What Generation Z Is Like and Why It’s Believed They’re Better Than Us
Millennials are the center of attention more so than any other generations that came before them. But they are quickly being replaced with post-millennials that are extremely different from previous generations. They’re known as Generation Z or linksters because of how much they’re linked to technology and devices. They’re the people who were born after 1996, and every year there are more and more of them. According to some predictions, by the year 2020, this generation will make up about 1/3 of the earth’s population and they’ll be the biggest group of consumers.
Bright Side found some information about who post-millennials are, what they want from their lives, how they’re different from their parents, and why they’re better than previous generations in many aspects.
Post-millennials want to start earning money on their own much earlier than their parents did. Many modern children were born during the time of the global economic crisis, so there are very few dreamers or downshifters among them — 72% of teenagers want to create their own startup or business. Additionally, post-millennials want to turn their hobbies into a source of stable income.
According to statistics, 75% of young people ages 18 to 24 think that their parents’ life experiences are quite useless. They choose their own path and don’t want to learn from the mistakes of the previous generations. Post-millennials prefer not to break the system but rather, perfect it. But the most important things to them are being able to adapt and develop creative skills.
They’re more free in their opinions.
Post-millennials are often blamed for being too individual. But it’s easy to understand why they’re like that. They don’t like standard behavior models since they can be ineffective, and freedom comes with individuality. The new generation likes the normcore style, like Kendall Jenner, and they’re calmer when it comes to dealing with racial problems.
Post-millennials are less likely to worry about their appearance or gender. A recent study showed that only 63% of European teenagers identify as heterosexual and every 5th person said that they were bisexual. In order words, the new generation doesn’t want to have any limitations to their sexuality. Perhaps in some countries, this trend isn’t as obvious but you can already notice it in big cities.
Gender neutrality is trendy among post-millennials. For example, Sting’s daughter, Eliot Sumner who is also a singer, is neutral. She doesn’t highlight her femininity, she only shows her art, not her gender.
Generation Z had to grow up in the so-called post-9/11 world, so they’re used to the atmosphere of uncertainty and variability. That’s why this generation is more realistic about the future. This is especially true when it comes to their career expectations. Headhunters say that 77% of young people realize that they will have to fight for their jobs very aggressively.
Also, Generation Z is more demanding toward corporations and brands. Young people need to get what they want faster without a lot of effort. This generation also values honesty, a realist attitude, and openness more than anything. They expect the same attitude from companies which is why they prefer commercials with regular people instead of celebrities.
They want to be natural and honest.
Generation Z doesn’t like the world of glamour and Photoshop. They value being natural and simplistic. Whatever you have from your childhood is far more important than the beauty you copied. That being said, women with perfect faces such as Irina Shayk and Angelina Jolie are of course beautiful, but they seem to represent ideals of the past. Plastic surgery can easily recreate this type of beauty with a perfectly crafted nose or plumped up lips.
Teenagers don’t try to modify themselves or look better than they really are. So people who have an unusual appearance or an unusual face are considered more trendy.
Many young people post themselves online without any makeup, in simple clothes, in front of unattractive buildings, in natural positions. Teenagers are simply tired of environments full of unnatural stuff, so many YouTube starts are regular people who’ve become experts in certain fields.
They want to make the world a better place.
Generation Z doesn’t just want to have material things, but they also want to make the world a better place. Many teenagers keep busy with volunteer work and social entrepreneurship. Recently, the entire world was introduced to 16-year-old Greta Thunberg who was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her contribution to the movement against global warming.
Adora Svitak became a public figure in the US at the age of 14. She works on the problem of education and literacy in children. She also writes books and earned $30,000 in sales which she used to help Vietnamese schools.
At the age of 13, Logan LaPlante has already given a TEDx Talk on modern education. Her video on YouTube has been watched more than 10 million times!
They grew up in a world where the Internet already existed.
Generation Z was born when the Internet already existed, so they can’t imagine their lives without it. More than 40% of teenagers say that they’re really attached to their devices and use their smartphones more often than they watch TV.
Many people use different devices and can learn a lot of information during the day. As a result, the speed of perception in young people has increased. Additionally, Generation Z has gotten used to multitasking, so they can easily switch from one task to another and concentrate on things while not becoming distracted.
They care about truly important things.
The people of Generation Z have more active social lives and are more worried about social problems. Teenagers are ready to fight for their rights in meetings. They’re interested in economic processes and how humanity can influence the environment.
A lot of them value personal space and don’t like sharing private information with everyone. That’s why they typically prefer Snapchat over Facebook.
Additionally, these post-millennials take good care of their health: they often cook food at home and try to maintain healthy habits.
They’re less interested in alcohol, drugs, and sex early on.
Generation Z is far less interested in alcohol, drugs or other substances. It seems that they just don’t need it because there are many more interesting and important tasks for them to focus on. Also, there are fewer cases of teenage pregnancy compared to the previous generation.
