10 Moments of Compassion That Remind Us Pets Keep Bringing Out the Best in Humanity

Every November my grandmother plants a handful of daffodil bulbs somewhere she does not tell anyone about, then waits to see who notices in April. Last spring it was the mail carrier, who stopped his truck to ask. These 11 people planted flowers for someone, or behind someone’s back, and months later the flowers said what they never did.
“My dad’s garden. He has gotten to the point where he now has to sneak in new plants and little statues so my mum doesn’t tell him off for hoarding!”
I think she’s more of a utalitarian — she has no problems with the herbs and fruit trees we have growing!
And I think it’s the fact that the taller plants are starting to block the light that’s coming into her kitchen...
This garden took my dad 15 years to get together...every weekend he’s up at 6am and scouting the local markets for second hand plants and seeds.
It sounds zen when the fountains are on and the birds are chirping. The fruits taste great too!
My dad loves visitors.
There was a man who knocked on our door trying to sell us something...my dad invited him into the garden and I don’t think he left until a while after!
“Nursery closed, my partner surprised me with ALL of their hostas!!!”
Best gift ever. They can all be divided into 2 or 3, so I’m in Hosta Heaven.
These were a surprise, I didn’t ask for them. They’re from North Carolina. There are 350 pots and he spent $2,500.
I’ve divided each pot into 2 to 3 generous divisions. We have a river front property that we allow public to access during the daytime, so we’ve been planting a ton there.
I’ve gifted a lot of the hostas, to hosta lovers!
I’m propogating the rest and selling them, too. I’ll make some money back, but it was his decision.
“My retired Mum likes to sneak into our garden whilst we’re at work and do some gardening. Yesterday she came unannounced to plant some daffodil bulbs and left this calling card.”
From the author:
My grandmother never tells anyone where this year’s daffodils went in. She plants them on a gray afternoon in November, writes nothing down and lets the leaves fall on top, since she has never once raked a leaf to the curb. By March she starts finding reasons to walk the long way to the mailbox. She says she is checking the weather.
“Tulips!!”
My husband thought I was crazy when I told him I planted 100 tulip bulbs in our front garden bed. Could not be more pleased with how it turned out
Zone 6a. Planted them the third week of October, and they started blooming about a week ago!
“Whenever my wife gets the mail, she comes back grinning :)”
I actually asked our mail person if it was a nuisance. She said no, she loves it as long as I keep the vines cut back a bit from the mailbox opening so she can access it.
My clem is actually pretty lowkey compared to some of the spectacular displays I’ve seen on here. I just bought it bareroot from a nursery for $5 three years ago
“When your Dad is your gardener”
We have a problem.
Sweet Portuguese lady was outside watering her flowers next-door and I pointed to our plant and asked her if she could water it since her hose was out and I was running late for a call
Cut to a couple hours later on the camera, we see her taking the plant and now she has it and thought I was giving it to her for some reason she always takes care of our porch and I don’t have the heart to ask for the plant back 😭
Dad: I have another pot and will bring another plant... lovely gift for her. Xoxo
I just thought it was sweet of him since he worked so hard to find a plant for our front yard
“today I was gifted over 300 daffodil bulbs”
Our elderly neighbor is moving away and really wants us to have them. definitely a sentimental gift!
From the author:
The mail carrier who spotted them last spring had driven past her house for years. That April he stopped at the end of the drive and asked whether the yellow ones by the ditch were hers. She told him she couldn’t say for sure. She says he slows down at that ditch now, even when nothing is blooming.
“Surprising my boyfriend with a proper front garden!”
It was such hard work, but I know he’ll be super happy so it was worth it :) He comes home tomorrow night and I’m so excited for him to see it!!
He finally got to see it and he was blown away!! His reaction was 100% worth it all. He absolutely loves it and is so appreciative. We had a wonderful weekend and spent lots of time on the front lawn admiring all the beautiful colors!
“Please help me give my mum her flowers, so to speak”
I’m getting married tomorrow in my parents garden, the offer for us to hold the celebration here was already incredible but since we agreed this late last year my Mum who works a day job has been working a second job here at the house turning this place into a show garden. I’ve been told by my brother who lives here that she’s up and out in the mornings before 6:30 working on the space and again until dark, been this way for months.
I’ve thanked her again and again and repeatedly asked her to not worry about it and that it’s perfect as is but she’s a woman on a mission. She’s relatively new to gardening seriously (!) and I wanted to show off her efforts to the world.
Special shout out to my Dad too who’s been losing sleep over the lawn that was 50% demolished by leather jackets last year, now on his hands and knees trimming edges with scissors.
I love them both so much and know just how lucky I am to have them as parents
“My friend recently became a UK citizen and her neighbour cleaned up her garden and planted these red, white and blue flowers while she was at work, without her knowing.”
From the author:
Grandma keeps her bulbs the way she keeps her seeds, in old electric-bill envelopes with one word in pencil. The daffodil envelope just says “later.” I used to think that was shorthand. Now I think it is the whole idea. You put something in the ground in November and spend the winter being the only one who knows.
Good morning wide world. Good morning Johannesburg. Good morning freesias in the lavender. My daughter secretly planted bulbs in my herb pots. Every year when they come up, they take me by surprise and delight me.
A bulb is the only gift that waits underground all winter while the person who gave it says nothing. The daughter in the last story planted hers years ago, and her mother still gets surprised every single time.
Have you ever planted something for someone and waited for them to notice? Tell us in the comments.
