10 Moments That Teach Us Kindness Is Still the Quiet Superpower That Rebuilds Broken Hearts

The tire shop across from the warehouse where I worked nights had a cat named Lug Nut, who slept on the register and outranked the owner. Half the drivers on my shift stopped there for air they did not need. These 10 shop cats run their businesses the same way, and regulars come back for them.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, Oscar the Truck Repair Cat has your quote ready”
Oscar was born in the woodpile out the back of the factory as a stray with his two siblings our family set traps to catch them so we could make sure they got adopted out and didn’t have to struggle/ reduce the stray cat population ... but Oscar was too smart for the traps and lived in our roof and upper storage area for a year before being bribed, cautiously approached and shown enough affection and trust by my wife and father in law
Now he runs the place and is no longer a stray being chipped and looked after. He is a successful businesscat and the chief Napping officer
He is quite playful, but he def can play rough .... my wife has basically forced him to love her
“The candy shop I went to has a cat that just roams the shop”
Say hi to ginger
the cat was the reason I went XD
oh apparently there’s a bird that is there too that mimics the cat so it meows
“My work has a shop cat named Bob! He is very nosey.”
Boss man says the next person to give him a snacky-treat gets to go on break.
He sometimes struggles with invading our personal space. He is a very clingy little boy in the morning.
He loves cuddles! But he is very squirmy if you try to pick him up.
From the author:
Lug Nut took over the register around 10 p.m., which was when our shift took its first break. The tire shop stayed open late for truckers, and the cat slept on the keypad, so the owner rang people up around him. I never once saw him move for a customer. Plenty of us still found a reason to check our tire pressure twice a week.
“Someone wrapped up the cat at my local garden shop and left their jacket.”
I asked the people at the shop and they don’t know who’s jacket it is. The cat is named Liam and lives there. He has a cat door for full time access to the indoor shop and is spoiled by the whole surrounding neighborhood. I’ve worked next door for six years and always take time to go pet the cat.
Apparently the guy who lives in the neighborhood came back a few hours after and got his jacket back....poor Liam now clothless lol
“She cleared a four-year mouse problem in three days. The owner remodeled the floor to match her.”
I’ve been documenting NYC’s bodega cats for the last few years. Layla is one of the best mousers I’ve found.
She works at a bodega in the Financial District (NYC). The store had been closed for four years.
The owner brought her in. Within three days, the mice were gone. He hasn’t seen one since.
When the contractor asked what color tile he wanted, he pointed at his cat.
“The owner calls him the cat with thumbs. This Hell’s Kitchen bodega cat has worked the same store for four years, his paws are the size of catcher’s mitts.”
Oreo has worked the same bodega on 9th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen for four years. He came from a home where things didn’t work out, ended up at the store, and never left. The owner says customers cross the street specifically to see those paws — he grips the counter edge with them when you reach down to pet him. He tolerates people well but will give you a warning bite if you push it. Ask me how I know.
From the author:
Ray, my shift lead, claimed he did not like cats. He also left a bag of cat treats on the tire shop counter every payday without saying a word. When I asked him about it, he said Lug Nut had better attendance than half our crew. That was about as close as Ray ever came to a compliment.
“My local hardware store has a shop cat. The shop cat has an office!”
I don’t know how much other business Marley brings in, but I’ve been a dedicated customer since I first saw her!
“Our shop cats, Oingo & Boingo, finding some Zzzz’s in the A’s here in our record store.”
They’re weirdly great with the records, but they steal necklaces and they love attacking any sort of hanging price tag. Thankfully our staff and awesome customers keep them fully stocked with their own toys.
They live in the shop, but we are open 7 days a week and we are there early in the morning until about 7pm each night. It’s basically the opposite of leaving your pet at home during the day when you go to work.
When people ask to buy them we let them know they are 4 million dollars apiece, must be paid for in cash, and must be sold together.
“A woman rearranges her commute to sit on the floor with this bodega cat for ten minutes everyday”
When we walked in, a woman was already sitting on the floor.
Work clothes still on. Bags next to her. Delilah, in front of her like this, was a standing appointment.
The owner said it happens all the time. People come in, find the cat, and sit for a few minutes before going back outside.
Some cats sell snacks. Some cats make people stop rushing.
She came from Morocco as a kitten and ended up running a Manhattan bodega like she has appointments to keep. The owner was not surprised by the woman on the floor. Apparently, people do this with her all the time.
From the author:
A practical note if you run a small shop and are thinking about a cat: decide on day one who feeds it, and put it in writing. The tire shop owner wrote Lug Nut’s breakfast on the same clipboard as the opening checklist, right under “unlock bay doors.” In six years of night shifts, I never once saw that line skipped.
“His name is Corky and he’s a local bookstore cat and he’s a handsome guy. Been stopping in to visit him for many years. Thought he’d like to say hi to everyone.”
Lots of kids draw pictures of him and bring them in as gifts and they hang them up. Such a wonderful place.
In a small shop, the cat is the one employee who never takes a vacation, never calls in sick and never asks for a raise. Customers notice. They come in for a soda or a used paperback and leave having said hello to someone who was there the last time too.
Is there a shop cat or store dog you visit more than the store itself? Tell us in the comments.
