15 Bosses People Still Talk About Years Later — One Sat With a Crying Employee for an Hour Without Asking a Single Question

Most people can name the bad bosses immediately. The ones who micromanaged, who took credit, who made every Monday slightly worse than it needed to be. The good ones are rarer — and they tend to be remembered for something specific. A paid day off when everyone expected a bonus. A door closed and an hour given without questions. A personalized note written by hand when a printed certificate would have done just as well.

These 15 boss stories about kindness, compassion, and the particular way good leadership stays with people long after they’ve left the job prove that the bosses people remember most are almost never the ones who were simply competent.

  • I had a very easygoing boss. Basically all he asked was that we do our jobs to the best of our abilities. And... he also used to randomly do magic tricks. Weird, I know. Like serious magic tricks that would just blow us all away. You can’t really not like a boss that does magic tricks at work.
  • For 6 months, I handled the project all by myself, while my coworker’s only contribution was the occasional chat message. Then at a staff meeting, my boss publicly thanked my coworker for the project! I sat there with my face burning, but I chose not to make a scene in front of everyone.
That evening, I handed in my resignation. An hour later, I was called in to see the CEO. I was already bracing myself for a shouting match, but he kindly asked what had happened. When I told him, he apologized, said he understood how I felt, and approved a bonus for me!
Bright Side
  • Our company had its annual picnic out of town. But some of our coworkers stayed behind at the factory, since you can’t exactly shut down production. Toward the end, we started figuring out who would take the leftovers home.
But the boss beat everyone to it: he packed up all the barbecue and fruit, loaded it into his trunk, and drove off. We looked at each other: seriously, he took it all for himself?! Then on Monday, we found out he’d driven the food over to the guys on shift who missed the party.

Halloween is my favorite time of the year. Came to work to my desk decorated for the day by my managers.

  • My boss lent me the first month’s rent and security deposit on a house because he knew we couldn’t afford it, I’d only been working for the company a month at the time. He said, “After a few months when you’ve settled in, we’ll talk about payback.”
6 months later, I asked when he’d like me to pay him back, he replied, “Nah, we’ll call it a gift.” One of the best jobs I’ve ever had, and I’m still good friends with him 20 years later.
  • I always thought my boss wasn’t particularly interesting. But yesterday, he put together something we definitely won’t forget.
At the start of the workday, he came out and announced that it was his birthday. So we all set our work aside and headed out for some fun. The first activity was a tactical team game. We ran around, squealing with excitement, and our boss turned out to be an unexpectedly upbeat person. Then we went to a restaurant.
At one point, the boss stood up, thanked us for a wonderful day, and said that he wouldn’t be able to stay with the company for long because of health issues, but that it would be a really great time for all of us.
  • I used to work at a local post-production house. The boss there was a veteran of like over 15 or 16 years at that point. He co-owned the company with 2 other people, yet he was still down in the trenches with us doing all the CG with us.
When high tide came, he would stay with us working until 2 a.m., and would never make us do anything he wouldn’t do himself. Top class guy, learnt truckloads from him.

My boss gave me my Christmas gift a little early this year. A set of cookware plus a food processor!

  • I respect my boss and have worked with her for 6 years between 2 companies. At my new company (started in 2021), I was being harassed and micromanaged by my director (her boss).
My boss told my director that my director is no longer permitted to speak with me directly and if my director has a problem with how I am managing my portfolio, that it is my boss’s fault and not mine because she is giving me direction.
I feel that most bosses wouldn’t be willing to stand up to their boss for their direct reports. Felt it was pretty cool for her to have my back and stand up for me.
  • I started a new job. The owner was pretty gruff and dry but was also a genuinely caring and compassionate man. I was still trying to catch up on all my bills since my previous job had screwed me so bad and at one point my car was about to get repossessed.
The owner found me in the storage closet crying and freaking out and then just wrote me a check to cover what I needed to get my car payment caught up. No questions asked. Never talked about it again. I’ll never forget that act of kindness.
  • I think the nicest thing a boss ever did for me was let me bring my kid to an interview and still gave me the job. Even after I got stranded at her office and had to ask to use her phone to try and find a ride. I was so embarrassed and frustrated. I needed the job so bad and felt like such a failure because obviously I looked like a flake.
She was so nice. She gave my daughter pens to draw with, offered her snacks and when I was sitting outside upset after finally finding a ride to come get us she came out, handed me a card with her direct number on it and told me I was hired.
I cried. I legit bawled like a baby in front of her and my kid but it was just a kind moment. She could have written me off but she didn’t.

23 years ago, my boss gave me this ornament because I loved to eat hot dogs for lunch at work.

  • The coolest boss I had was a chef who was really funny and fair. In the kitchen, there’s a tendency for chefs to not have much margin for error and be super serious so having one who let us make mistakes as humans was cool. He’d take those moments to teach you how to do something more successfully without making it feel like you did something wrong.
  • I work at a law firm, and all of us are serious people who are devoted to our work and put in a lot of effort every day. Except Fridays.
After 5 p.m., our boss tells everyone to step away from their desks, put away the paperwork, turn off their computers, wrap everything up, and set it aside, because that’s when our “Pizza Hour” begins. The company orders a pizza for every employee, and we gather around the dining table to enjoy a delicious meal and chat about our weekend plans.
It’s impossible to put into words just how wonderful and sweet it is! During my interview, I even wondered why the application included a field for “Favorite pizza.”
  • I bought an anti-stress coloring book to help me relax at work. One day, my boss came in looking really upset, so I took a chance and slipped the coloring book to him disguised as an “important memo.” An hour of silence. Then the boss came out and shouted, “Mary, we’re giving you a bonus this month!”
  • I really don’t like new shoes. I wear my old ones until they’re full of holes. As I approached the office’s main entrance, the CEO was standing there and gently hinted that it wasn’t appropriate to wear shoes like that. I laughed it off, and a month later he gave me a raise. Not a big one — just enough for a new pair of shoes.
  • My boss always had a sharp comeback ready. Her usual line for me was, “I get it, but please wipe that opinion off your face.” Love her.
  • I had gotten a new job working for an arborist. I had only worked there for a month but I wanted to take almost a month off to ride motorcycles across Vietnam with a friend. So I texted my boss just to put out feelers if that might even be possible. He replied, “That sounds awesome. Guess I’m not invited.”
