12 Senior Dogs and Cats From an Animal Shelter: a Cat Who Waited 7 Years and a Shepherd Who Got Younger

My grandmother says a stray who comes to the porch three days in a row has chosen us, and she never asks its age. The gray tabby she called the foreman already had a white chin the summer he chose her. These 12 senior dogs and cats came home from an animal shelter, most at 10 or older, and the photos show day one next to now.

A 12-Year-Old Dog Who Was Still Wary on Day Two, and 8 Months Later Falls Asleep Staring at His Person

“Rescued two senior dogs a couple days ago and they are very wary of me. Woke up this morning to this sweet guy curled up next to me.”

He’s 12 and definitely is ready to settle down somewhere comfy. I’m just glad I got the opportunity.

In this photo he is in his own bed. He tested the waters in my bed for a minute but decided he wanted to sleep on his own last night. At the moment he is curled up by my feet right next to his buddy. They got a long (for old men) walk today to get to know the surroundings, followed by a big hearty dinner, so they are tuckered out.

“Ever since rescuing Blue (13) 8 months ago, he always has to fall asleep staring right at me.”

A Dog Whose Face Turned Gray During 7 Years at the Shelter, and the First Soft Bed She Ever Had

Pirate spent seven years at the shelter, and her biggest obstacle was her age: no one had tried to adopt her before. The night she came home, her new family went out and bought her her first soft bed and a toy. Now she runs to the door and wags her tail every time they come home.

“This dog’s face turned white while she spent half her life waiting at the shelter — look how HAPPY she is now!”

A Senior Shepherd Who Hung His Head on Walks, and 9 Months Later Seemed 3 Years Younger

“This is Jake. We adopted him in January and he is a senior. All it took was some love (and many belly rubs) and I’m happy to say he’s finally living the life he always deserved.”

It was heartbreaking when he came to us, he would just lay around and whine and cry and he was constantly looking for someone. Even when we would go on walks, he would hang his head low and hunch his back and his ears would flop. Now it’s like he’s lived with us his whole life. He’s so happy every day that we sometimes forget how old he really is.

Since January, so almost 9 months now. 9 months of care have shaved off at least 3 years of age. :)

The shelter originally told us he was 10 and we just kind of went with it. When we first got him we started feeling like he was probably closer to 12, nowadays we think he’s 8 or 9. Of course, we’ll never know his exact age.

From the author:

At the shelter where I volunteered in high school, the old dogs never rushed the kennel door. They watched from the back, as if deciding whether you were worth getting up for. I used to sit on the floor with my back to the bars and read. By the third afternoon, one gray shepherd mix would come over and lean on the other side.

A Cat Who Waited 7 Years in a Shelter Cage While Everyone Picked the Kittens

“I adopted a 10yo that had been at the shelter for 7 years. Took him a few days, but now I cannot move. This is Kevin Solo”

They had piles and piles of kittens. He just needed me

Nobody wanted him. He was surrendered at 3yo and he’s not very fancy looking. No unique markings. He has zero behavior issues that I’ve seen. My hand is very chewed on however, but I like it lol He never stops being goofy and playing.

He’s so happy to be out of the cage, he’ll play with a bottle cap for hours straight

His personality is Huge. My dog falls all over herself to play with him, and he is so tenacious!! It’s fantastic to watch him open up. He’s an absolute nut. I slingshot hair ties at him randomly and he hasn’t failed to catch one yet

A 19-Year-Old Shelter Dog Who Still Pranced Like a Puppy Until He Got a Family

“Ace was 19 when he was surrendered to a shelter — but he still pranced around like a puppy! When this woman saw him, she knew she needed to foster him and find him the perfect family. Watch him finally get adopted at age 19.”

A ‘Ratty Old Lady’ Cat Who Became a Floofy Princess With Kitten Zoomies

“Adopted a ratty old lady and now she’s our floofy princess.”

We knew she was older, the shelter put her at about 10. But when we picked her up, she was THE sweetest thing. She just purred and made biscuits on her new soft bed in her carrier the entire way home.

She weighs about 8 pounds now, which is about a pound too fluffy, she drools when she’s happy which is always, she plays like a kitten and has completely unhinged zoomies at the drop of a hat, she trills and chatters with us constantly, and loves to lay on a mouse or keyboard for attention if you’re busy. She’s perfection. We absolutely adore her.

She’s about 10, give or take, but she acts like a 6 month old kitten most of the time.

We actually named her Clover since she’s our little Lady Luck

A 17-Year-Old Black Cat on Adoption Day and Now

“My 17 year old senior kitty the day we adopted her vs now”

We love her.

From the author:
My grandmother never knew how old the foreman was, and she never tried to guess. She says a cat tells you his age by what he still bothers to do. The foreman walked her to the end of the garden every morning and inspected the tomatoes. By her math, that made him about four.

An Old Dog With a Sad Face Who Now Spends Her Golden Years on Peanut Butter

“One look at that sad face and I knew we had to save her. Old lady Madge is spending her golden years spoiled rotten eating lots of peanut butter (with no teeth!)”

We have no idea what her life was like before but she’s the sweetest dog I’ve ever met and gets plenty of love now.

Sweet Pea, funny enough, that’s the name animal control gave her when they picked her up! Then the rescue named her Madge, which we kept.

The dream is to have a dozen seniors one day

A Senior Dog Who Had Been Surrendered Twice and Now Sleeps Under the Covers With His Favorite Person

Bruno had already been surrendered twice when Amber wandered into a dog adoption event without planning to bring anyone home. Now the whole family takes him on walks every day.

“He snuggles up under the covers every night with his favorite person”

A 9-Year-Old Shelter Dog Who Learned to Use Those Eyes to Get Treats

“Approx. 9 year old doggo before in shelter and 1 year after on a walk”

He just needed the opportunity to come out of his shell

My partner always says he thinks it’s amazing how expressive my dog’s eyes are :) Doggo usually uses that to his advantage to get more well-deserved treats and belly rubs.

He likes to look at me while on walks to get a treat, and he basically always gets one, because I melt every time when I see those eyes

A 10-Year-Old Dog Who Had Given Up Hope in an Italian Shelter, One Year Later

“My sisters old soul of a dog in the shelter in Italy (he was 10y at that time) and 1 year later — happy as can be”

He really gave up hope and this was the fact that made us get him. He just bloomed so much within a year

He is so spoiled now and can live a happy dog live with lots of love

A 13-Year-Old Cat Nobody Would Adopt, Two Years After He Came Home

“2 years ago today I met a cat named Sonny who no one would adopt because he was 13 years old. He came home with me that night and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.”

He looked rough at first but once he started eating well his coat shocked us with how soft and pretty it is!

Honestly he’s such a Wonderful little friend that I don’t feel I’ve done anything special.

Sonny came home the same night he was met, at 13, after nobody else would take him. Two years later his owner still doesn’t think it was anything special, which might be the best review an old cat can get.

Have you ever adopted an older pet, and what surprised you most in the first year? Tell us in the comments.
