that we should process our emotions, talk about it with our close friends and family, examine why the relationship didn’t work, and keep ourselves busy. Each one of us grieves differently and on our own timeline. The San Antonio Zoo found an unconventional way to help us heal from a breakup — turn our exes into crunchy snacks.

The Cry Me a Cockroach fundraiser has been making waves for the past 4 years.

The goal is to support the San Antonio Zoo’s mission of creating a better future for wildlife, both in Texas and globally. The event takes place every year on Valentine’s Day. You can donate to name a cockroach, a rodent, or a veggie after, in their words, “your not-so-special someone.”

The $5.00, $10.00, or $25.00 donations include a digital Valentine’s Day Card showing your support for the Cry Me a Cockroach Fundraiser. If you prefer, you can choose to notify your foe they were named after a cockroach, rodent, or veggie, along with their own digital Valentine’s Day Card and personalized message.

The best part about the fundraiser is the VIP package.

With an upgraded $150 donation, the San Antonio Zoo will create a personalized video that you can send to your not-so-special someone, where one animal, selected by the zoo, will munch on the chosen leaf, cockroach, or rodent. You can watch an example of one of these videos here.

Last year they received more than 8,000 donations from all 50 states and 30 different countries and the most popular names submitted were Jacob and Sarah. This year, Zach, Ray, and Adam are among the leading ones. To submit your own, follow the steps here and make sure to do so before Valentine’s Day.

How many of your exes are you still friends with? Will you make a submission to the Cry Me a Cockroach fundraiser?
