13 Home Repair Pros Who Have Seen Everything — and Still Got Startled by a Barking Parrot

A stranger with a toolbox rings the bell, and for the next few hours they know your home better than most of your friends do. They see it under considerably more honest conditions. What’s behind the walls, under the floors, inside the ceilings.

These 13 home repair stories, full of humor, kindness, and family life seen from the inside, come from the pros who show up when something breaks and stay for the story.

  • I service intercom systems. I got a call: the sound on someone’s handset hadn’t been working for a week. Well, these things happen, so I went over to check it out.
I arrive, and the homeowner opens the door. Suddenly her expression changes. “Oh,” she says. Then, a little embarrassed, she explains that the kids had accidentally turned off the sound on the handset, and she had just noticed.

  • Once, a customer called: her water heater wouldn’t turn on. I asked, “Did you install the battery correctly?” She confidently replied, “Of course! I’m not that bad.” All right, so I went over.
I opened the compartment and took a look. I repositioned the battery according to the polarity, and the water heater started working right away. I charged the minimum service fee and headed to my next call.

  • I once came over to fix a kitchen faucet. Suddenly, I heard barking from the next room and jumped in surprise. The homeowner said, “Don’t worry, I don’t have a dog.” So who was barking?
She smiled and brought out a large gray parrot perched on her hand. While I worked, the parrot recited lines from some TV show.

  • I’m a female plumber. A woman called me in for a job at her apartment. As soon as her husband saw me, he said, “I can handle it myself.” His wife smirked: “Sure, you’ve been handling it yourself for 3 days now.”
Without a word, I fixed everything. The husband handed me a big tip and sheepishly asked, “Tell my wife I was telling you what to do, or she’ll never let me hear the end of it!”
Bright Side
  • I’ve been doing renovations for over 20 years, and I’ve seen all kinds of quirky clients.
Anyway, it was summer, and I’d planned a 3-night fishing trip with my friends. Meanwhile, I had a client’s kitchen to work on. I told her, “First thing, go find the company that will be making your kitchen cabinets. The outlet placement and backsplash height depend on that.” “Sure, sure,” she said, nodding along.
We started the demolition, removed the old kitchen furniture and refrigerator, and began taking up the flooring. My fishing trip was the next day, so I left my partner, Sammy, in charge and said, “Make it right. I’ll be back in 3 days.”
When I returned, Sammy seemed a little off. We went over to the apartment, and as soon as we walked in, the client started shouting. Turns out that she hadn’t chosen kitchen furniture yet! But the backsplash height depends on the kitchen manufacturer. So Sammy had started placing it at the standard height. I asked her:
    “Have you chosen the furniture?”
    “No.”
“Did you give us the height?”
    “No.” (She was actually yelling.)
“Then what exactly do you want? That we’d be waiting for you to make your choice for a month and rearrange our whole schedule because of you?”
We got dressed and left. Friends later told me she had someone else finish the job, and they charged her twice as much and took twice as long. And in the photo below, that’s the kitchen I made for my mother-in-law.
  • My assistant and I arrived at a house that looked pretty cozy from the outside. Inside, there were boxes of stuff literally everywhere you turned.
My assistant couldn’t help herself and asked the homeowner, “Did you just move in?” He was quiet for a couple of seconds, then said sheepishly, “We’ve lived here for 10 years.” After that, I told my assistant never to ask clients that kind of question again.

  • I’m a plumber. My neighbor asked me to help her: water was dripping from a pipe somewhere in her bathroom. The previous plumber had no idea where it was coming from.
I found the leak — it turned out to be right beneath the ceiling. I don’t know how, but she found out it was my birthday and gave me a cake with a crown and the words: “King of Leaks.” I have a good sense of humor, so I loved it.
Another time, I stayed late at a client’s place, and they treated me to dinner. It smelled so delicious that I simply had to accept.

  • I worked as a mover. Went into someone’s house and everything was pink. Floor, walls, ceiling, furniture, their clothing, etc. Except their bedroom, that was lime green.
  • We needed to make flower beds: remove soil in some places, add more in others, and level everything out. I told the client that my partner and I could get it done in 2 days. We agreed on the payment.
We started working, and the client came over and said, “I don’t like the way you work. You talk on the phone, chat with each other, and don’t give the work your full attention.” I said, “Sorry, but we have an agreement: we will complete the job in 2 days, and you will pay us. Whether I’m talking on the phone or not is none of your business.”
She said, “Then goodbye. I don’t need people who won’t follow my directions.” After us, it took 3 weeks for someone to make her flower beds — 3 weeks! Every day for 21 days, she was looking for workers in the group chat we were in. Out of 42 people, not a single one was good enough for her.
  • I’m a woman, and I worked as a handyman for a few years. Customers could choose by photo on the website, so a lot of them requested me specifically. Most of my calls came from older women who felt awkward or a little nervous about letting a man they didn’t know into their home.
  • I was a visiting nurse and went to a patient’s house that was filled with clocks. I’m talking clocks everywhere. Clocks on the wall, clocks on the mantel, grandfather clocks, cuckoo clocks, nautical clocks, desktop clocks, even little pocket watches on his side table... every type of ticking clock you could imagine, this guy had.
He was in his eighties and spent his days winding up and tinkering with all his clocks. Some of them were really quite beautiful actually. But yeah, clocks! I’ve never seen anything like it, and I’ve seen a lot.
  • I got called to fix a washing machine. I walked into the apartment, and the owners turned out to be my old classmate and his wife.
Back in school, he always looked down on me. All because I was a C student and went to trade school, while he got a college degree. Now he’s a manager at a bank.
As for the washing machine, he’d tried to fix it himself first but couldn’t. From what I gathered, he and his wife had even gotten into a fight over it.
Anyway, 2 minutes later, the washing machine was back to life. He asked, “How much?” I calmly said, “$150.” He looked at me, then at his wife, completely lost. All his arrogance had vanished. I smiled and headed off to my next job.
Bright Side
  • My neighbor teaches at a university. She knows I install tile and asked for a neighborly discount. Fine, I agreed and tiled her bathroom.
Then I walk out of the apartment and see her coming downstairs with a friend, telling her that she had installed the tile herself! Like, how could she — a university professor — not figure out something that simple on her own? Fine, I thought.
The next time she asks me to do something for her, I’ll charge a whole lot more.

The pipe gets fixed, the light comes back on, and what’s left is the story. Repair pros see the same thing again and again: people are a little embarrassed about what’s broken, and a lot grateful when someone fixes it without making a fuss. What’s the best repair story you’ve been part of? Tell us in the comments.
