What Happened to Our Favorite Actor and Does He Have a Chance to Make a Comeback?

On January 21, we found out who the nominees were for the 2019 Golden Raspberry Awards. This is an awards ceremony that honors the worst the film industry has to offer. One of the leaders in the number of nominations is Johnny Depp. He was nominated for the Worst Actor award for Sherlock Gnomes, and for the Worst Screen Combo award. What is happening to you, Johnny?

Bright Side decided to study Johnny Depp’s career to try to find the breaking point and estimate his chances for a comeback.

1984 — The accidental start of his career

An alcoholic father, his parents’ divorce, rock-n-roll, and being expelled from school is just the short story of the childhood of the actor. By the way, back then, he thought he was going to become a musician in the future. But when he got married to Lori Anne Allison at the age of 20, he set out toward his destiny to become an actor. She introduced him to Nicholas Cage who sent him to an agent he knew. The agent sent Depp to an audition for A Nightmare on Elm Street and Johnny got the part. After that, he was offered the main part in 21 Jump Street. After this show, he woke up famous.

1990–2001 — Becoming a star

In the 90s, Johnny experienced the fast rise of his career and he didn’t make a single mistake. He only agreed to the best roles. He did Dead Man, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Chocolat, and Edward Scissorhands where he was a very strange character, which later becomes Depp’s thing.

Aside from his career, Hollywood couldn’t avoid discussing the personal life of such an attractive young man. Especially his relationships with Winona Ryder, Kate Moss, and Vanessa Paradis. Paradis and Depp had 2 beautiful children and moved to Paris.

2003 — A breakthrough

In 2003 a huge event happened, not only for Depp but for the entire cinema world: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl literally brought the genre of adventure movies back from the dead. And the character Jack Sparrow was so new that the actor was even nominated for an Oscar. And even though Sean Penn received the award that year, Depp didn’t need an Oscar to become one of the top actors in Hollywood.

2004–2012 — An extravagant image

When Johnny Depp found his niche character (Sparrow), he decided to not let it go. So we saw similar characters in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Rangers. Even in movies where he didn’t have a lot of makeup, he still clung to that really extravagant persona, like a comedian — which is hard to watch in a drama movie. But all the characters were really good and the movies earned a lot of money.

2012–2015 — Not a single good movie

Promising movies like The Tourist, The Rum Diary, and The Lone Ranger got really bad reviews. But as it turned out, these movies were actually okay compared to what the future had prepared for Depp.

In 2014, he broke up with Vanessa Paradis. In 2015, he got together with Amber Heard which wasn’t very good for his family image. And then something happened to his ability to choose good projects. So, he starred in Tusk, Into the Woods, Mortdecai, and Yoga Hosers. And as a result of a multitude of failed movies, he started drinking.

But the press still wrote good things about Depp: for example, about the time when he visited sick children dressed as Jack Sparrow.

2016 through today — The fall

Being nominated for the Golden Raspberry for Mortdecai, wasting half a billion dollars, a lawsuit against his own financial company, his mother’s death, the scandal with Amber Heard, divorce, and a lot of refusals from movie companies — this was 2016 for Johnny Depp.

After that, he had a chance to start over in Murder on the Orient Express but this movie ended up being pretty bad too.

As for what happened next, you can read the story in Rolling Stone magazine. The reporter who wrote this article had a 72-hour interview with a depressed, forgotten, and not entirely sober Depp and the entire world found out about his drug, alcohol, and financial problems. It seems that that was the moment when all the movie agents crossed out his name from their books.

In 2019, he was nominated for Golden Raspberry again and again.

What’s next?

But Johnny Depp doesn’t give up.

Richard Says Goodbye is a movie about a professor who was diagnosed with a terminal disease and wants to make his dreams come true before he dies. Yes, it’s reminiscent of many other movies with the same plot, but the actor did a really good job — he lost a lot of weight and a lot of people were seriously worried about his health. And the movie got good reviews.

Another decent movie he took part in was City of Lies. It’s not exactly the story that Depp’s fans expect from him, but it’s still a good movie.

So, the only movie that can ensure a good future for Johnny Depp is...

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
