10 Stories of Children Showing Compassion and Kindness Adults Have Forgotten

At the shelter where I volunteered in high school, two cats who came in together got one card on the kennel door, with both names in the same line. Nobody split a line like that without a meeting. These 12 bonded pairs of cats and dogs were adopted together from an animal shelter or rescue, and their owners say the pair still does everything as a team.
“The shelter made a rule that these siblings had to be adopted together because they were inseparable. They sleep like this every night.”

Same litter, we think they may have different father’s. There were 2 other kitties from the same litter at the shelter, one was an orange tabby and one was a Calico.
“These two pit bulls met on the streets and never left each other’s side at the shelter — they even shared a bed! They kept waiting for a family who wanted to adopt them both. Here’s the day their wish finally comes true.”
“I adopted this bonded pair of 6-year-old littermates yesterday. Jack and Jill are new to Reddit!”
They’re very seriously bonded, so separating them was a total nonstarter. I wanted a bonded pair anyway!
I didn’t name them! Their names have always been Jack and Jill. They were then adopted out once but returned because of their over-interest in the resident cat. I figured they’re six, they’ve had an crazy unstable year — no need to force them to respond to new names on top of all that just for my benefit.
Their only issue is that they are AWFUL on leashes. I have a security-fenced yard and an appointment for them to begin working with a trainer this week. They each weigh over 100 pounds, so we need to get this sorted ASAP!
I think having each other has really helped them feel comfortable during the transition to living here. Granted it’s only Day 3, but still!

At the shelter, two cats who came in together shared one bowl long after we gave them a second one. The second bowl stayed full for a week. Then we stopped filling it, and nobody seemed to mind, least of all them.
“Adopters keep asking to split up bonded pair”
We’ve been fostering a sweet pair of shy adult kitties called Robot (gray) and Wonder Bread (Siamese) for a few months now. They’re somewhat of an odd pair as they met in foster care and becoming besties has helped them open up and show off their great personalities! They both went from cowering in the corner alone to much more confident together. They spend all day grooming one another, snoozing together, and wrestling. While they are listed as needing to go with each other to a forever home, we’ve had multiple folks asking to adopt just Wonder Bread because they like the Siamese look. I’m hanging tight and saying no to separating them because I just can’t bear to do it and they will have a space in foster care with us as long as they need.
“Update: Adopters keep asking to split up bonded pair”
While we didn’t find a family for them immediately, an amazing adopter who saw their post kept her eye on these two until she was ready to adopt and she just took them home this Wednesday!
Robot and Wonder Bread are still getting settled into their new home, but I am confident they now have many years of happy life together ahead of them. I am so glad these boys got their fairytale ending :)
“first time cat owner, adopted bonded sisters- so glad I did !”
I’ve wanted a cat for years but intentionally waited till I was in a larger apartment with lots of windows and storage. once I moved into such a place last year, I started looking for cats at local rescues. I fell in love with this one cat, but quickly found out she was bonded with her sister. I was convinced to adopt both of them, though I will admit I was hesitant at first since I’ve never owned one cat much less two.
best decision ever.
I love my girls more than anything in the world, they are the sweetest angels ever with such big personalities. they keep me (and themselves) endlessly entertained and watching them get more comfortable, affectionate, and social after being so skiddish and skeptical from months on the street and then in multiple shelters/fosters has been so incredibly rewarding.
btw their names are spatula utensil (aka Tula) and slotted spoon (aka Lottie).
“Today, I adopted two 8 week old kittens who are brothers. I originally applied for one but when I got the call about being accepted to adopt, I was asked if I wanted to adopt the brothers together because the people adopting his brother backed out. Meet Kingston and Derby!”
I have noticed that Kingston has separation issues if he can’t see Derby, so it is a good thing I took both.
The shelter gave them the names and after being with them for 6 hours, they fit quite well with their personalities and I have decided to keep them.
“Kingston and Derby have fully explored the new home, met the pups, and chewed their favorite toy in the first week of them being home!”
“A year ago today, we adopted two kitties. This was our first time owning more than one cat at a time! We’ve learned so much and decided to celebrate our adoption day anniversary with this video. Cosette and Eponine have really transformed from shy rescue cats into brave, loving lap cats.”
From the author:
My grandmother says the foreman tolerated exactly one other animal on her porch: a crow that took the far end of the swing every morning. They never touched and never shared food, and neither one ever left first. She called it the best-run partnership on the street.
“Today was a great day at our shelter. Batman and Robin were adopted together!!!”
I can already imagine them running around everywhere. I hope their new humans don’t have anything breakable.
They are already doing really well.
“Bonded Foster Fail”
Years ago I was fostering three little kittens that were on the verge or feral. Terrified of humans. One turned around quickly and found her forever family. The other two were in desperate need of being together, so I listed their adoption as “pair only”. No one put in an application. Clearly, they were already home.
Meet Hattie & Gertie. 👯
It was a “failing upwards”
“Welcome Home Luchee & Eli”
I saw a bonded pair posted by the rescue we had gotten Brody from and decided to get some info. Fast forward 2 weeks and these boys were just delivered to us from Alabama! Luchee is the chunky guy who looks more lab/hound and Eli is his son who is definitely more pittie. They’ve been here 2 days and I can’t believe how good they are! They spent 2 years in foster and it’s mind boggling why.
It’s been a week and I can tell they are starting to settle in and get more comfortable. They are both so sweet and photogenic
“I went to the shelter to adopt a dog, and I found those two in this posture, I couldn’t separate them so I ended up adopting both of them.”
“We adopted Lox and Lottie as a bonded pair almost 3 years ago, and their favorite place is still right next to each other. Calico and tuxedo, littermates for life.”
Lox and Lottie were supposed to outgrow each other, the way littermates usually do. Almost three years later, their favorite spot is still the one right next to each other.
Have you ever adopted two pets at once, and which one turned out to be the boss? Tell us in the comments.
