Pink Honors Her Late Father on Her New Album, and It’s Hard to Hold Back Tears

year ago

With a career that’s spanned over 2 decades, Pink released her ninth studio album, Trustfall, in February 2023. The record starts with a touching track, a tribute to her dad, Jim Moore, who passed away in 2021. And in an interview, the singer decided to get candid about her grief and how her father continues to inspire her.

The song was released on Valentine’s Day.

The American singer chose a day devoted to celebrating love to reveal to her fans the song she dedicated to her father, called When I Get There. On Instagram, Pink shared a clip of the lyric video, which features a voiceover from her dad and old family videos, along with a moving caption: “Sometimes love leaves us too soon. On Valentine’s Day, I cherish the love I have that I can touch and the love I have in my heart for those who have gone on to the next adventure. This one’s for you, Daddy Sir,” she wrote.

Pink, whose birth name is Alecia Moore, has since admitted that she didn’t write the single herself because she still isn’t emotionally ready to process her father’s passing that way.

“They sent me that song after he passed, and I felt like it was a gift. I wouldn’t be able to write that song yet. I haven’t unpacked that suitcase yet. I don’t think I will for a while,” Moore said. “But it’s such a simple, beautiful song, and I love the idea that he might be somewhere nice.”

The singer opened up about her grieving process.

Pink has been grieving her father since August 2021, when he passed away due to cancer. Before then, the 43-year-old talked about how similar they were.

“I definitely have his blood in my veins. [...] I got my rebellious spirit from him,” she said in 2006. The singer also often referred to him as one of her biggest supporters, saying in 2007, “He was my first rock star.”

In an interview with People magazine, she was honest about the loneliness that comes with grief. “When a daughter loses her father, your first thought is, ’No one’s ever going to love me like that again,’ and it’s a very lonely feeling,” Pink admitted. “I wish I could talk to him sometimes and ask him more questions.”

Even so, the tough experience has helped the singer find her priorities and live according to them. “When a parent passes away, it’s like this suitcase you’re going to be unpacking the rest of your life, which also makes you think about well, who am I, and who do I want to be, and what’s keeping me from that? And then, what are my priorities?” she explained in a different interview. “My priorities are to live an authentic human experience and be completely transparent about it and to love and cuddle with my kids as long as they’ll let me.”
