6 Hairstyles With Bangs Stars Over 50 Wear Now, Like Kris Jenner’s Black Bob With Full Bangs

My oldest sister cut her own bangs over the kitchen sink at 14, and Mom still calls them the 1991 decision. She has worn bangs ever since, through every family wedding and every photo in the hallway. These hairstyles with bangs are what stars over 50 wear right now, and stylists explain why the cut works so well with age.

Curtain Bangs, Like Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman, 59, has kept curtain bangs all fall. At the Emmys in September, Allure noted that they split in the center to let a bit of her forehead peek through. By the time she posted from Paris on October 5, they were fuller and, as the magazine later put it, “just long enough to get stuck in her eyelashes.”

Celebrity hairstylist Clayton Hawkins told Vogue of curtain bangs: “It’s flattering, low-commitment, and grows out beautifully.” To ask for them, say “curtain bangs that split in the center and reach the lashes.”

’60s Curtain Bangs With Soft Waves, Like Laura Dern

For the Venice Film Festival, hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos gave Laura Dern, 59, layered blonde waves with curtain bangs that sweep to both sides at cheekbone level. Harper’s Bazaar described the look as “piecey waves with classic curtain bangs à la the ’60s.”

Stylist Nataliia Bumford told the same magazine that “fringes are a timeless choice for women over 50: Face-framing, modern, and effortlessly youthful.” Ask for curtain bangs cut to the cheekbones and styled with a round brush. The waves matter too: hairstylist Michael Gray says that “layered styles are one of the most flattering options for mature hair.”

A Blunt Bob With Heavy Bangs, Like Lisa Rinna

At the InStyle Imagemaker Awards on October 15, Lisa Rinna, 63, debuted an asymmetrical bob finished with blunt bangs: glossy chestnut, rounded at the jaw, with heavy bangs down to the brows. Rinna changes her look often, so think of this one as a styling idea rather than a permanent cut.

Celebrity hairstylist Naeemah LaFond told Vogue that with a blunt bob and bangs, “the end result should still feel effortless and touchable.” And as Clayton Hawkins put it to the same magazine: “Bangs are one of the fastest ways to change your entire look without sacrificing length.”

“Mirror Mirror......🪞”

From the author:

The hair station on the other side of our salon wall had one rule about bangs: never cut them on a Friday. Friday clients wanted a whole new face for the weekend and regretted it by Monday. The stylist sent them home and booked them for Tuesday. Almost every one of them came back for the bangs anyway.

A Jaw-Length Black Bob With Full Bangs, Like Kris Jenner

Kris Jenner, who turns 71 on November 5, posted her look for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on October 20: a glossy black bob at the jaw with thick, straight bangs at brow level. The bob is her signature, and ELLE once described another version of it as “balanced by a bumped-up bang.”

Naeemah LaFond told Vogue that “bangs are really about framing.” Ask for a jaw-length blunt bob with full, straight bangs that just touch the brows. Stylist Nataliia Bumford adds that “a good fringe draws attention to your best features.”

A Full, Lash-Grazing Fringe With Long Hair, Like Monica Bellucci

At Vogue World in Milan on September 22, Monica Bellucci, 62, wore long, straight dark hair with a full, soft fringe that grazes her lashes. Vogue’s guide to long hair over 50 puts it simply: “If you’re ready to dive deep into the world of bangs, go all the way with a blunt cut like Monica Bellucci.”

In the same piece, hairstylist Paul Edmonds says that soft fringes and layers that draw attention to the eyes and cheekbones “are always good.” Or, as NYC hairstylist Rubi Aguilar puts it: “Bangs quite literally frame your face.”

From the author:
My oldest sister is still the family authority on bangs. Her rules, learned the hard way in 1991: cut them dry, leave them a little longer than you think, and never, ever use the kitchen scissors. She has broken only the last rule since, and only once.

Brow-Skimming Bangs on a Shoulder-Length Bob, Like Penélope Cruz

Penélope Cruz, 52, debuted blunt bangs in August, trimmed just above her eyebrows, on her shoulder-length bob, and she has kept them all fall, from Venice to the London Film Festival in October, where she wore them with the rest of her hair swept to one side.

Hairstylist Chad Cook told ELLE that “fall is a great time to add a little more shape and texture around the face.” Ask for soft bangs just above the brows that can part slightly in the middle. Cook adds that “soft, longer curtain bangs can be customized to almost anyone.”

What Stylists Say to Tell Your Hairdresser

The stylists behind these looks agree on one thing: lighter is better. Clayton Hawkins told Vogue that “as hair gets finer or more fragile, bangs need a lighter touch,” and Naeemah LaFond added that “anything too heavy can take away the movement.”

Celebrity hairstylist Danielle Priano told Who What Wear that a great fringe “can highlight the eyes and cheekbones, soften the face, and make even a simple ponytail or bun feel intentional.” Bring a photo, ask for a little longer than you think, and trim later.

Bangs are the cheapest bravery in any salon: one small cut, and the whole face changes. Every stylist I ever heard through that wall said the same thing about them. Go a little longer than you think you want.
