10 Moments That Teach Us Kindness Is Still the Quiet Superpower That Rebuilds Broken Hearts

My mom started a temperature blanket one January and quit in February because, in her words, the weather wasn’t giving her enough colors. The 59 gray rows are now a scarf. These 10 crochet temperature blankets, a scarf and a cardigan made it through a whole year of weather, and their makers explain the color charts, the hottest days and the deadlines they almost missed.
“21-year Temperature Blanket”
Just finished a 21-year crocheted temperature blanket. Each strip is one year. Each 6-stitch row in each strip is one day. Colors are max temperature for each day. We lived in 4 different US states. This commemorates our married years so far. Some mistakes were made, but I love how it turned out.
It was the brown that got to me. There is beauty in the desert, but I love a green landscape, which is why I’m now in Tennessee.
“An homage to 2023 (a temperature blanket)”
I was trying to base the color of the leaf off of what color they would be in nature at that temperature. So colder temps tend to be the fall leaf colors. Warmer temps the leafs are lush and green, unless it’s too warm. Then they are brown and crispy.
The leafs with white borders represent the first day of each month, which helps with tracking where you are at in the year. You will see a couple leafs with different colored borders representing special days of the year to me, the border color represents the lowest temp of that day.

2024 granny square temperature blanket is complete! It may be slightly larger than I anticipated!
I made it simple and did 30 days per month. This year was a leap year so I rolled Jan 31 into the first day of February and then did the 29 remaining days of February. After that I just did 30 rounds for each month!

Mom’s problem, she told me later, wasn’t the colors. It was the honesty. A temperature blanket won’t let you skip a gloomy week or make July a little cooler. Hers had 59 gray rows in a row, and she took that personally. The people on this list agreed in January to whatever the year would bring.
“I just finished a birth year temperature scarf for my daughter!”
I am lucky that my daughter was born in a leap year as I’m not sure what I would have done if I had 365 flowers. With 366 it worked easily (45×8 + 6).
I used the average temperature of each day and made a colorful flower for her birthday. She loves it 🥰
I wasn’t joining the flowers until the very end, so this project was really comfortable to carry around. I did a lot of it while being in the passenger seat of our car (with my husband driving).
“I finished my 2025 temperature blanket!”
I needed something more engaging than rows and this little spiral hexagon motif was so fun.
The two colors in each spiral are the low and the high temperature for each day
I actually made two and gifted one to my mom as a surprise
“2022 Temperature Blanket (Now Wall Hanging)”
My mother finished her 2022 temperature blanket, but measuring and having a plan are not family specialities 😅. The end blanket was barely big enough for a person and far too long. So as a substitute it’s become a wall hanging for their hallway.
My dad measured out the frame and built wooden rectangle for it, and they stapled the blanket to it. Not fancy but hey it works!

I have more of this color, but I didn’t wanna use the new roll for 3 sts 😅
This is a temperature blanket for my mom’s anniversary....just got halfway finished and her anniversary is in 1 1/2 weeks 😂
From the author:
Mom’s scarf of 59 gray rows hangs on the hook by her front door. Since pottery class, Mom counts everything, so she knows it is exactly 59 days long, January 1 to the last day of February. She wears it on the grayest days of winter, because, she says, that’s the only time it matches.
“It’s finally finished! My birth year temperature blanket! June 1993-May 1994 🥰”
I went into making this knowing I’d want to make matching ones for any future kiddos 🤩
I think I would haunt my descendants if they got rid of this thing lol
“Hourly temperature blanket”
I finished my 2022 behemoth of a project, with hourly temperatures!! Python script —> Excel spreadsheet pattern —> finished blanket🌈
It was a simple back loop only single crochet, with a front post double on the hour boundaries. I did a row of double crochets at the start of each month too, with a single crochet ruffle border:)
“2023 Temperature Blanket”
I finally finished this, I’m really happy with how it turned out! I didn’t get to use the red, so I’ve adjusted my range for this year to hopefully include all of the colors I’ve chosen.
I won 4th place for this at the county fair- it was only done through the beginning of August then.
“I finished my temperature cardigan!!!”
Year and a half later, it’s finally done!
The body represents the high temperatures for each day of the year. The sleeves (and the reverse side of the body) represent the low temperatures.
It’s the most work intensive and least practical thing I have ever made in my life. I love it and have no idea what I’m going to do with it.
It grew a bit in the blocking, so now it’s a tad too long. But I need all 366 rows, so that’s just how it’s going to have to be.
“If I don’t post it now I never will! Completed temperature blanket of my son’s first year.”
Actually completed this a few months ago and took these photos then, but never got around to posting it! This tracks from my son’s birth to his first birthday, starting in May 2023. Each square is 1.5 days, tracking the daily high & daily low. I started making the blanket in January 2024 and finished it in October.
The last blanket on this list starts on the day a son was born, and none of the weather in it would make the news. That is the point: nobody remembers the weather of an ordinary year, but the blanket does. Mom says she might try again, in a year with more sunshine.
If you made a temperature blanket, which year would you choose? Tell us in the comments.
