16 Celebrities Who Totally Rock Their Tattoo Game

Tattoos on celebrities can sometimes tell us more about their life than dubious interviews. They just love to celebrate important moments of their lives by creating artwork on their skin. Some pay tribute to their partners by tattooing their names like Johnny Depp did and some declare their love for their favorite food like Ed Sheeran. And some create important reminders on their skin like Kylie Jenner or Selena Gomez.

At Bright Side, we decided to recall the stories behind celebrities’ tattoos and these 15 definitely deserve your attention.

1. Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner

The stars of the cult Game of Thrones franchise, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, celebrated their friendship by getting matching tattoos which read “07.08.2009”. This is the date when girls landed their roles on the show and became on-screen sisters. They’ve been inseparable ever since. That’s a friendship goal we’d all love to achieve!

2. Emilia Clarke

Another Game of Thrones celebrity, Emilia Clarke, paid tribute to her character Daenerys Targaryen by getting a tattoo that features 3 flying dragons. In the series, Daenerys was usually addressed as The Mother of Dragons and Emilia decided to commemorate it. After all, this role made her famous all around the world.

3. Angelina Jolie

However mainstream they are, tattoos that celebrate romantic relationships are still on the top list of celebrity favorite tattoos, even though they don’t always last. Angelina Jolie had to remove her “Billy Bob” tattoo from her shoulder following their split in 2003. She later had it inked over with the geographical coordinates of her children’s birthplaces.

Ironically enough, Jolie had her back tattooed with Buddhist symbols that were supposed to represent her spiritual bond with Brad Pitt only a few months before their marriage came to an end.

4. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp is another star that suffered from an unfortunate love story and had to “ink-out” the consequences. Back in the 1990s, he changed his iconic “Winona Forever” tattoo to a more abstract “Wino Forever” after his break-up with actress Winona Ryder.

In 2015 he got another tattoo celebrating his love with Amber Heard. The writing on his knuckles read “SLIM”, a nickname Heard had. However, the fairytale didn’t last and neither did the ink tribute which now reads “SCUM”.

5. Heidi Klum

Heidi Klum can totally sympathize with Johnny Depp. She had her arm tattooed with 4 stars and an abstract figure which symbolize her husband Seal and their children. After their divorce, Seal disappeared from her life. So did the tattoo.

6. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus’s love story is also quite dramatic, although no titled promises were inked on her skin. After she and her beau Liam Hemsworth got back together 2 years ago, she honored his Australian origin by tattooing a jar of Vegemite, national Australian food spread, on her shoulder. Too bad the stars have just announced they split again.

7. Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran also proved to be a fan of food tattoos, although his love is dedicated to the product itself. The British singer features a bottle of Heinz ketchup on his arm. Sheeran’s obsession has him keeping bottles of ketchup readily available on his tour in case restaurants don’t serve it.

8. Cara Delevingne

Another Brit also declared her love for food. Cara Delevingne has the word “bacon” tattooed on the sole of her right foot. Her left foot is also decorated with some ink that reads, “made in England”.

The former model and actress explained that it represents the treatment models receive in the industry. Delevingne confessed that she felt like a mannequin because of audiences’ attitudes. That’s why she decided to label herself like they do with dolls.

9. Kendall Jenner

Not all celebrities have a conscious approach to their tattoos. Last year, Kendall Jenner suddenly revealed a tattoo on her lip which simply said, “meow”. According to the model, she got tattooed on a whim during a night out with her friends and this was the first thing that came to her mind.

10. Kylie Jenner

Her sister, Kylie Jenner, on the other hand, was more careful with her tattoo decisions. Her first tattoo on her hip reads, “sanity” in transcription as a reminder to keep it every day. The model’s explanation was made in an emotional post, in which she explained how difficult it was to grow up in front of cameras.

Struggling with constant anxiety, Jenner tried hard to stay calm and conscious. And the tattoo was one of the ways she was able to do that.

11. Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez also prefers to keep important personal messages on her skin. One of her first tattoos is in Arabic on her ribs that reads, “Love yourself first.” Another phrase, written in English on her hip, says “God who strengthens me”. The saying was taken from her favorite bible verse.

12. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is another fan of ink reminders. For example, she has recently put a rose on her index finger to celebrate 6 months of sobriety after her struggles with drug abuse. The word “me” on her ring finger is meant to remind her to always love herself first (Selena Gomez can relate). However, some tattoos were just made for fun, like the smile on her pinky.

13. Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande can also share a good laugh over her tattoo. Earlier this year, the singer marked the launch of her new single “7 Rings” by getting similar ink on her palm. She chose to write it in Japanese but made a mistake, and her tattoo literally meant “small charcoal grill”. She later tried to correct the writing but failed again. The latest version reads, “Japanese BBQ finger” according to the Japanese reporter from Buzzfeed.

14. David Beckham

David Beckham wins the award for “cutest daddy ever”. Among his numerous tattoos (one of them even features an image of Christ, inspired by a painting by the Catholic artist Mathew Brooks), there are 2 that he considers most precious because they were designed by his children. A drawing of a little girl on his palm was painted by his only daughter Harper and a hand-written phrase that says, “We love you daddy” was created by his 3 sons, Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz.

15. Victoria Beckham

His famous wife, Victoria Beckham, used to have tattoos as well. The most notorious one was in Hebrew writing on her neck going down the spine that read, “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” She got it back in 2006 but a couple of years ago the ink became almost invisible.

Although the fashion designer has never explained its disappearance, it’s most likely that Beckham removed it because of the new elegant style she adopted over the last few years. Looks like the 4 tattoos she had on her wrists have also gone away for good.

16. Karrueche Tran

American model and actress Karrueche Tran won the day by showing off her unusual tattoo of a zipper that starts at her ankle and goes all the way up to her hip. Although there’s no meaning behind this ink, it still looks cool and creative.

Meaningful or not, these tattoos have definitely put these celebrities in the spotlight. Which of their ideas did you like the most? Would you like to replicate any of their ink? Share what you think in the comments.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s children, despite their parents’ preference for a private life, are making their own strides in the world. From studying at Yonsei University in South Korea to pursuing interests in photography and modeling, these young adults are carving out their own paths.
