10 “Harry Potter” Theories That Turn Our Favorite Story Upside Down

Harry Potter fans are lucky: J. K. Rowling didn’t just create a new universe, but she also left a lot of room for imagination. And sometimes she even confirms some unusual theories, and the story we all love develops even more interesting angles.

We at Bright Side decided to tell you about 10 theories that radically change the famous movie franchise.

1. Harry Potter is a distant relative of Godric Gryffindor.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the boy is accused of his possible relation to Salazar Slytherin due to his ability to communicate with snakes. But in reality, it might actually be very different. According to a fan theory, Harry Potter is not an heir of Slytherin but of Gryffindor. The theory is based on the fact that in the end, the boy beats the true heir of Slytherin — Tom Riddle, putting an end to the old conflict between the Hogwarts founders.

2. Mary Poppins also went to Hogwarts.

Mary Poppins may actually be a Hogwarts graduate that decided to return to the Muggle world after finishing school. In order not to give up on magic completely, she hid her wand in an umbrella, just like Hagrid did. And she also uses flying spells and wears a bag like Hermione’s in the final book.

3. Hagrid got Aragog from Newt Scamander.

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Aragog tells Harry Potter that he came from a far land in a pocket of a traveler. It’s also known that Newt Scamander returned to Hogwarts after traveling around 5 continents studying fantastic beasts. If this is true, we might actually see Newt giving Aragog to Hagrid in the next film.

4. Hagrid doesn’t have a lot of good memories.

In one of her interviews, J. K. Rowling admitted that Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts before he was able to learn the Patronus charm. Despite her words, fans think that there’s a sadder reason why Hagrid doesn’t have a Patronus — it’s because he doesn’t have enough good memories to cast one.

5. Trelawney was not a charlatan.

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Trelawney tells Harry Potter that his birthday is in midwinter. She was laughed at because everyone knew that the boy who lived was born in summer.

However, Tom Riddle’s birthday was December 31. Maybe she was able to see part of his soul in Harry Potter. If so, Dumbledore knew what he was doing when he hired her.

6. Hagrid couldn’t have children.

According to a fan theory, Rubeus Hagrid couldn’t have children. From the books, we know that Hagrid’s father was a wizard and his mother was a giant. Even though this marriage gave us the Hagrid that we love, he is still a hybrid that can’t have children.

7. Professor Lockhart was hired as a joke.

Hiring the narcissistic Professor Lockhart is probably one of the biggest mistakes Dumbledore made. However, fans found a way to explain why Dumbledore may have done this. According to their theory, Albus hired Gilderoy Lockhart in order to show the entire world the true face of the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. We know the result: right when he faced true danger, he showed his cowardice, and his career was destroyed.

8. Credence is Snape’s grandfather.

Poor Credence Barebone is a very interesting figure — fans thought that he was Voldemort’s father and even Snape’s grandfather. Snape was born to a family of a witch and a muggle. His mother, Eileen Prince, was born in the 1930s, and because the events described in Fantastic Beasts took place in 1926, Credence might be her father.

9. There’s a reason why wizards hide from muggles.

The question of why wizards have to hide from muggles is one of the biggest mysteries in the story. The power of wizards allows them to rule the entire world but, for some reason, they stay in the dark.

According to one of the theories, there was a time when wizards and muggles had a conflict, and wizards lost. At the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Ministry of Magic tells the PM that dragons are imported into the country. So muggles aren’t as simple as one might think.

10. Hermione might be Harry’s sister.

Harry and Hermione always had a good relationship, and they often acted like brother and sister. There’s a theory that says James and Lily actually had 2 kids: a boy and a girl. For some reason, the girl was adopted by the Grangers, who raised the girl like their child. If the theory is true, it’s clear why Harry and Hermione never even had a hint of romance between them.

In your opinion, which of these fan theories might turn out to be true?
