Identical Twins Reveal How They Beat Their Severe Acne With One Simple Diet Change
Nina and Randa Nelson, identical twins from California, know what it means to suffer from devastating acne. When the girls had a severe outbreak of pimples on their faces at the age of 20, no remedies could help them, and the only solution offered by doctors was to take drugs with severe side effects. The sisters didn’t give up, however, and a simple diet change they made worked wonders for their faces in just a few weeks.
Here at Bright Side, we’ve learned about diet changes that helped the girls cure their acne-ridden skin, and we can’t wait to share these tips with you!
1. The Nelson sisters know all about suffering from severe acne.
Nina and Randa Nelson, native Californians, have grown up vegan and have always been sticking to a pretty clean diet. In 2014, when the girls faced an acne outbreak on their faces, they didn’t know what to do. Nina and Randa are singers and actresses who are used to being in the public eye. They both confess that this skin problem made them so depressed that they stayed in their house for a month, not wanting to see anyone.
“It was the worst acne you could imagine. It just felt like this is what my life is going to be like for the rest of my life, and it’s absolutely hopeless,” said Randa.
Nina and Randa tried different remedies to get rid of the pimples on their skin, including all sorts of diets, facials and even antibiotics. The remedies that seemed to help the sisters would only have an effect for a month at most before the acne would return.
The dermatologists working with the girls gave up on their problem and said that the only way out was by taking Accutane, a powerful derivative of vitamin A that is used for curing severe acne. One of the sister’s friends that took Accutane suffered from terrible side effects including pains, hair loss and depression, which made the girls want to look for another option.
2. Discovering a simple solution that worked wonders for the twins’ faces
At one point Nina and Randa’s father suggested that there might be something the girls could do about their diet to cure their skin problem. The sisters studied the website of Dr. John McDougall whose diets help people fight heart diseases, diabetes, and other issues — it even once helped the girls’ mom. Browsing the website, Nina and Randa found out that even little amounts of soy and fats can cause severe acne if you are sensitive to these ingredients.
Cutting down on soy, fats, and oils meant eliminating many vegan products the girls were eating, including soy milk, hummus, peanut butter, nuts, and avocados. If your body turns out to be fat- sensitive, even small amounts of fats and oils (even vegetable oils) can cause outbreaks. The sisters followed this diet plan and it was definitely worth trying.
It’s hard to imagine, but the before and after pics you see above are just 5 weeks apart! “Within 3 days we had no new breakouts, it was just the matter of healing up the scars. It was a miracle. It was the first thing that actually worked,” said Randa. Nina and Randa admit, however, that healing also requires discipline: to get the result, you need to stick to the diet, no cheating is allowed.
3. Inspiring people all over the world to opt for a healthier diet
Nina and Randa Nelson set a good example to follow. Even when their doctors gave up on their problem and turned to pills, the sisters knew they didn’t have to take drugs to be healthy. They didn’t give up and found the solution that worked best for them. “After being so helpless and depressed and just wanting an answer, actually being able to just change your diet, something so simple, is the best feeling,” said the girls.
To help others fight acne and get back their confidence, Nina and Randa wrote the book, The Clear Skin Diet which has already made many people reconsider their diets. On their video blog, the sisters share a lot of easy vegan recipes (including desserts) that are not only healthy but tasty as well.
The story these girls shared with the world has shown others that healing is not always about drugs and hospitals, and sometimes there are simpler ways to cure the disease. “Anyone can cure their acne. I can honestly say, you can cure your acne, all you have to do is change your diet,” says Nina.
