Q&A:

Q: Does the item maintain its shape or does it collapse like other canvas bags?
A: I’ve had this bag for a while and have had no problems with it at all. It keeps its shape, and no problems with its zippers and the number of pockets. Really glad I purchased this gym bag, which is in use at least 3 times a week.

Q: Is it suitable as an airline carry-on bag?
A: Yes, it is. It can be compressed easily

Q: Is the shoe compartment divided from the main bag, or can you just use the whole bag in one piece?
A: The shoe compartment is part of the main bag. It goes into the main compartment with fabric separating the 2.

Happy buyer’s review: This is a good bag. I use it for the gym. It has plenty of room for all the stuff I need to take to the gym. There’s pretty much a pocket for everything. Shoes, towel, pre-workout drink, protein shake, gloves, backup shirt, phone, keys, etc. So many pockets! If you’re old like me, you may forget where you put stuff, but that’s not the bag’s fault! I wear a size 13W shoe, and it fits in the shoe compartment with ease. A sweaty shirt and towel can go into the waterproof compartment on the bottom. Nice bag! @J. Westerberg

2. Best bang for your buck: This bag is made of high-quality Oxford fabric and offers features that will be enough for a gym enthusiast.

Q&A:

Q: Is the mesh side large enough to hold a 64 oz water bottle?
A: I would say yes, depending on the shape of the bottle. Short and squat may not fit well.

Q: Is the entire bag waterproof, or just the plastic zipper pocket?
A: Just the fairly large plastic bag is actually waterproof, but I have found the fabric of the entire bag and the inner lining is fairly water-resistant.

Q: Is it easy to clean the bag?
A: Absolutely! The lining is very durable

Happy buyer’s review: This bag is the perfect size for hitting the gym before work. It holds a complete change of clothes for work, and the “wet pouch” is a decent size. It holds a pair of shower shoes and a wet towel. It can be hard to get shoes into the shoe pouch if the main bag is already loaded up, but as long as you put the shoes in first, or don’t pile a bunch of stuff on top of the shoe part, you should be fine. @ksnatale

3. Best for fashionistas: This bag comes from a trusted brand and is made from 3D ripstop material that is built to stand up to wear and tear.

Q&A:

Q: Can I use this as a carry-on bag for travel?
A: You can definitely use it as a carry-on bag for travel. Its size is within the allowable parameters for a carry-on.

Q: Is the bottom hard and waterproof?
A: It’s not hard, but it’s made from a thicker layer of nylon. I don’t think it’s waterproof, but it is repellent.

Q: Will the inside flake off into my clothes like my last Adidas bag?
A: No, it would not. It doesn’t have any cloth-like feeling on the inside. I believe it’s 100% nylon.

Happy buyer’s review: This bag is amazing. Perfect for a gym bag, carry-on, or overnight bag.
Definitely not as large as the pictures make it look. Not large enough to put a yoga mat IN the bag, but it can be put across the top under the straps and still be carried comfortably.
One of the pockets has a mesh-like section that’s perfect for sweaty or dirty items to keep them away from the others without getting grosser (access to air). The other 2 pockets are great for items like headphones, fresh socks, etc. @ColeTan

4. Best budget bag: This bag is a well-built option, without any bells or whistles, that will provide enough space for your needs. It’s specially designed according to the daily activities of fitness enthusiasts. Plus, it’s practical and durable.

Q&A:

Q: When you put your wet swim trunks in the bag, will the whole bag get wet or just that pocket?
A: There is a waterproof pocket in the bag that is sealed from the rest of the bag and covers the entire bottom. It’s on the side of the bag.

Q: Can the gym bag be washed in a washing machine?
A: Yes, it’s really strong and suitable for everything, everywhere.

Q: Is this strong material?
A: Yes, very strong. I think the fabric of this bag is a little thicker than what I used before, and it is very 3-dimensional. It holds its shape well enough. It’s firm but flexible, as it has to be able to fold back down. The long shoulder strap appears well sewn on too. I’ve only used this bag every day now. So far, is big enough and strong enough for me to take to the gym and work. Hope that helps.

Happy buyer’s review: I am a new person to the gym, so I’m trying to get some nice, practical gear for my trips there. I’m a manager and mostly go to the gym on my lunch breaks, so I need a larger bag capable of holding all my gear, and this bag really is so practical. Wet pocket for swim shorts, etc., nice internal mesh zip pocket for all the items from my pocket like keys, phones, etc. Even with the shoes inside the bag, I have plenty of space for my towel, gym gear, and socks. The external side pocket holds all my toiletries, and there’s a handy pocket for my water bottle. There’s a carry strap, a shoulder strap, and nice grip feet on the base of the bag. People did say the bags were creased, which they were, but these easily disappeared after a few days of my bag being loaded up. Very nice, quality-looking bag. @Mr. James T. Burns

5. Simple yet solid: This bag comes at an attractive price and has a unique feature — a specially designed pedestal that allows it to stand more straight and decrease friction.

  • Adjustable cushion shoulder strap + dual handles help you carry the bag easily.
  • A solid, hard bottom prevents the bag from falling down when it’s full.

This bag has several compartments:

  • Main compartment
  • Inside lining pocket for valuables
  • Shoe compartment with holes for ventilation
  • Front zipped pocket for keys, cards, cellphones, and small accessories
  • Side pocket for a bottle, umbrella, shampoo, body wash, or facial cleanser

Q&A:

Q: Does this bag have a solid base?
A: It’s not rigid if that is what you are after.

Q: Can we put it in the washer?
A: Yes, the product is washer-friendly.

Q: Will the shoe compartment hold size 15 shoes?
A: It will be tight. I’ve packed size 14s with about 2 days’ worth of clothes in it for travel.

Happy buyer’s review: I love this gym bag. I’ve been using this one for a few weeks now, and I love the way it looks and the space it has for everything. I’ll keep all my clean clothes in the main bag area, and then any dirty clothes after a workout I can put in this side zipper that keeps them away from my good clothes, and it has a vent to let it air out on my ride back home. @Anthony

6. For everyday use: This bag will become your perfect companion in sports, on trips, and during outdoor activities.

Q&A:

Q: Does anyone know if this bag fits in a gym locker?
A: Yes it does, I am very pleased with the quality, style, and cost of this bag.

Q: Does this still hold its shape when empty, or is it collapsible?
A: It does hold its shape despite it being empty. It’s not a foldable bag.

Q: Does anyone know if the shoe section will hold size 11 trainers?
A: Yes, easily.

Happy buyer’s review: I’ve been using this bag for nearly 7 weeks now, and it’s still as strong as ever with no signs of wear and tear: good quality material! It allows me to put not only clothes inside but multiple bath towels and my shoes too, whilst still having an elasticated bottle holder on the outside. It is great for on-the-go changing, or if you are like me and keep the bag under your work desk for midday workouts away from home. My only problem would be that the waterproof compartment is too small for bigger towels. I’ve had to use it for small clothes instead. @Connor

7. Best for organizing your stuff: This bag has loads of space (and the most compartments of all the bags on the list) and is designed very well.

  • 2 zippered front and back pockets
  • 6 internal pockets

Q&A:

Q: I’m looking to use it for skating and wonder if it has a firm base. My skates always have blade covers on, but it’s helpful when there’s a firm base.
A: No, it doesn’t have a firm base, but it’s made from a thick material. It doesn’t hold its shape like in the image.

Q: Is there a compartment for wet towels/clothes?
A: The compartment that your shoes go in is the only waterproof part, so you could always utilize that for your wet garments and put the rest of your gear in the bag.

Q: Is this machine washable?
A: Yes, you can machine wash it. I have done it loads of times as my sports bag smells a lot. It hasn’t gone wrong yet, but I would suggest you turn the bag inside out when you do.

Happy buyer’s review: I’m delighted with this gym bag. I have got another gym bag, but this is now my favorite. The material is high quality, or it feels like really high quality. I bought this gym bag, so I could separate trainers, clean clothes, and dirty ones. This bag is made for it as there is a compartment for trainers and clean clothes can be separated from dirty ones. It’s large enough for extra clothes and badminton shuttlecocks. Brilliantly designed with lots of side pockets for my wallet and phone and many more. I would recommend. @Phuong T.

8. Best for those who don’t like bulky bags: This gym bag is the most compact on the list, but it will still carry all the essentials you need for the gym.

  • Weight: 322 g (0.7 lbs)
  • Capacity: 22.6 L
  • The bag comes in 6 colors: black, grey, navy blue, red, orange, royal blue

The bag has 4 different pockets to suit your needs. They include:

  • 1 main compartment
  • 2 front mesh pockets
  • 1 open front pocket

Q&A:

Q: Does this bag have a separate shoe compartment?
A: This bag doesn’t have a separate compartment.

Q: Is there a solid bottom?
A: The bottom is a slightly thicker material that looks identical to the sides, presumably more durable than the rest of the bag, but not solid by any means. By that, I mean that you can easily fold it in half with no problem.

Q: Can this bag go in the washer/dryer?
A: This gym bag cannot go into the washer/dryer. We recommend spot cleaning and hanging it to dry.

Happy buyer’s review: This gym bag is perfect for my needs. It carries everything I need for the gym. Yes, it’s kind of on the cheap side. But at the price, it’s a very good value. If it tears or otherwise wears out in a year or 2, I will have gotten my money’s worth.

I was using a 25″ wide High Sierra duffel bag, but I had to stuff and crush it pretty hard into the locker at the gym. At 17″ wide, this bag fits perfectly into the locker. I can comfortably fit into this bag:
— a full sweat suit, top and bottoms
— a pair of shower shoes
— my shower towel and washcloth
— my hand-sized gym towel
— an extra T-shirt to wear home
— and my small toiletry bag
...with a little room left over.

The mesh bottle pockets (2) are made for the thin single-use 500 ml water bottles in the photo. I use a 500 ml Clean Bottle, which is made for cycling. It’s a little bigger than the single-use bottles. It’s a very tight fit, but with a little care, I can get it into the mesh bottle pocket. If I end up tearing one of these pockets, oh well, I’ve got another one to work with.
The single pocket between the bottle pockets is just an open pocket. It has no closure or fastener on top. I keep my locker padlock, keys, and road ID in it. There isn’t room for a whole lot else here.
The carry handles are 1—1/8″ woven nylon straps. Nothing fancy — no padding or wrap handle on them. They are sewn to the bag all the way down the front and back, but not under the bottom. They are plenty strong enough to carry normal go-to-the-gym type stuff. (If you want a bag to carry your dumbbells and 25 lb plates, you may want to consider something else.)
The shoulder strap is also 1—1/8″ woven nylon. It also has no fancy padding or wrap handle. It is adjustable in length. It is sewn onto the sides of the bag at a single point on each side, and it is not readily removable. This could be a failure point if you carry heavy stuff and use the shoulder strap. I don’t use it, so I adjusted it to just fit around the back of the bag out of the way. I’m considering cutting it off.
The top opening to the main compartment is a very large U-shaped opening with a double zipper. It is easy to get all the items into/out of the bag. Yes, the zipper is on the cheap side and could possibly hang up or break with rough handling. I just don’t zip the zipper. I fold the flap over and leave it unzipped.
There is no stiffener inserted in the bottom of the bag. The bottom is 600 denier nylon, just like the sides and top. It feels like it might have a little bit of rubber-like substance on it for resistance to abrasion, but that’s about it.
The bag arrived well-packaged and a day or 2 earlier than scheduled. It had a slight plasticky odor at first, but this has subsided after 3 weeks. I’m happy with it. I think you would be, too. @David J. Akins

9. Most durable: This sports bag is made of high-quality polyester fabric, which makes it fully waterproof, tear-resistant, and durable.

  • Size: 55 cm x 26 cm x 29 cm (21.6″ x 10.2″ x 11.4″)
  • Weight: 1.1 kg (2.4 lbs)
  • Capacity: 40 L
  • Its padded handles and straps guarantee maximum comfort for shoulders and hands.
  • Thanks to its reinforced bottom with nubs, the bag is perfectly protected, robust, and keeps its shape.
  • It’s not only suitable for the gym! Due to its maximum versatility, it is also a wonderful travel companion as a shoulder bag, in which you can quickly and comfortably store all your travel items! If you’re passionate about cycling, you can simply strap the bag over your shoulders as a backpack.

To keep your stuff organized, you can use the following compartments:

  • Main compartment
  • Shoe compartment with breathable air holes
  • Mesh pocket on the side for water bottles
  • Waterproof wet compartment
  • Mesh pocket for cell phone, keys, wallet, and other valuables

Q&A:

Q: Is the whole bag waterproof?
A: Yes

Q: Can you go running with it?
A: I have gone cycling with it. So I couldn’t see why not. In my experience, it feels very comfortable on your back, too. I’m not sure how it would work for running, but I’d say yes.

Q: Is the shoe compartment long enough for size 14s?
A: Yes, and bigger. I’m size 14, and I can fit my trainers in with lots of space left.

Happy buyer’s review: So I bought this bag with low anticipation and, honestly, I’m pretty blown away. It’s not big by any means, but it holds everything I have — my lifting shoes, belts, straps, chalk, and so on.
Pockets for everything to be separated, even your sweaty clothing after training.
The quality of the zips seems to be pretty good and impressive. Usually, bags you find online, have terrible quality zips and break easily. But these seem to be very good quality.
I gave it 5 stars for water resistance, but I honestly have no clue. I haven’t gotten it wet yet, so you’ll have to judge that.
Lightweight and seemingly durable. Pockets are fine for my size 12 shoes, and I have no problem fitting them in these with extra space, it seems. As we know, shoes can stink out of a training bag as they get older and more used, but that side pocket stops them from mixing with your gear even if they are felt inside of the main pocket with a cover.
All in all, I really like this bag. Great to leave all the basic stuff in there and I never have to worry about it all smelling after a hard couple of sessions daily.
I take this away with me to work, and it’s super easy to carry. I also sometimes cycle 10 miles to the gym, I wear it like a backpack, and it does not seem to bother me at all. Very comfortable.
Highly recommended. @DD

10. Best capacity: This bag can boast the biggest capacity on the list (60 L). It’s great for 5–7 days of travel/camping/weeklong trips/backpacking and is designed with adjustable backpack straps that can be easily attached or detached. PLUS, it’s airline carry-on size.

Q&A:

Q: Is the base of the bag solid and removable? I.e. does the bag totally fold up, or is there a board of some kind on the bottom?
A: There is not a board on the bottom of the bag. I guess you could fold it if you like.

Q: Is the shoe compartment waterproof?
A: The shoe compartment is not waterproof. We recommend you pack the wet shoes in the dry sack first, hope this helps.

Q: Does this bag have a strap to go around your chest?
A: Yes

Happy buyer’s review: I’ve looked long and hard for a good basketball bag. So far, this is the best I’ve found for my personal use. I’ve used duffles found on Amazon, like Nike Elite bags, and seen many others used by friends in gyms, including ones by Adidas, Under Armour, Point3, various Nike bags, and many others. So far, this is my favorite bag, even though it is a little large. If they made this in light grey, khaki, or light blue, I would probably buy one of those versions. I know they make those colors in other bags in the same material.

Pros/Likes:
— I can fit 2 pairs of basketball shoes, a basketball, clothes, a tripod (for videotaping), knee pads, ankle braces, extra athletic tape, contacts, locker lock, scissors for athletic tape, Advil, a ball pump, sometimes cones/floor markers/training equipment for my kids and their practices, a glasses case, etc., and there is still space for more stuff.
— I like the second layer mesh zipper for the shoe section. This means I can leave the outer layer unzipped, and the inner layer zipped for aeration, and not worry that anything will fall out.
— The bag seems pretty durable. I’ve taken it to the gym and courts about 5–10 times now.
— The bag can be slung like a duffle or carried like a backpack. I like both options. Straps are removable either way. You can keep all on or just the ones you want.
— I like that there are places to hook carabiners around the bag and on the straps.
— I like the extra handles on the sides of the bag.

Cons/dislikes:
— There isn’t a water bottle pocket. I need to either put it in the bag or clip it to the outside with a carabiner.
— There is an extra flap all the way around the main compartment. Some may like this for added durability and protection from the elements, but for my purposes, it is a little bit of a hindrance. It just makes it harder to unzip the bag. I only use it for gym purposes, so the extra durability/protection isn’t needed for me.
— For some people, this bag may be too big and hefty as a duffle. When I go to the basketball gym or regular gym, I am always the person with the largest bag. I think if it was just 1–2 inches smaller in a couple of dimensions, it would be a better fit for me, but as is, I still like the bag better than the smaller 45-liter version. I actually bought both and returned the 45 L because I couldn’t fit 2 pairs of basketball shoes, a basketball, clothes, and a tripod in the bag. So the 45 L was just a hair too small and the 60 L is more than big enough. A 50–55 L probably would’ve been perfect for me. I’m 5’9″, and this bag feels pretty large on me when carrying it either as a backpack or a duffle. It’s probably the largest backpack I own, and I own a pretty large camera bag as well. I like bags. I likely have more than 10 different bags of various types for uses.
— I wish there were 2 medium inside zipper pockets. One of the 2 medium pockets is an easy-access pocket, closed by a small piece of Velcro. Since things can fall out of that, I don’t use it. I need 2 pockets because I would use one to stash my phone, wallet, and earphones, and I would use the other to store my lock, contacts, scissors, Advil, etc. The inside large mesh pocket works for my phone, wallet, and earphones, but is too big and hard to fish around for loose items. And the outside zipper pocket is too flat, tight, and small for my phone. I’m afraid that my phone would get banged up when it’s so tight in the outside pocket. I don’t want my phone and earbuds to be with my locker lock and scissors (a small pair for cutting athletic tape).
— Sometimes, there is a medium-sized zippered pocket on the opposite end of the duffle where the shoes are. This bag doesn’t have a zippered pocket there, and I think it would be useful for me.
— I wish the inside of the bag wasn’t black. A lot of stuff is black (ankle braces, knee pads, clothes, tape, etc.), so it makes it hard to see things inside the bag. Many of my bags have higher contrast inner liners (light grey, orange, etc.) to make it easier to see the inner contents of the bag. @J. Cheng

Q&A:

Q: Is this bag waterproof?
A: Technically, it is not. The bag is made of tough canvas, so it easily withstands light showers but will eventually soak in persistent heavy rain.

Q: Is there a sleeve on the back/bottom for storing the backpack straps when it’s being used as a hold-all/handbag?
A: Yes, you disconnect the bottom strap and slide the straps into a sleeve on the back.

Q: Does it have a shoe compartment?
A: No, but has enough space to store shoes inside.

Happy buyer’s review: This was my third attempt at getting a decent bag for walking to the gym with my kit. My priorities were:
1) Roomy enough for gym kit, including shoes, but small enough to fit in the narrow lockers at the gym.
2) Easy to carry on my back.
3) Robust.
4) Showerproof.
This bag met these criteria pretty well. It’s made of strong canvas that seems to keep out the rain. I was pleased to find the front pocket was big enough to hold my shoes. All my other kits easily fit into the main compartment, and it’s comfortable to carry and doesn’t slip off my shoulders. The main compartment and the front pocket are closed with good-quality plastic zippers, and one of the smaller compartments inside is zipped. It’s got a couple of extra pockets on the outside and 3 more small compartments inside that are not zipped. The only criticism I have is that it could be improved by making more of the small compartments closable by zip and by adding a zipped pocket on the underside of the flap that closes the main compartment. @pogmoor
