10 Moments of Compassion That Remind Us Pets Keep Bringing Out the Best in Humanity

When I was nine, I collected bottle caps in a shoebox and sorted them by color on the kitchen table while my mom slept after her night shift. One evening she took a blue one to work for luck and put it back in the box the next morning without a word. These 10 kids take their collections even more seriously, with labels, rules and museums.
“I started shooting the objects my daughter collects on our walks.”
We carry a small bucket. I got tired of having dandelions in my pockets.
I plan on making a small book to share with her at the very least.
“My daughter (5) wanted to go looking for gemstones at the beach. How did we do? We are new, but very excited.”
These are our best of the best out of 100 or so. We have no idea what we are looking at but they sure are pretty.
We stayed at the beach for probably 3-4 hours and really only searched a 20ft radius, I’d say.
All the large ones are picked often but if you get into the thicker sections and start moving rocks around there’s lots in the layers underneath.
“My Four Year Old Son’s Treasure Drawer”
Those are too big for the drawer, we keep our finest sticks in the garage.
From the author:
My bottle caps had rules. Blue on the left, red on the right, and anything with writing on it in a separate row I called the important ones. I sorted them in the afternoons, quietly, because my mom was asleep down the hall after her shift. The rules were all mine. Keeping it quiet was the only one she ever added.
“My 9yr old’s rock collection.”
Top is fossils primarily except for a couple of them, second is crystals or have something crystalline about them, third is kind of a mix of everything while he sorts out his last couple bags and a shoe box.
He’s still got a shoe box or two full plus the bags on the bottom shelf to sort through. He’s not interested in a particular rock or mineral he just loves geology and collects all that he can. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come home with pockets full he’s found lol.
He found it in one of his boxes of rocks and thought it was funny so now it’s an honorary member of his rock collection.
“Everything my child brought home in his pockets throughout the school year”
All the erasers (almost everything actually) was found on the playground. everything came surrounded by dry leaves
there were SO many rocks, sticks, and leaves! they’re in a separate bag, this was the “cool” stuff haha
there’s been more than a few times where he forgot to empty his pockets and at best, there’d be wads of paper or leaves and sticks mixed in with the clothes. 3 times i’ve had clothes come out with multicolored stripes from melted bits or crayon
hahaha i have called him a little human raccoon many times
“Finally built a stuffy jail to wrangle my daughters collection.”
Took a couple of hours and now things are all off the floor!
She crawled in it with the stuffies when I first put it together.
From the author:
The shoebox lived under my bed, and I counted the caps every night, so I knew the blue one was gone before she put it back. I never asked, and she never explained. Kids think their collections are private. Parents usually know exactly what’s in the box, and they’re careful not to say so.
“My Daughter knows I like rocks so she brings me random rocks every day”
The heart shaped rock she gave me stays in my car.
We have a huge rock collection that we have found together. These are just the ones from her pocket that she saved for me.
“After showing this subreddit to my 7 year old son, he wanted to share his collection with everyone here.”
From the author:
Years later, my mom told me why she borrowed that blue cap: she had a long night ahead and wanted something of mine in her pocket. She still slips small things into her coat before a hard day. Kids collect things to keep them. Parents borrow from the collection for the same reason.
“While going through my old rock collection my son found this polished rock that I begged my parents for back in 2000.”
It was a nice rush of nostalgia of me at one of my first rock and gem shows, 11 years old. Then I saw this...
“Found my 20 year old stick collection visiting parents.”
I was surprised. They were in the corner near the tools. Gave them a few swings and a few memories came flooding back. Good times.
Second to left was my “Mage staff” Middle was my unga bunga 2 hander.
The sticks in the last story spent twenty years in a corner by the tools, and their owner still knew which one was the mage staff. A kid’s collection looks like clutter until you hear what each piece was for, and the kid always remembers.
What did you collect as a kid, and do you still have it? Tell us in the comments.
