12 Lost Cats and Dogs Who Came Home, Like a Chihuahua Found by Her Microchip After 12 Years

At the shelter where I volunteered, the microchip scanner lived in the front desk drawer next to the treats. Every stray met it first, and we all held our breath for the beep. These 12 cats and dogs went missing for weeks or even years, and a microchip, a neighbor or a stubborn owner finally brought them home.

Months of Lost Cat Signs, and Then the One That Said Chester Is Home

“After seeing these signs for months, I finally found some good news on my walk today!”

A Chipped Stray, 3 Months Missing and 60 Miles From Home

“A stray showed up at work. We took her to a vet, turns out she’s chipped and has been missing from home for 3 months! Her mama is on the way to pick her up. I got to help reunite a family today!”

She was about 60 miles from home.

We think it’s possible she hitch hiked on a truck that made a delivery

I left her at the vets, her family will pick her up from there. The doctor didn’t think to ask her name. I wish she had, I would have really liked to have known her real name.

Flor the Chihuahua, Back With Her Family 12 Years After She Disappeared

Flor, a chihuahua, disappeared from her family’s home in Evanston, Illinois. Twelve years later, her microchip was scanned in Gary, Indiana, and the number led back to the same family.

“A lost dog was reunited with a family in Evanston, Illinois 12 years after disappearing. Flor the chihuahua’s microchip was scanned in Gary, Indiana.”

From the author:

Our scanner looked like a TV remote from the nineties and needed new batteries every other week. Most strays got no beep at all. On the days there was one, somebody always cried, and it was usually a volunteer, not the owner. The owner was still on the phone, asking us to read the number twice.

8 Years Later, Mittens’ Microchip Still Had Mom’s Details

“my childhood cat returned- genuinely feels like a miracle”

this is mittens. we got her when i was about 10 years old, she was my best friend. we had to give her away about 8 years ago and it was absolutely heartbreaking. i never thought id see her again.

then a few weeks ago, a day before my mums birthday, my mum got a call from the vets. a couple had brought her in because they were worried for her, they had been feeding her for at least 3 months. she was a stray, and still had my mums details on her microchip.

people were calling her ‘bella,’ as soon as my mum called her mittens she responded and recognised us both instantly.

i still can’t believe i got her back.

27 Days in a Shipping Container Right Next Door

“My cat survived being locked in a shipping container for 4 weeks”

He went missing on the night of a rainstorm nearly a month ago. We’d been searching for him ever since, but hadn’t heard or seen anything.

Today, we were walking past a property next to our house with an old rusty shipping container in it, when we heard meowing. We’d called for him around this property several times before but heard nothing, then suddenly he hears us talking and starts shouting from inside a closed rusty old shipping container.

The door was heavy and latched shut, but we got him out. He was very skinny and skittish, but recognised us after a few moments

We are over the moon to have him back, but so confused as to how he survived for 27 days.

Luna, Home After 48 Days Thanks to the Same Worn Collar

“My cat came home after being missing for 48 days”

We found my missing boy Luna after he was missing for 48 days ❤️ in perfect shape except for a bit of weight loss.

We contacted the woman that posted him and confirmed through pictures that he had on the same worn collar and that was that! Very lucky he still had his collar on to confirm lol

Jasper, Found 8 Years Later and 7 Hours From Home

Jasper’s family had stopped hoping after 8 years. Then the Houston SPCA called: a microchip had led the shelter straight to them. The family lived 7 hours away, on a ranch in Louisiana.

“Jasper went missing 8 years ago. We thought he was gone. Until we got a phone call 1/4/19 from Houston SPCA saying they found our Jasper thanks to his microchip! Only problem, we lived 7 hours away! He’s now reunited with his family on our 50 acre ranch in Louisiana! We are so blessed!”

From the author:
The beep is only half the job. The other half is a phone number that still works. A study of 53 US shelters found chipped stray dogs went home about 52% of the time, versus 22% of strays overall, yet only 58% of the chips checked were registered.

Nugget, a Horse Farm’s Microchip Scanner and a Number That Matched

“I was able to send a cat back to his family after being lost for 3 or 4 weeks”

Saturday night/sunday morning, in the wee hours of the morning it was 16 degrees Fahrenheit. I’m a nightwatch on a horse farm and I was walking along the fence looking at my horses when I spotted eyes reflecting back at me from the top of a fence post.
It was cat.

Took him to one of the barns where the day shift crazy cat lady is. We get him set up in a heated room, food, water and a bed.

We have a microchip scanner for the horses so for fun and giggles she ran it on him the next day. It came up with a number and the “feline” code.

I found a match. His name is Nugget.

I fill out the found form and 45 minutes later I get a phone call from the owner.

Nugget was strictly an indoor cat that escaped. He was from the next town over, about 5 or so miles away. He had been missing for around 3 weeks... his children have been asking every day since he’s been gone if they’ve found Nugget yet.

And remember to update your tags and chips regularly. They may very well save a life 💜💜

Captain Ran Across the Hay Field Into Her Owner’s Arms After a Month

“After a full month missing Captain finally came home!!”

Our sweet girl Cap went missing over a month ago. My husband and I have been grieving her loss for weeks now. After 2 weeks we came to terms with the fact that something must have happened to her. And then yesterday evening my husband got home from work and he heard her crying from a long way off and there she was, running full speed across the hay field, right into his arms! He called me almost in tears he was so excited.

A Wisconsin Man’s Dog, Found in Philadelphia After 4 Years

A Wisconsin man’s dog had been missing for four years when a microchip match came through from a shelter in Philadelphia. According to the station, the two were reunited there after a cross-country drive.

“A man and his long-lost dog were reunited at ACCT Philly after four years apart, following a cross-country drive and a lucky microchip match.”

Two Months Gone and Found Under a Work Van a Few Houses Down

“She was missing for 2 months and I finally found her today. I thought she was gone forever. I have been going through so much and this was my light at the end of the tunnel.”

Just a few houses down from mine. I can’t believe she survived, poor thing is so sweet that she’s never even hissed before.

She was under their work van. They said they had never seen her before.

When I realized it was her I cried tears of joy. I was literally laughing and crying at the same time.

Back After 2 Years, Waiting by the Window to Be Let In

“My cat came back home after 2 years.”

My cat was missing for 2 years. I thought he was dead. And he just came back home today. I woke up and he was sitting by the window waiting to be let in inside like nothing ever happend.

He looked fine and chubby. I hope he stays home this time.

And my cat has a chip and I don’t let him out voluntarily.

The last cat on this list came back after two years and waited by the window as if he had stepped out for an hour. At the shelter, we kept a water bowl by the front door for exactly that kind of visitor. It was usually empty by evening, and somebody always filled it again.

Has a pet of yours ever gone missing, and how did you find them? Tell us in the comments.
