8 Daughters Who Wore Their Moms’ Clothes Decades Later, and the 1960s Gown That Went to Prom Twice

As the youngest of four sisters, I didn’t own a new piece of clothing until I was twelve, and the best things that came down the line started in my mom’s closet. Her 1983 denim jacket has been worn by all four of us, and she still asks for it back every Christmas. These 8 daughters wore their moms’ clothes decades later and took photos to prove it.

A 1974 Prom Dress, Worn Again in 1995 and 2001

“Me in ‘01, my sister in ‘95, and my mom in ‘74, all in the same Prom dress.”

I’m sorry it’s out of order; I know that’s gonna bug y’all.

That was actually a jacket that my sister and decided against wearing. I don’t think we had any alterations!

Both of our daughters are in high school now so there should be an update on the next few years!

From the author:

The denim jacket came down to me with four sets of initials on the label, in four different handwritings, the way my sisters marked everything we shared. Mine are the smallest, squeezed in under the collar, because by then there was no room left. Mom’s are on top, in ballpoint, from 1983. When she asks for it back at Christmas, she taps the label like it’s a deed.

A 1960s Gown From Grandma’s Military Ball, Worn to Prom in 1991 and Again in 2017

“My mom going to prom, 1991 and me going to prom, 2017”

Yep it was actually my grandmothers she wore to the military ball! It was bought in the 1960s.

Basically the dress despite its beauty has had a few modifications (the zipper breaking as well as my mom and I being a couple inches taller than my grandma and needing modification there) and she fears that if it’s tailored much more it may be ruined somehow? I’m not a seamstress so I’m by no means an expert.

Hopefully! Although the woman who helped tailored it to fix the broken zipper said this may sadly be the last time. Who knows though! :)

Mom was so beyond excited for me to wear the dress!

A Floral Dress From the Early ’90s, Mom’s Favorite in Her 20s and Now Her Daughter’s

“My mom’s favorite dress in her 20s became my favorite dress in my 20s”

80s/90s era floral dress. Such a lovely dress.

I also inherited a lacy slip skirt from her that I never realized might go with the dress! I’m going to have to wear them together now!

A Grandmother’s 1970 “Las Vegas” Evening Dress, Worn by Her Granddaughter

“My daughter wearing her grandmothers evening dress from 1970”

Her “Las Vegas” dress. A black halter dress with cut out midriff.

From the author:
Last Christmas my oldest sister finally handed the jacket back. Mom put it on, stood in the hallway under the old family photos for exactly one picture, then took it off and gave it to me, because, she said, it was my turn. By our count it was my sister’s. Nobody argued. In my family, a piece of clothing is only really Mom’s on the day she gives it away.

A 1969 Prom Dress That Went to a Little Sister’s Prom in 1973

“My mother (right) wore her older sister’s 1969 prom dress to her 1973 prom. Their dates are brothers (and my aunt has since been married to her date for 50 years!).”

My aunt has told me more than once that the most annoying thing my mum ever did was wearing her brand-new clothes (bought with her own hard-earned money) before she even got to. My mother would even carefully reattach the tags and steam/press the garments and put them back in the closet after wearing them to avoid being found out!

Mom’s 1974 Homecoming Dress, Found in the Basement and Tried On

“Found my Mom’s homecoming dress from 1974 in the basement”

From the author:
If you’re saving something for your daughter, here’s the advice from my mom’s closet: keep it in cotton, not plastic, and write the year inside. The denim jacket survived four girls on a wooden hanger with an old pillowcase over it, never a dry-cleaning bag. The year is what turns an old jacket into a story.

A Bunch of Mom’s Old Dresses in the Attic, From a Mom Born in the 1920s

“Found a bunch of my moms old dresses in her attic”

I’ve got to go through them still—this was the first I tried on, it caught my eye as the most fanciful

The tag has been removed so I don’t know the maker. Mom was born in the 1920s

A Pumpkin Costume Mom Sewed 35 Years Ago, Now Worn by Her Granddaughter

“35yrs ago my mother handmade me this Halloween costume. She saved it all this time and now gave to my daughter.”

She really is amazing.

Still found the time and energy to make this. As a parent myself now I have no idea how she did it.

Shout out to you Mom!

The costume in the last story skipped a generation and came back 35 years later, and the grandmother who sewed it got to see both of its owners. Something saved in a closet stops belonging to one person, and every owner gets her own photo in it.
