12 Stray Cats and Dogs Who Chose Their Family, Like a Mama Cat on the Porch and a Dog Behind the Garage

My grandmother had a rule: any stray who showed up on her porch three days in a row had picked us, not the other way around. I thought it was a joke until a gray tabby started sleeping on her porch swing the August I helped with her tomatoes. Nobody in these 12 stories was planning on a new pet. These stray cats and dogs decided for them.

What my dog found under a parked car.

“My dog brought a stray cat home”

About a week ago we were on a walk, and Hallie laid down on the sidewalk with her tail wagging. I thought she was just being a silly puppy but when I got down on her level, I could see a cat looking at us from underneath a nearby parked car. After some coaxing, a sweet little tortoiseshell kitty walked up to us. The animals sniffed each other, and seemed to immediately accept each other as friends. She purred as I pet her.

After a 10-minute visit we got up to continue our walk, and the kitty followed us the entire half-mile or so home. Although I love all animals, I’m highly allergic to cats and had no cat food on hand, but gave her a can of tuna she quickly inhaled. It broke my heart to have to leave her on the front porch, but I told myself if she was still out there the next day, I would get some cat food.

Well, the cat never left. She greatly enjoys human affection and happily climbs into my lap every time I come out to the porch.

She has made fast friends with both my dog and my human daughter, and my human daughter recently decided to name the kitty Willow. I have a shelf in my pantry now dedicated to cat food.

Welcome home Willow, we are so happy to have you.

The New Year’s Eve guest who stayed.

“He walked into my house and just never left”

So, this guy turns up on my doorstep New Year’s Eve night 4 years ago. He was super friendly & clearly used to humans.

I took him in the house as it was heavy rain in the middle of the wet season. My older cat was very chill about it.

My plan was to get him treated at the vet’s and find him a permanent home.

Well, he had other ideas.

He just fell into step perfectly with my other cat and I. I named him Aslan.

We moved house and he started jumping into the swimming pool of his own accord. I couldn’t believe a cat would do that.

He’s VERY vocal. Absolutely refuses to stay inside for longer than a few hours. He will scream nonstop if you try to defy his wishes.

He’s ingratiated himself with all the neighbours, who appear to love having him sleep on their bed / chairs outside.

He’s just regal. Announces his presence whenever he comes back from one of his strolls.

From chasing her home to waiting for her bus.

“Now he waits at the bus stop with her in the mornings AND comes back when she gets home from school.”

A girl with a backpack waits by a stop sign, her bags on the sidewalk. A small, fluffy ginger dog stands right beside her. He belongs to the neighbors, and according to her mom, he used to chase her home from this stop. Now he sniffs the grass, trots straight back to her, and stays close while she crouches down to pet him.

From our editor:

Grandma’s gray tabby never once came inside, and she never asked him to. Every morning he walked her from the porch to the end of the garden and sat between the tomato rows until she was done. She called him the foreman. It took me years to get the joke: he had simply decided her mornings needed a supervisor.

“He is not part of the family”

“The former feral cat my parents swore they didn’t want now has a front row seat to the fireplace”

Backstory: this guy was a feral cat living outside my parents place. My mom was allergic and they didn’t want him. My dad built him an outdoor house so he can stay on the porch, but one snow storm he got lost and my mom felt insanely guilty. He showed up a few days after the storm and they decided to let him stay inside. This was probably 8 years ago and him and my dad have been best friends ever since.

One time while the cat was still living outside, I said something about taking the cat to the vet and my dad went, “I am not taking him to the vet. He’s just a cat and he can hang out on the porch but he is not part of the family.”

Look at them now :) The cat is very obviously now his favorite son.

Rosie, her six kittens and the neighbor’s porch.

“Kept the family together”

This is Rosie and her 6 babies. I thought Rosie was my next door neighbors cat for months because she waited on his porch (she even slept in the bushes outside his door).

Well... on Valentine’s Day I walked past expecting to see Rosie but instead, see the first photo. I immediately knocked on the door and told my neighbor I’ll take them all. He helped me put her and her 6 (thankfully healthy) babies in a laundry basket and bring them up to my screened-in porch.

They were in my apartment within minutes and they’ve been with me ever since. I watched Rosie go from sleeping with one eye open to literally being my soul cat and I don’t know where I’d be without her now. Watching her raise her babies and being there for her is the most special experience I have ever been a part of in my entire life.

“I didn’t. He picked me.”

“There were hundreds of street dogs, but only this one followed me home. Choosing to start the long process of getting him to the UK was a big decision. I decided I would not try and put him on a lead, so if at any point he wanted to leave me he could and I would not take him to the UK. But if he followed me to the taxi we were leaving in I was taking him, and of course he never left my side.”

On a sunny street of low houses, a woman walks toward the camera, and a black-and-tan street dog trots after her without a leash. The words on the screen ask, “How did you pick your dog?” A second later comes the answer: “I didn’t. He picked me.” He keeps pace at her side the whole way, tail up.

The dog behind the garage.

“Stray dog showed up. Found owner. Got to keep him!”

Came home one evening and there was a scared dog hiding behind the garage. I live out in the country and had heard that there was a stray in the neighborhood and no one claimed it. Took time to get to know him and for him to become friendly. Gave him a little food, and got him real food the next day.

Wanted to keep him, but did the right thing and posted on social media. After many shares, the owner reached out and said they’d come get him, but couldn’t that day. The next day they said they were struggling to find time for him and that I could keep him. So he’s here!

I changed his name from before. He’s called Radar.

He does have a blue collar though. It’s all I could find.

He knows the sound of my car lock.

“This cat is not my cat but whenever I get home from work and he happens to hear my car lock, he shoots out of nowhere and follows me to my door meowing till I sit down and allow him to take a nap on my lap 10/10 would pet again”

He comes full sprint like he was like, “Hey! She’s home!”

I always wonder what his owner would say if she saw me just sitting there snuggling her cat.

It is nice to pet a cat. Makes me feel calmer having this little warm ball of fluff purring away when he comes by.

I’ve brought him inside once and he was also quite skittish so we chill outside.

I feel like my rabbit is gonna sit me down now and demand we talk about this.

From our editor:

The foreman had a second address. Two houses down, a neighbor fed him supper and called him by another name entirely. Grandma knew. Every Sunday that summer she sent me over with a bag of tomatoes, and I came back with a can of tuna “for the cat.” Neither of them ever said whose cat he was, and I think they liked it that way.

The cat Mom still doesn’t want.

“Mom with the cat she didn’t want”

He was a friendly stray she saw on the front porch one day. She didn’t want him, but she left out food. Then she bought him toys, then she bought a pouch to put the needy 18lb cat in. She still doesn’t want him, but he’s also her baby who can do nothing wrong.

She literally bought toys for him before he got a name. You can see them in the first photo

He’s enjoying the indoor life, and is absolutely adapted well to being domesticated. Definitely not a dwarf panther that she brought into our house.

Theo is always on me when I sleep. Seems cute but he’s absolutely massive, warm and he nibbles when I “ignore” him. Sleep counts as ignoring.

Milo’s first winter indoors.

“When you let an outdoor stray cat inside during the winter, and he finally feels safe and warm for the first time.. my heart CANNOT handle it, him climbing into the cat bed after he ate. Sweet Milo, you don’t have to be scared and alone anymore.”

The video opens on the author with her hand over her mouth, eyes full of tears. Then a clip from outside at night: a gray-and-white cat by a little garden fence, looking up at the window. Inside, the same cat is curled up in a soft blue cat bed, and when she strokes him, he closes his eyes and lifts his chin into her hand.

“I guess I have a dog now”

“This little guy followed me home and then fell asleep on my lap, so I guess I have a dog now”

I know he’s gonna need food/bed/leash, but what else do we need right away?

Hey bunch of people asking for an update: I actually didn’t have this puppy for longer than a couple of hours.

His very worried family was out walking around in the neighborhood looking for him and he’s safe and back with them now. Although now I’m thinking I might really want to get a dog for myself.

Ps: His name is Major.

From our editor:

The first cold night, Grandma put a cardboard box on the porch for him and wrote “TEMPORARY” on the side. He slept in it for years. When she finally bought him a real cat bed, she cut the word out of the box and taped it to the new one. I keep three of her seed envelopes, and I wish I had that scrap of cardboard too.

Scooter, 19 years later.

“I brought home a stray cat when I was 17 years old. I’m 36 now. Every time I go to my parents house, I check to make sure he is still there and give him some extra love before I leave. Meet Scooter.”

I found him living behind a restaurant near the one I worked at. I told my mom about him for days and she kept saying no and then she showed up to pick me up one day with a cage and helped me catch him. He was skinny but sweet.

We guessed he was probably about 1.

A pet who picks you never acts like a guest. One took the front row by the fireplace, one took over the neighbors’ chairs, and Scooter was still getting his extra love 19 years later.
