Study Says That Taller Women Are More Likely to Have Twins

Among the many different factors that can lead to a woman having twins, height is one of the most surprising. Yes, women who are taller than average are more likely to give birth to multiples. An investigation on multiple-birth pregnancies carried out in 2006 has confirmed that taller women are more likely to have twins.
We at Bright Side want to share pregnancy research that explains why this claim is actually feasible. At the end of the article, be sure not to miss the bonus we’ve prepared for you.
Taller women have more of an insulin-like growth factor.
Gary Steinman, an obstetrician who is famous for his research of multiple-birth pregnancies, has described this being due to an insulin-like growth factor, which has been directly connected with both height and twins. The insulin-like growth factor is a hormone that plays an important role in childhood growth.
Height has an influence on the fetus.
During his research, Dr. Steinman compared the heights of 129 women who gave birth to identical or fraternal twins or triplets — 105 had twins and 24 had triplets, with the average height of women in the United States being just under 5’4″. The multiple-birth mothers averaged heights of 5’5″, more than an inch taller than the US average for adult females.
Countries with taller women have higher rates of “twinning”.
Despite the height factor, in his previous study, Steinman found that women who consume animal products, specifically dairy, are 5 times more likely to have twins than those who do not. The reason for this may involve growth hormones that are fed to cows.
