10 Airline Moments That Teach Us the Best Things We Pack for Travel Are Kindness and Compassion

There is a photo in my parents’ hallway of my three older sisters and me squeezed onto one porch step in matching Easter dresses, me on the end, falling off. Last spring we tried to recreate it, and the step had not gotten any bigger. These 11 sets of siblings recreated their childhood photos decades later, and every one of them had to fold grown-up knees into a kid-size pose.
“My sister got married over the weekend, so we recreated this gem from our childhood.”
We were also a little pressed for time with this. They did a first look and wedding guests were about to start arriving any minute. We took a few attempts and I’ll assume this is the best one, as it was a preview share from the photographer.
My sister is beautiful.
[Someone told the bride about this post, and she was excited.] That’s awesome to hear! I’m a photographer as well, so thank you for reporting back about it to her! I haven’t had a chance to yet, but you did so that works. It’s all about keeping everyone in the loop.
Three sisters born on the same day, and one mum who once held all three of them at once. For her birthday, they took out the old family photos and stepped back into them: three babies in her lap, then three little girls in matching yellow tops. Same poses, same mum, many birthdays later.
“Today is our mum’s birthday..Happy birthday mum..We love you”
“Recreated my mom’s favorite photo of us for Mother’s Day”
[Mom still had the same clothes?] That’s actually how I thought of the idea.
She looked at the picture and told me she still owned the shirt.
[The sweatshirt?] Unfortunately, they don’t just have these on the rack. I had to use photoshop to get the art off of the original picture and recreate it with a custom sweatshirt site.
[Why the frown?] I think a big part of it is that I’m scrunching my face to look like the baby picture, which sort of gave a Robert DeNiro frown vibe.
[Missing the zigzag frame?] My biggest regret.
“My brothers’ and my gift for my parents: A 12-page calendar of recreated photos”
It was a lot of work.
The funny thing about the keys on the belt was.. I was studying everything carefully.. and then I notice, hanging on my brothers keys is a tamagotchi! I had completely forgotten about the existence of those things and it blew my mind, in a nostalgic kind of way.
I found a lot of clothes at thrift stores.
My goal is to recreate that one again in our 30’s and 40’s and I WILL have my splits then too!
We don’t have many [childhood photos] from before I was 8, (when we moved to the US), but we have plenty from after.
As girls, the sisters lined up for a photo and pulled the most dramatic faces they could. Years later they lined up in the same order and did it again, down to the tilted heads and the wide-open mouths. Amy still calls it one of her favorite pictures ever.
“I love this picture soooo much it was so fun to recreate it with my sisters omg.”
“My siblings and I recreated this photo from our youth. Circa 91”
[On the matching calves:] Our family is the same. Our father has bullet proof calves.
That’s flattering, we’re definitely not jacked at all. We just have broad shoulders in the men in our family.
[On finding a photo worth recreating:] It’s super random, the photos that last and are worthy to recreate.
[Someone suggested holding their own kids on their laps.] Where were you with this idea when we were taking the photo? Missed opportunity for sure.
[About the haircut on the left:] My barber at this age was my aunt Holly. I’ll have to ask her.
When they were little, Valentina wore a white dress and her brother Luca put on a tie, sunglasses and a big grin for a photo in the garden. Years later they found the same kind of dress, a skinny tie and dark glasses, stood under a tree and copied the pose down to the hand on the shoulder. He even kept the sunglasses.
“Io e mio fratello ricreiamo la foto di quando eravamo piccoli [My brother and I recreate the photo from when we were little]”
“Our parents are moving from our childhood home, had to recreate this to say goodbye.”
We tried to match our facial expressions from the first pic. But our expressions kinda match the personalities we grew into if that makes sense.
[A great place to grow up?] It was great. The tire swing and tree house made for a classic childhood. I’ll miss the big yard, garden, and privacy of the country most.
[The story behind the socks and boots?] I’m not sure if there’s a story other than that our parents let us dress ourselves. The socks may have been so feet wouldn’t get dirty, boots for practicality, and who doesn’t love toe socks?
For their mom’s birthday the siblings didn’t buy a present. They found an old studio portrait, got everyone back in front of a backdrop, matched the poses, dog included, framed the new version and handed it over. Then they filmed her unwrapping it.
“Best birthday surprise for our mom”
Amy pulled out the old family photos and talked her brother into recreating them for their mom, matching shirts and all. He could barely contain his excitement, at least according to her captions. Mom opened the album at the dining table, laughing, and she may or may not have been talking about how his hairline no longer matches the original.
“No brother was harmed in the making of this. I swear he had fun”
“1984 and 2013 — 29 years later, my brothers and I recreated our family vacation photo at the Texas State Capitol”
[How long did the clothes take?] Weeks. It took time and effort. We had to fudge the tank tops to make them work.
Considering the high compression of the older photo, I kinda gave up after a while and just wanted to make sure the lighting on our faces was better since we didn’t use any flash. And a little contrast, temperature adjustments.
[Where did you find them?] The internet is your friend.
You can copy the pose down to the tilt of the head and the stripes on a tank top, but you can’t copy the years in between, and that’s the whole point. The brothers at that fence came back 29 years taller, and the photo knows it.
