29 years ago, Angela Bassett lost her Best Actress Oscar for playing Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It. This year, the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever actress is finally looking to take home the Best Supporting Actress award, and her husband believes she’s waited for the recognition long enough.

Angela Bassett has already won the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the Black Panther sequel. While this is a very good indication that she’s got the Oscar win on lock, it’s still likely that Jamie Lee Curtis will give Angela a run for her money with her nomination for the film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

While the Oscar campaign is about to reach its climax on March 12th, Bassett’s husband Courtney B. Vance has made up his mind that his talented wife will be taking home the coveted award. With Angela’s last Academy Award nomination being in 1994, Courtney is speaking up about her “overdue” win, saying that she’s waited too long for it.

The actor said in a recent interview: “It’s time and, I can’t wait for the moment when they call the first syllable of her name because that’s all any of us ever listened for.” For Courtney, if Angela doesn’t win, it will be a dealbreaker for him: “If you’ve been to these events, you know that the only thing you listen for is [making A phonetic sounds], or if it’s me [making K phonetic sounds]. If they don’t do [making A phonetic sounds], I’m out.”

Vance continued to hype his wife up: “I’m excited. It’s been 29 years, she’s overdue and I think everybody recognizes that. So I’m excited.”

Bassett is facing 4 other actresses in her run for Best Supporting Actress: Jamie Lee Curtis, Hong Chau, Kerry Condon, and Stephanie Hsu. So far, Curtis is posing the biggest competition since she took home the Screen Actors Guild award, while Bassett won the Critics’ Choice award, in addition to her Golden Globe.
