11 Happy People Whose Family Wisdom Came From a Mother’s Sacrifice, a Father’s Retirement, and a Stranger’s Real Act of Kindness

My mom has let me do her makeup exactly once, for my oldest sister’s wedding. She sat on the edge of the bathtub with her mother’s silver compact in her lap and asked for “nothing that looks like effort,” which in our family means mascara and a little blush. These 12 moms and grandmas let their kids do their makeup, and the before-and-after photos show what they saw in the mirror.
“Before and after of me doing my moms makeup!”
I had to be a little creative with most of my things because my mom is a lot darker than me.
I color corrected with a peachy concealer to remove the darkness around her mouth and eyes!
She was shocked when she saw her self. She never wears makeup so it was a big change.
She was really happy to see her dark circles go away!
I did my grandmother’s makeup, I know it’s a bit extra but I wanted to try doing makeup on someone older for the first time! I am not a makeup artist or pro so it’s not the best
My grandmother is turning 72 this year :)
It’s just extra to us because she usually wears very little makeup- she said she thought she looked like a drag queen...I told her that isn’t exactly what drag queens look like
She is beautiful with and without I love her so much
“Before and after makeup for my beautiful mom (Kinda Brigitte Bardot/Retro?)”
She’s always been supportive, since I was really young and really bad at it and she let me do her makeup even though I wasn’t good at it haha.
She usually only puts on a bit of brown pencil on her eyes and mascara, nothing else.. but she likes it a lot when I try stuff on her. I started doing my mom’s makeup by doing it for events like parties or weddings and stuff, now we do it for fun and for me to practice :D
I struggled a lot with the wings:( because she has some wrinkles around that area and it was really hard to do a straight line..
Maybe liner wings are meant to be sisters not twins either :D
She asked when I took pictures of her if I’ll put them “on that website” (she doesn’t know the name)
From the author:
In our house, the practice face was always me. I’m the youngest of four, so I spent a lot of Saturdays on the closed toilet lid while three sisters argued over my eyebrows. Mom would walk past, see my blue eyelids and say “very brave” without stopping. Nobody practiced on her. We didn’t even ask.
“My 55 year old mom just decided she wants to start wearing makeup. I had so much fun getting to buy all this stuff for her!”
“Makeover with my mom (who has never used any makeup/skincare) was a SMASHING success!”
She’s going to keep it up, I think! She took extensive notes throughout the process and even labeled each product with a number to remember the order of application. It was adorable.
She is so happy, though a little embarrassed at the “before” picture.
My (always tactful) dad’s response: “Wow, this makes me want to look at you more”
“I got my mom some makeup for her birthday and finally got the chance to put it on her and show her how to use everything!”
She’s mentioned a few times in passing that she should get some makeup, so I got her a “getting started” kit. :)
She looks so much happier in the second picture. This was right after the “reveal.” I wouldn’t let her see the makeup until after I was done. :)
I’m hoping this will help improve her confidence a bit. She’s such a beautiful person inside, she deserves to feel that way on the outside, too!
My mom said that she’s going to try to get into the routine of putting on a little makeup everyday. It’s crazy how much a little bit can boost your confidence.
What makeup artists suggest after 60: Makeup artists who work with older clients keep repeating the same few rules. Elise Marquam-Jahns, a makeup artist over 60, puts powder only where it’s needed, since too much starts to look cakey, and suggests mixing cream blush with a little moisturizer for dry skin. Grazia’s beauty team adds three more: blush high on the cheekbones, swept toward the temples; a brow pencil one shade lighter than the natural color; and a balm before a satin lipstick instead of a matte one.
“Full glam on my grandma”
“Did my 60 year old grandmas makeup. It was so much fun. It’s such a therapeutic and bonding time.”
I was worried I would make her wrinkles more visible but I was happy with the outcome.
Looking at this pic makes me smile every time. Makeup is so powerful and amazing.
From the author:
Mom’s wedding-day makeup took eleven minutes, and she checked the clock twice. When I was done, she skipped the big bathroom mirror and opened her mother’s compact instead. She looked for a long time, clicked it shut and said, “I look like me, only awake.” She hasn’t let me near her face since. That’s the photo from that day she framed for the hallway.
“I turned my Mom into a deer for a themed run we did together — makeup stayed on perfectly through sweat and damp weather!”
It was called the Midsummer Night’s Run, you could dress up as a character from a Shakespeare play or just magical creatures.
I paper mached the antlers, and glued them onto a headband with fake flowers :)
“Makeup Transformation on my Mom!”
“I did my mum’s makeup for her — Before and After :)”
My mum will be 48 this year :)
I was trying to get her to smile normally and she whipped out that face hahah
Monica Ravi-Conway usually never does makeup on other people, especially on more mature skin, so this one was going to be a challenge. The mother-in-law had a short list: makeup that lasts all day and bright full coverage under the eyes, and she doesn’t use foundation.
“First time im doing makeup on my mother in law who has mature skin”
“Power of Brows! On my grandma!”
The left side is me doing her brows, right is her normal brows after she does them. I gave her a lesson! She wanted a natural looking brow
I think she had aged extremely well! Almost 80!
I’m thinking about doing another face makeup lesson for her, but whole face. For those of you who have moms, aunts, grandmas I would really suggest it! And it was a great bonding experience, And I got to talk about makeup!
GLAM’MA
Brows wash off by bedtime, and so does the rest of it. What stays is the half hour in the chair and whatever she says when she finally looks in the mirror. In my family, that’s “I look like me, only awake.”
Have you ever done your mom’s or grandma’s makeup, and what did she say when she saw the mirror? Tell us in the comments.
