10 School Moments That Remind Us Kindness and Mercy Still Bring Hope to Every Classroom

My neighbor crocheted a little pumpkin doll for my daughter. It was SO sweet (seriously, the tiny stem and the little leaf got me) that we put it on the shelf facing her bed. Last night, while I was putting her to sleep, I noticed tiny red lights glowing in its eyes. My heart dropped. I just froze for a second, then grabbed it, and my legs went weak when I figured out what they were: tiny digital LED eyes, programmed to light up and change expressions when they detect movement. Like... how crazy is that?? I went from terrified to impressed in about five seconds. Honestly it kind of inspired me to start crocheting myself lol. And then my daughter whispered, “Make it look at me again.” I won’t lie, I got chills. But I switched it back on, and the pumpkin smiled. I didn’t sleep much last night.
Last fall my best friend was going through a rough breakup and skipped every Halloween party, which isn’t like her at all. She usually plans our group costumes months ahead. So I spent two evenings crocheting her a tiny black cat with an orange witch hat. The hat took three tries because the brim kept curling. I left it on her doorstep with a note: “You’re not alone this spooky season.” An hour later she texted me a crying selfie holding it. A year later she’s doing great, and that little cat still sits on her desk at work. Making gifts like that is when this hobby feels most like compassion.
My fall tradition now is a “yarn night” with friends. Hot cider, a pile of orange and black yarn, and everyone works on something different. Half of us knit, half crochet, and somebody always ends up teaching somebody else. It’s pure happiness and costs almost nothing.
As the fall leaves settle and Halloween fades, I’m reminded that every crochet stitch carries a little piece of my heart. Whether you love knitting or are just starting a new hobby, let your creativity lead the way and turn simple yarn into gifts of happiness and compassion for those you love.
