Anna Bondareva

Relationship & Human Behavior Writer | Eternal Optimist

Hi there! I’m Anna.

I’ve been part of the Bright Side family since 2017, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that there is always a way out of a slump. I’m a firm believer that "giving up" isn't in our vocabulary as long as we’re willing to look for the light—and maybe crack a joke or two along the way. I don't just write stories; I hunt for the silver linings in the messy, complicated, and hilarious world of human nature. That's why my primary focus is on heartfelt stories of kindness, empathy, compassion, and human connection.

I don’t believe in "perfect" lives, but I do believe in better ones. My goal is to make sure that by the time you finish one of my articles, you feel a little lighter, a little kinder, a little smarter, and much more ready to take on the world.

Background

My approach to writing is deeply rooted in my background in Public Relations and Interpretation.

  • My experience in Public Relations taught me the power of a well-told story and the importance of finding the "why" behind every human interaction.
  • My background in Interpretation allows me to "read between the lines" of human behavior, helping me decode the subtle nuances of psychology for my readers.
  • I spent a significant chapter of my life working and volunteering abroad. Living within diverse cultures widened my perspective in ways I never expected, teaching me how environment and experience mold the way we think, feel, and bond.

Kindness can be contagious, and science backs it up. In two experiments, researchers found that witnessing someone do a good deed triggers a distinct uplifting emotion called "elevation"—and people who felt it went on to help others roughly twice as long as those who didn’t. It’s proof that one person’s courage can quietly spread. The heartfelt moments below show what happens when a stranger’s courage meets the right moment—and how kindness, empathy, and compassion ripple out from there.

We like to think we know what to expect from strangers: nothing. One famous experiment suggests we couldn’t be more wrong. The study, titled Mistakenly Seeking Solitude, found that commuters who talked to a stranger enjoyed the ride significantly more than those who sat in silence—the exact opposite of what everyone expected. The ten stories below are what happens when someone doesn’t stay silent and chooses kindness and love instead. A hand on a bike’s handlebar. A warning through a rolled-down car window. A chessboard in the park with a sign that isn’t really about chess. Small moves by total strangers—and for a few people, everything.

Kindness has a strange way of circling back. The empathy, compassion, and love we show rarely stop with one person. In a landmark PNAS study, researchers found that cooperative, generous behavior spreads through social networks up to three degrees of separation, rippling from person to person to person. Each act of giving was roughly tripled as others were influenced to give more. The heartfelt moments below show exactly how quiet kindness may find its way home.

Family is the one gift most of us receive without asking—and its influence reaches further than we tend to notice. The warmth, patience, and everyday compassion we grow up with don't just shape how we feel; they shape how we treat everyone else. In a study of 943 adolescents and their parents published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, researchers found that teens who experienced greater parental warmth tended to feel more gratitude—and that gratitude, in turn, was linked to more kind, prosocial behavior toward others. In other words, the love and empathy a family offers doesn't stay within its walls; it ripples outward into the wider world. The stories below prove exactly that—that family, in all its messy, tender forms, really is life's most cherished gift.

Kindness may seem like a small gesture, but its effects can reach beyond a single moment. And science is measuring just how much that connection matters to us. In a pre-registered experiment published in Brain, Behavior, & Immunity — Health, psychologists asked 230 adults to perform three kind acts each week for four weeks. Here’s the curious part: the people who directed those acts toward others reported feeling noticeably less lonely—and the effect lingered even two weeks after the experiment ended. Kindness given away, it turned out, quietly loosened the grip of isolation on the person doing the giving. That’s the thread running through the 12 moments below. Each one is small enough to overlook and powerful enough to stay with you—proof that compassion and empathy aren’t grand, distant ideals, but everyday expressions of our shared humanity that the human heart carries wherever it goes.
