• Everyone has that one thing from childhood they wish they still had. Mine was a specific book — pictures I still remember, a cover I can still see, gone in a house move when I was nine. Not a vintage masterpiece, not a family treasure. Just a children’s book that mattered to one kid and then disappeared.
  I’ve looked for it casually for twenty years. Thrift stores, flea markets, online listings. Never found it.
  Last weekend. Flea market. Table of old children’s books — the kind of old junk most people walk past without stopping. I wasn’t even going to stop. I’ve looked in a hundred boxes.
  I stopped anyway. Second book in the pile. I stood at that table for a long time not touching it. Then I picked it up and it smelled exactly like being seven years old.

• Grandpa brought me a doll from overseas as a gift. She was gorgeous, creepy-beautiful, vintage, and expensive. I was so happy that I took her everywhere with me. And, as you can probably guess, I eventually lost her. We searched everywhere, but never found her.
  Years later, I got into antiques and stopped by a little antique shop just to see what they had. And you won’t believe it — there, on a high shelf in the back, covered in dust, was my doll.
  I knew it was her immediately. She had a tiny spot of paint missing from her left eyebrow. And her dress had been carefully repaired in a spot that you’d never notice unless you knew exactly where to look.
  I bought her without even thinking twice. After all those years, she finally came home. To me.

• This was actually a few years back. I love thrifting, and I saw this one and thought I would try it on just for fun. To my surprise it fit perfectly and I thought, well I have to buy it now. I wasn’t getting married... but I just wanted it, haha.

• Went to look for some brown dress shoes to match a blue suit I was going to wear to a wedding. Found some nice-looking brown wingtips, seemed to be high quality, so I just snatched them up. Eight bucks.
  I didn’t REALLY look until I got home. They were Allen Edmonds McAllister Wingtop Oxfords — about $450 new. Good amount of wear on the sole, but hardly a scratch to the leather. I’ve had them for ten years.

• I’m 76M and a widower. It was years ago, in the 1990s. My wife found a large crystal platter, the type a turkey might be put on upon the table. She paid something like $3 for it. Nice looking piece.
  She had no intention of using it. One of those items she cleaned up nicely and put on display in a lighted curio cabinet.
  A few days later, a family friend came over for a visit, my wife showed the platter to her. And the lady suddenly got all interested. The woman, Bonnie, was an antiques dealer. Made a special trip home and back to bring her book to verify the item.
  Yeah, turns out the thing was a collector’s item and valued to be worth at least $1800, and possibly more. My wife has passed but now my daughter has it in her curio cabinet. Doesn’t want to sell it. Says it’s too nice looking and besides it belonged to her mother.

• I bought this dress from an online thrift store for $80. The tag was cut off, but based on the fabric and everything else, it feels too high quality to be a counterfeit. • I was broke and in college, looking for cheap professional clothing at Goodwill for job interviews. I found 4 women’s J Crew blazers in my size in navy, gray, black and khaki for like $5 each. They that looked like they had been dropped off by a dry cleaner based on the tags attached and were in pristine condition. 10 years later and I still wear them.

• I restore old furniture. Flea markets are basically my office — good bones at the right price, that’s all I’m looking for.
  Last month I bought a small writing desk. Terrible condition, classic old junk nobody else wanted. Exactly what I look for.
  Started stripping it at home. Found something taped to the underside of the drawer. An envelope. Inside: $200 cash and a note that said, “For whoever fixes this. It deserves someone who cares.”
  I sat with that for a while. The previous owner had known this piece would end up at a flea market. Had known it would need work. Had paid for the restoration in advance and left it for a stranger — the specific stranger who’d see past the thrift store condition to what was underneath.
