Meet Lucy, a Blind and Autistic Girl Who Was Crowned the Winner of “The Piano”

Despite being a 13-year-old blind girl with severe autism, Lucy refuses to let her condition get in the way of her dreams. Every day, she demonstrates that there are no people with disabilities, only people with different abilities. Lucy possesses exceptional musical talent, and her latest performance was so moving that it brought the audience to tears. As a result, Lucy was crowned the winner of The Piano competition.

Lucy was diagnosed with cancerous tumors in both eyes.

For a long time, Lucy and her family were in a cancer bubble, which was horrendous for them. Lucy now doesn’t have any vision at all, and on top of that, she has a chromosome 16 duplication which can cause autism traits. She’s also globally developmentally delayed and struggles with communication.

A nurse recognized Lucy’s talent when she played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star while in the hospital.

Lucy started piano lessons, and when her teacher, Daniel, met her for the first time, he put her hand on a little keyboard, and she started playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. At that moment, Lucy’s teacher knew that music was very important to her and that it could help her unlock her social skills, language, and, most importantly, her enjoyment of life.

Wherever she is, whatever she hears, she’ll just pick it up and reproduce it herself.

Lucy learns to play different pieces by listening to her teacher play them first, and then she gives it a try and plays them by memory. Even though this is the way in which Lucy remembers music, her teacher still uses traditional techniques and works with her hands separately whenever she needs a bit of help.

Lucy is like a lot of other children with autism — self-directed.

When it comes to working with children like Lucy, having a good relationship with their parents and everyone involved in her development is a must, according to Daniel.

“You can’t teach Lucy, you can only help her learn. You can guide that journey. And her brain decides what it is she needs to learn next, and she will do it,” revealed Adam, the founder of The Amber Trust.

She was crowned the winner of The Piano at only 13 years old.

Lucy wowed the audience at the Royal Festival Hall during Channel 4’s series, The Piano, after a jaw-dropping performance. One of the judges said, “Magical things happen with music that are against all odds and all limitations.”

Lucy’s mom was also very proud of her daughter. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that neither of us will ever forget. It was literally life-changing. These kinds of events don’t usually happen in our lives,” she revealed.

The crowd at the station was left awestruck by Lucy’s mesmerizing performance, and people online said they were moved to tears after watching the clip.

Lucy’s talent and determination inspire us all to see beyond disabilities and recognize the unique abilities that each of us possesses. As she continues to pursue her passion for music, we can only imagine the incredible things she will achieve in the years to come.
