10 Years of Grease Gone From an Oven Window in 20 Minutes: 12 Things People Finally Deep Cleaned

Every November before my mom visits, I clean the glass on my oven door, because the first thing she does is look inside to see if anyone lives there. Last year it took two evenings, and I found a crumb between the panes that I am fairly sure dates back to a pie from 2023. These 12 people finally gave a deep clean to what they had avoided for years, and told us exactly how.

An Old Rental Oven the Previous Renters Never Cleaned, Brought Back With Baking Soda and Vinegar

“Before and after cleaning an old oven. Pretty sure the previous renters never cleaned it.”

We put a layer of baking soda mixed with water along the whole thing. Let it sit for a couple of hours. Then sprayed with vinegar and wiped.

It did take lots of scrubbing. But the vinegar and baking soda really helped clean up a lot of the top layer.

Also after the fact: My advice is to wear gloves. I didn’t and my hands are raw now.

Bathroom Fixtures Lost Their Hard Water Stains to Dry Steel Wool in 3 Minutes

“SOLVED: Hard water stains removed from fixtures!”

I tried so many recommended solutions to remove hard water stains from my fixtures and the ONLY thing that finally worked was 0000 steel wool. Attached before and after pics.

The steel wool part was so easy. I just took it out of the package and used it dry. I started gently rubbing it on the metal and immediately the residue started coming off. I did circular polishing motion across the fixture and it was done in about 3 minutes. That was literally it!

I scrubbed really gently. I am first and foremost a lazy woman. Literally my arms get tired French braiding my hair lmao. It took very little effort.

Painted-Over Door Hardware in an Old House, Restored in a Thrift Store Crockpot

This place is still a rental, but with the time between tenants I like to restore the original hardware. Reassembling cleaned-up mortise locks is always a fun puzzle!

Get yourself a thrift store crockpot, toss in your parts with some water (and dish detergent, allegedly), and let ‘em stew for several hours on warm. At the very least you’ll get latex paint to come off pretty easily, anything else will loosen and eventually clean up with wire brushes and picks.

Never use this thing for food again

I can’t remember why I even started doing this but once you do it’s addictive.

From the author:

The crumb was in the bottom corner between the panes, where no sponge has ever been. I spent the second evening on the kitchen floor with a flashlight and a bent coat hanger. When I told my mom, she asked what kind of pie it was. I honestly couldn’t say.

An Oven Window Nobody Could See Through for a Decade, Clear After 20 Minutes

“Me and my oven window thank you.”

Finally looked at that oven window and set enough. It’s been like this for a decade. I whipped up the three parts baking soda to one part water mixture, spread it on the window, and then easily scrub to clean 20 minutes later with a metal scrubby. How in the world did I not know it was that easy? I can now see in my oven!

Marks on Everyday Bowls That Turned Out Not to Be Scratches at All

“I always thought these were scratches on my bowls and couldn’t be removed”

I was looking for info on another cleaning project and found a reddit post about being able to remove marks on ceramic dishes from utensil use. HOLY COW what a difference!

I used the soft cleanser, so I poured a little on and immediately scrubbed a small area with a paper towel to see if it would even work. When it did, I put on cleaning gloves and switched to the scrubby side of a regular kitchen sponge.

One Side of a Pan Scrubbed After Many Years, in About 90 Minutes

“I scrubbed one side of a pan I’ve had for many years.”

A variety of brushes. Scour pads cut the best, but are hard on the fingers.

About 90 minutes

Silver Spoons Over 100 Years Old, Polished in Front of the TV

“I polished my silver spoons today”

I kind of like the contrast. They are over 100 years old and they look so shiny that the less shiny parts remind me of their age.

Not since I’ve had them and prob since my mother has had them. They were her grandmothers

Silver polish with a rag. It was so easy to use.

Just a couple of minutes per spoon. I did it while sitting and watching tv.

From the author:
My mom’s inspection takes about four seconds. She opens the oven, leans in, closes it and says, “Well.” I have never found out what “well” means. Going through these twelve, I noticed nobody bought anything fancy: baking soda, a sponge, a crockpot from a thrift store. Mostly they just picked a day and started.

Well Over 10 Years of Grime on a Rental Oven Door, Taken Off With a Wet Pumice Stone

“Saw a comment about cleaning the oven with pumice stone recently. Well over 10 years of crap finally being cleaned off!”

The oven looked this bad when I moved in. The oven’s been the one thing I’ve been too nervous to tackle, as I have pets sensitive to cleaning fumes. Just doing half the door has eaten through 2 pumice stone sticks, and took 4 hours total.

Just a wet pumice stone! I’m sure it would have been much faster if I’d used some kind of cleaning product alongside it, but I’m happy to spend the extra time and not have to worry about any danger to my pets.

Kitchen Cabinets Under a Deep Crust of Old Grime, Cleaned With Soap and Fine Steel Wool

I have finally gotten rid of the deep crust of dirt that started covering my kitchen cabinets.

We ended up using soap and some #00 steel wool we had at home. We poured a bit of soap on the grime, let it work its magic, and used the steel wool.

We finished it off with some lemon oil and also cleaned up the brass handles as best as we could.

A Back Door Put Off for 3 or 4 Years, Done in Half an Hour

“Today was finally the day”

I’ve been saying I would clean my back door for at least 3 or 4 years.

Just a kitchen sponge and the regular all purpose spray I had on hand. And water and elbow grease haha

This door took maybe half an hour

I finally noticed at the right moment when I was free and had JUST been thinking, “girl you need to do something productive today” (I’m a teacher on summer break and have been in hardcore couch potato mode this hot rainy week).

Shower Door Glass After Nearly 10 Years of Hard Water, Cleared in 3 Hours

“Shower door glass conquered! Thought I’d never see it clear again .”

I’m rather embarrassed to admit it but after nearly 10 years of living with the calcium and hard water build up and water stains I finally committed to putting in full effort to get it restored as best as I can.

To start with, I spent 3 hrs of scraping, scrubbing wipe rinse and repeat but that’s what it took was pure hands on cleaning effort.

What I used was:

Equal parts distilled white vinegar and water
0000 steel wool
2 inch wide razor blade and extra blades
Micro fiber cloth to final dry
A ton of energy and effort

A Great-Grandfather’s Brass Razor From the Early 1900s, Polished Back to Gold

“Been using my great grandfather’s razor for a while now. Decided to clean and polish it this morning. Before/After”

This is a vintage safety razor, probably from somewhere between 1903-1921. It was my great grandfather’s. It’s solid brass, except for the handle, which is a hollow tube.

I spent about 30-45 minutes polishing this razor. I used an old toothbrush for the hard to reach places.

The razor in the last story is more than a hundred years old, and half an hour with a polish and an old toothbrush put it back into daily use. Cleaning an old thing is often how you decide to keep it.
