10 Times a Stranger’s Kindness and Compassion Meant More Than Words Ever Could

At every wedding I shot, the couples married 40 or 50 years wrote the shortest notes in the advice book. The best one I ever photographed had two words in shaky blue ink: “Same team.” These 11 Hollywood couples have been together for decades, from a $179 Las Vegas wedding to a blind date that started with a comment about a haircut.
One evening, Michael Caine saw a woman in a TV ad for coffee. He later recalled: “A commercial came on for coffee, and this girl was in it with these maracas. And I fell in love with this girl instantly, absolutely instantly.”
He was ready to fly to Brazil to find her, until a friend told him she lived in London. Her name was Shakira Baksh. “I called every night for two weeks, and she wouldn’t go out with me,” Caine said. They married in January 1973 and have a daughter, Natasha.
Billy Crystal went to Marshall University in West Virginia on a baseball scholarship. He never came back for his second year: he stayed in New York to be close to Janice, his high school sweetheart. They married on June 4, 1970, and have two daughters and grandchildren.
In 2018, he told Us Weekly the secret was simple: “We laugh a lot. We’ve grown together, we’ve parented together, we’ve grandparented together. I’m lucky that I found the person when I was 18.”
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos met on the set of the soap All My Children, where he was cast as her on-screen love interest. In May 1996, they eloped to Las Vegas, and the ceremony cost $179.
Thirty years later, Ripa still has one regret, which she shared on their show in June: “I’m still sorry that we didn’t spring for flowers because I always think my hands look awkward.” Today the two host ‘Live With Kelly and Mark’ together, and their production company, Milojo, is named after their three kids, Michael, Lola, and Joaquin.
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick married on September 4, 1988. Kyra once summed up how it started: “It was 1987- on the set of Lemon Sky — I met a man named Kevin.” For their 35th anniversary in 2023, Kevin wrote on Instagram, “35 years feels like a heartbeat.”
Asked for their secret, Kyra told E! News, “Don’t take advice about how to keep a marriage going from a celebrity. That’s the secret.” In 2025, they starred together in the film The Best You Can. Ten years earlier, Kevin had posted this throwback:
“#TBT to 1989 @sundancefest with @kyrasedgwick”
Barbra Streisand and James Brolin were set up on a blind date in 1996. She told W magazine in 2016: “I met him at a dinner and expected a bearded mountain-man type, and he had cut off all his hair and was clean-shaven. I asked him, ‘Who screwed up your hair?’ He later told me that’s when he fell in love with me.”
They married two years later, on July 1, 1998. In 2025, Brolin shared his own secret: “The best investment we’ve ever made is our mattress. And don’t misunderstand me. We’re both lazy. We love to sleep late.”
In 1983, Tom Selleck was filming a movie in London and kept going back to Cats in the West End. He saw it eight and a half times. Jillie Mack was in the cast, playing Rumpleteazer, and Selleck later called her “the personification of joie de vivre.”
They married on August 7, 1987, at a chapel near Lake Tahoe. To keep it secret, the minister was told to expect a “Tom Jenkins” and a “Suzie Mark.” Their daughter, Hannah, grew up on the family ranch in California and became an equestrian.
Bryan Cranston and Robin Dearden met as guest stars on an episode of Airwolf. He played the villain, and his character held hers hostage. They married on July 8, 1989.
Cranston proposed in a bubble bath, with the ring on his pinky toe. He lifted his leg and said, “Here’s your ring, but I can’t reach it. Take the ring off my toe.” Their daughter, Taylor, is an actor too. In 2023, Cranston told British GQ he planned to pause his career in 2026 to spend that time with Robin: “She deserves it.”
Mark Harmon met Pam Dawber, the star of Mork & Mindy, at a friend’s party in 1986. That same year, Harmon told People what he wanted from marriage: “When I marry, I want it to be everything this town says it can’t be.” They married in 1987 and have two sons.
In 2019, he said, “I’m proud to be married, and I’m proud of who I’m married to.” Years later, Dawber joined him on NCIS for four episodes as journalist Marcie Warren, the first time the couple appeared together on the show.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick met through Naked Angels, a New York theater company where he directed a play in 1991 and became friends with her brothers. On May 19, 1997, they invited about 100 friends to a party that turned out to be their wedding. Parker wore a black dress.
In 2018, she said of her husband: “He annoys me sometimes, but I’m enormously proud of the person he is.” They have three children and starred together on Broadway in Plaza Suite in 2022.
Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have three daughters, toured together on their Soul2Soul tours, and even played husband and wife in the 2021 series 1883.
On October 6, 2026, their 30th anniversary, McGraw remembered their wedding day on Instagram: “That day, October 6, 1996, under an old locust tree(I think) in my Aunt’s backyard in Rayville, Louisiana, I stood there and watched my future walk towards me.”
Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen married on October 7, 1995. In 2007, they co-founded Angels at Risk, a nonprofit for kids and families at risk of drug and alcohol abuse. In 2025, the Television Academy gave them its Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, the first time it went to a couple.
That same year, Danson described their mornings: “Coffee in bed, playing Wordle, Connections, and Spelling Bee, talking and laughing and sharing. To both of us, it’s like heaven on Earth.”
Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen start their days with coffee and word games, and the TV Academy honored them for the work they do together. That’s the “Same team” card from that advice book, 31 years in. The couples who stayed for the last slow song at the weddings I shot had the same thing: they kept showing up for each other.
