12 Pet Owners Who Made Their Dogs and Cats Feel Special With Knitted Sweaters, Crocheted Beds, and Handmade Blankets

Pets notice kindness. In an fMRI study of canine brains, researchers scanned 12 dogs and found that the scent of a family member activated the reward center more than any other scent tested, even when that person wasn’t present. Dogs seem to hold on to the familiar smell of their people. Maybe that’s part of what makes a handmade blanket so special: it carries a little of the person who made it.

These stories show how pet owners put that care into practice, using knitting, crochet, and yarn to make everything from a cozy sweater for a Chihuahua to a blanket for a Labrador Retriever or a crocheted bed for a cat. Each handicraft starts with patience and a simple hobby, but can become something pets love. That kind of kindness brings a little extra happiness to the animals who receive it — and to the people who make it.

1. “All done and Labrador approved.”

“Pattern is Espiritu Del Sol by Hooked on Sunshine.”

2. “My 16-year-old Chihuahua rocking her Halloween sweater I made.”

“Yarn was patons wool. Pattern was a basic sweater from ‘stylishly knits for dogs by Ilene Hochberg’ and I made the jolly roger design.”

3. Her hands remembered a kindness her mind couldn’t.

  • Mom’s crochet hook never stopped, even after her memory issues started. She was 74 and lived with me in a small house outside Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. 40 dog beds, one 6Y.O. Labrador Retriever named Max. “Mom, the garage is full. Please stop!” I snapped once. She only smiled.
Early one Sunday morning, our doorbell rang. It was a man I’d never met, wearing a soaked jacket and muddy boots. He looked at my mom over my shoulder and said, “Ma’am, last night’s flood ruined all our bedding, and 38 dogs are shivering. Someone said you might have beds.”
It turned out he was a shelter director. Mom had volunteered at that shelter for 17 years before her diagnosis, and her hands remembered what her mind couldn’t. Her crochet hobby had always been more than a pastime; this little handicraft was her way of caring for pets that needed a warm place to sleep.
We drove all 40 beds over, including a couple of spares, and the dogs piled onto them. Mom got every dog’s name wrong, and nobody corrected her. The shelter director thanked her for her kindness, and when I saw the dogs settling into their beds, I finally understood how much happiness her simple hobby could bring to others.

4. “Made a blanket of my dog, for my dog.”

  • Now this is the content that I’m here for!! She’s glorious 😭 And your blanket is absolutely perfect 🌟10/10 would snugg this pup. © hadrosaurface / Reddit

5. “Finally finished my cat bed!!”

“Crocheted the panels (patterns from the granny square sourcebook) with my scrap(ish) yarn and sewed everything to muslin so that I could stuff it. Sewing pattern is my own!”

  • Whoah, that’s beautiful! I didn’t even realize it was crochet at first lol. © No-Elevator-2682 / Reddit
  • I really appreciate how beautiful you made each square and the way you colour matched everything. So many people are funny about using great yarn or beautiful patterns for pets, which is such a weird mindset. They are totally worth the effort, gorgeous yarn and lovely patterns!
I made a blanket for our dog using woven and crochet squares, with some hand dyed yarn from a few popular yarn dyers (including Miss Babs), which would have cost at least $400/$500 worth of yarn. Totally worth it, even tho the blanket ended up loved to pieces. © belltrina / Reddit

6. A piece of handicraft held a gift worth more than it looked.

  • My sister, 30, gave me a crocheted dog bed for my 5-year-old Labrador Retriever, Benny, as a wedding gift. She’d spent weeks making it by hand, using thick brown and cream yarn and stuffing it with soft padding.
At our wedding dinner, my MIL scoffed, “Why couldn’t she just save up some money? Like normal people do.” I smiled awkwardly, even though her comment embarrassed me.
At home that evening, Benny curled up in the new bed while I squeezed the padding to make it more comfortable. That’s when I felt something hard hidden inside the lining. I checked the seam and found a small pocket filled with folded hundred-dollar bills, carefully tucked away and stitched into place.
My sister had saved for a year because she knew I’d never accept cash directly from her. A little handwritten note was folded in with the money. It read, “Honeymoon fund. Don’t argue with the bed.” The amount was enough to cover our flights and several nights in Portugal, so we finally booked the trip we’d been putting off while paying for the wedding.
We went to Portugal and Benny still sleeps in that bed. Every time I see him curled up in it, I think about my sister’s kindness and the love stitched into every inch of her handicraft. Her crochet hobby had given us a gift that brought happiness to our little family, pets included, in more ways than one.

7. “FINALLY completed the bed I spent about 3 weeks making for my dog, Kodak.”

“The design for this bed is entirely my own. He is a big fan of his new bed!”

8. “First time knitting, Gus has claimed the dog bed.”

“I’m knitting with a club, and we’re donating dog bed this month. I wanted to have Gus test it before I wash it.”

9. “Crocheted a pouffe, cat has claimed it as his bed.”

“For those curious, I used this pattern, along with the recommended hook, yarn (but in autumn colour), etc.

It was also my very first big project and I absolutely loved making it 😄”

  • The next blanket I make will likely be for my dog. She is always getting on my projects and is always so sad when I fuss at her and make her move. © rainbowbritexx / Reddit
  • Oh, she’d be delighted with the blanket that you made for her! It’s lovely that she is such a fan of the crochet projects you create 😄 © Sofaroar / Reddit

10. “I finished my chihuahua’s hoodie!”

  • Oh my god, I know what I’m making my puppy niece who is a chihuahua for Christmas!! (I’d make it for my chihuahua mix but he hates clothes). © Reddit

11. What her sister laughed at was really a hobby passed down with love.

  • My grandpa passed away at 82 and left all his money to my twin sister. All I got was his 14-year-old deaf and blind Chihuahua, Chico, and its crocheted bed. My sister laughed when she saw it. “Have fun with this monstrosity!” she said. I took Chico and the bed back to my little apartment in Fort Wayne, Indiana, feeling hurt but unwilling to leave the old dog behind.
A week later, I noticed something sticking out of the dog bed. I knelt down and gasped — there was a tiny, folded note tucked into a small pocket. It was written in Grandpa’s shaky handwriting: “I couldn’t leave you much, but I wanted you to have something of mine that no one else could take away.”
Inside the pocket was a little notebook filled with crochet patterns and handwritten instructions. Some pages had crossed-out rows and little sketches showing how to shape the edges of a dog bed. On the first page, Grandpa had written, “I learned this for you. It took me months, but if I can do it, so can you.” The last page was blank, with my name written at the top.
I sat down with some yarn that evening and tried my first pattern. My stitches were uneven, and I had to undo them twice. I spent nearly two hours working on a small square before I finally got the hang of it. Through it all, Chico slept beside my knees, curled up on an old fleece blanket.
Grandpa had turned his knitting and crochet hobby into a handicraft he could pass down to me, and I finally understood the kindness behind his gift. He’d spent months learning something new just so he could leave me more than a dog bed.
I’ve always loved pets, but that night, I discovered a new passion of my own. For the first time since Grandpa passed away, I felt a little happiness again. I opened the notebook to the last page, picked up my pencil, and began writing down the instructions for the first pattern I’d created myself.

12. “Real version of crochet lab (Winnie).”

  • Great dog, great blanket! Is that all velvet yarn? I always have trouble with velvet. © loserfaaace / Reddit
  • Yes it is all velvet! Needed a velvet blanket for a velvet dog (she still has her puppy fur on her head). I didn’t find it too bad to work with but I was only doing a single crochet. © ameowa / Reddit

Have you ever used your knitting or crochet hobby and a ball of yarn to bring happiness to your dogs and other furry pets? Show us your creations! 🐾

Pets can’t read a card, but they can smell who made their gift. Maybe that’s why these stories feel so special: a knitting project became a Chihuahua’s favorite sweater, a crochet bed was claimed by a cat in minutes, and a Labrador Retriever refuses to share its blanket.
Each project turned a simple hobby into a handicraft filled with kindness, with every row of yarn made with care. Dogs of all sizes seem to appreciate that personal touch. What’s the most thoughtful thing you’ve ever made for your pets, and who got the most happiness out of it?
