12 Animal Shelter Moments That Teach Us Why Every Life Deserves a Second Chance

It only takes a few seconds to turn a sad shelter dog into the happiest dog ever — by choosing to adopt. Every adoption is an act of kindness. Every person who shows up makes a difference, showing that they believe everyone deserves love equally. These 12 heartfelt moments of compassion remind us what it looks like to give someone love, when they can’t really ask for it.

  • A dog arrived at our shelter in Ohio with no microchip, no ID tag. But he clearly belonged to someone. We figured he just got lost. I began posting photos on every lost pet group I could find.
    A month went by. No luck. The dog looked more and more sad every day, missing his family. It broke my heart. People came by, looked at him, and usually went for a younger pup.
    After around 3 months or so, I couldn’t take it and just brought him home lol. I didn’t have a big space but I figured it was still bigger and warmer than the shelter.
    This was 4 years ago. His name is Charlie and he’s my best boy. I love him so much.

  • My family walked by the kitty adoption center in our local PetSmart while we were shopping one day. The volunteer was cleaning their cages so I went in to pet them because they were all running around. They were all very cute but a particularly friendly orange one named Buddy caught my heart.
    My mom came in to pet him at this point because I gave her puppy dog eyes through the window. She thought he was sweet too, but she didn’t want another cat because we’d just lost a kitty a few months prior.
    As we were leaving, a family with small children came in and the little girls pointed at Buddy saying how cute she was. Their mom agreed but as she read his info card she said, “Oh no, not him, he’s 10,” and then went to look at the younger orange cats.
    We got him the next day. That was over a year ago and since then we found out he’s closer to 15 years old... I don’t think he’ll be around for much longer. I’m glad we got the chance to be with him even if it’s only for a year or two.
  • We were the third owners of our dog, and she just didn’t warm up to anyone. We brought her home, and for over a year she wouldn’t even look at us when we came in the door.
    We had to coax her outside for walks with meat treats, we had to hug her when we washed her to stop her shaking, we had to let her know it was okay to eat and give her lots of time to get through it.
    She’s 8 now, and a different dog. She trots up to me when I get home and leans on me for a huge cuddle (she weighs about 80lb, it’s the best), she nose bumps me just to remind me she’s here if I haven’t paid her enough attention, she loves kids, all other animals and people of every walk of life.
    Under all those nerves and fears of being left behind, she was the world’s greatest ever dog waiting to be uncovered. I wish I could have 30 more years with her. These last 6 have gone by way too fast.

We adopted an 11-year old cat from a Chicago shelter. He and my 13-yo daughter fell in love. This is them after she got back from a week at camp.

  • My parents adopted a 6-year-old Jack Russell who “couldn’t be with dogs, cats and kids.” We had another dog, there were 4 kids and a cat.
    Don’t get me wrong, my dad has been raising dogs his whole life and knows that if you give them time it’ll be alright. They’re not born nasty or unadoptable.
    She had been fighting with dogs at her previous home and it later turned out her previous owner used to be really mean to her. It took a year to fully adjust to the kids, she has NEVER ever been aggressive towards us. Just scared and we weren’t allowed to touch her.
    After a year she learned she could trust us and completely opened up. My other dog basically taught her how to be a dog: how to play, how to bury her pee outside, how to play fetch.
    It all turned out amazing. She’s 18 years old now and still with us. She is amazing and incredibly sweet and loving.
  • We lived in a more naturey area outside a suburb where a lot of people had horses and chickens and goats, etc. We went to the local animal shelter and my mom decided we were going to adopt a dog named Spawn who was taken there because he kept harming his owners’ chickens.
    My mom thought, “Well, we don’t have any chickens,” and brought him home. He was the best dog we ever had; walked right next to you without a leash, protected you and the other animals but was still gentle and loving.
    He even fought a snake right before it was about to lunge at and bite our other dog, but he also let me use him as a pillow and sleep on him. He lived until he was 15. A very good boy indeed.

Walked into the shelter and asked which cat had been there the longest... came home with a deaf, toothless senior lovebug. Meet Cali!

  • A woman in her late 60s came to our animal shelter. Straight away, she goes, “I’m not interested in puppies. I’ve had a long life, and I’m looking for like-minded company.” It actually made some of us laugh.
    We introduced her to a 13-year-old beagle named Earl. He had bad hips and slept a lot. No one who came took a liking to him, he was deemed “boring.” The woman immediately went, “Perfect! Let’s go home buddy.”
    It was love at first sight for them. She sent a photo 3 months later of the two of them on a porch. The note said he slept at the foot of her bed every night and she hadn’t slept that well in years.

  • Snuggled next to my handsome, lightly snoring chocolate lab as I type one handed. Had him for about 2 years now, he’s the most perfect, gentle creature. He’s also blind. But he’s easy to care for, easier than my other, sighted dog.
    When I found him (a spur-of-the-moment encounter) in a rural county shelter several years ago, he was a mess. Someone likely dumped him by the side of the road — an unfortunate common happening in that area — and, thankfully, a good citizen brought him to the shelter.
    Hardly likely to be adopted, for he was frantic in his holding pen, non-stop barking, and...blind. And a senior, about 8 years old. I had a lot going on in my life then, and thought myself crazy for even considering taking on this train wreck.
    But there was something about this dog. So I asked to get him out of the pen, to see how he’d do outside on leash. After about 2 minutes, he calmed down, and I knew he’d be fine.
    Got him healthy, and from day one he’s been the best. In 2 years, never once growled at anyone or anything. We enjoy our long walks every morning. I love this old dog.

After 9 months in shelters, he needs to know I love him every 10 minutes. Welcome to the family dude.

  • When I was about 5, my parents adopted a young mutt, Daisy, that had been returned to the SPCA many times, I believe because she was an escape artist. We were her last chance family.
    She did escape the yard/dog run quite a bit, I remember her showing up at the school I went to a few times. She was such a good, loving, and playful dog though.
    A year later my parents decided to move to the country and have a farm, so the dog got to live her entire life roaming around our big acreage. She went on many adventures with us kids. In her golden years she stuck close to the house, but I know she had an amazing life.
  • We adopted a senior German Shepherd. He was unusually quiet. Then one day he wouldn’t stop barking at my 2yo daughter. No matter what.
    We dropped him back at the shelter. My baby kept crying, didn’t sleep at all. I couldn’t point out what was wrong.
    Next day I froze when I checked the cameras. He was positioned between my daughter and the space heater behind the TV stand, barking every time she crawled toward it. Over and over. For hours.
    We had been so focused on the noise that we had never once looked at what he was looking at. My daughter had been reaching for that heater repeatedly whenever we weren’t watching. He had known.
    He had been doing the only thing he could do to tell us and we had called it a behavior problem and driven him back. I felt so bad and ashamed. I called the shelter right away. The staff member who answered listened to the whole thing. Told me he was still there.
    I drove there immediately. He came out and sat in front of me and I put my hand on his head and just said I was sorry, crying like an idiot. He leaned into it. That was the whole reunion.
    He’s been with us for 3 years. He sleeps at the foot of my daughter’s bed. She calls him her “big boi dog.” She’s not wrong. He was protecting her like a big brother.
